Pumping up Carlton, putting as much attention on them as possible, and ideally, more pressure.

It's what Hird did with that article.

I could be wrong, but in my mind I'm pretty certain he's doing us a small favour.

While it could well be a Machiavellian plot, I think it is more likely he has just gone for a relative roughie so that at the end on the season if it comes off he can get up on his soap box and as the only person in the media (aside from possibly your favourites,Tim Lane and Robert Walls)who tipped it and then claim to know something about football.

...don't a lot of people do that?

And if you miss a prelim by a bee's dick (ergo, almost winning at Subiaco while not at full strength) with upside in the tank, I'm not sure that you're a roughie. Or shouldn't be, anyway.

While not a rank outsider not many people at the start of the year tipped Carlton over the Hawthorn, Collingwood and Geelong.

Especially given how far back we were after losing those 5 all important practice matches.

Hearing that both Hurley and Fletch will be rested this weekend...

Originally it was only Hurley but now both could miss...

I still don't believe it as it could be a record score if those two miss...

He's only going off Lloyd's suggestion earlier in the week.

Actually got told about 1 of them to miss before we played the Pies and I scoffed then!

Now I tend to agree with the suggestion that you have to throw everything at the game you can win...

Lloyd is right. Fletch couldn't possibly play 2 games in 5 days, surely!

Yeah your Essendon mail is always spot on *smirks*

I wouldn't smirk too hard.

Look it makes perfect sense and if Essendon were now guaranteed one win in the next week, wouldn't you take it?

4 wins and 1 loss is a pretty good start that many other teams would kill for, one would think.

We're going to be 5-0 Harker.
Mark my words.
I am clearly joking btw, 3-2 obv.

To which individual am I listening to bi-polar bare?

If Essendon do manage to clock up a 5-0 start then the football world will be in full respect of the Hird Dynasty (HD)

p.s. I did see through your invisible ink :)

To be honest i can't see us being able to match the Blues at the moment. They are red hot and are playing a lot better footy than us, and their speed and run looks to be at a level we won't be able to get ontop of at this stage

I know a lot of people will be sceptical of this it but i wouldnt be totally against resting 4-5 key players for ANZAC Day and having a bunch of blokes to come in and make the numbers. The season as a whole is a lot more important than a round 4 game and if resting some players is beneficial for later on in the year then i'd be fine with that

A 4 day break will be very harsh on the body and especially after such a tough pre-season the likelyhood of blokes doing injuries is just too great to risk

How far have we fallen and how miserable a club have we become if we are honestly going to throw a Round 4 game against Carlton, going in 3-0.

If the team changes reflect any of this bullshit I'll be almost totally repulsed. Even if we turned around and won Anzac Day as a result, I would find that situation to be completely unconscionable and indefensible.

I'd honestly rather lose both and know that we did our absolute utmost to beat Carlton.

What Lord said.

If we're just going to give in the ghost and throw in the towel then there's no point showing up.

Carlton are our mortal enemies, we have to show up to play them and we have to give them a damn good fight. I don't expect us to come out on top but if the boys put in 100% we'll see a much improved Bombers outfit.

we have been playing poorly but we are 3-0 and we always play like crap against teams we should beat an then when we play a team that should beat us we turn up and play awesome i think blues will still win as much as i hate it but if both teams play at their best i feel like we are the better team even tho that sounds stupid collingwood have been playing poorly carlton smashed collingwood now everyone should fear carlton im not buying into it

Aren't these guys professional athletes who train and get paid handsomely, surely they can withstand 2 games in 4 days geez.

I'm sure they're not going to complain about the 10 days between Anzac Day and their next game, thats the bonus.

The way i see it is go hell for leather in those 2 games then you have 10 days before your next assignment to recover

To those that think the idea of us throwing the game is the worst thing ever what would you rather?

Rest a few players, players tht are on the field go 100% we lose to Carlton then after being questioned front up Anzac day and smash the pies then enjoy our ten day break with minimal injuries.

Or

Don't rest anyone play our "best" side both games. Players go 100% cop 4-5 injuries testing our depth even more, start dropping games to Brisbane, tigers effectively ruining a push up the ladder higher than 8th.

I hate the idea of going 'easy' against one side to do better against another but hird and co strike me as the people that think long term. Drop a game early on in the year no one is going to remember if we play into september or go flat out every game. We aren't good enough to turn it on all year. We need to pace ourselves.

It comes down to whether you want to see the club as being successful. Or do you want to see the club being successful against Carlton?
