ROUND 5: COUNTRY FESTIVAL

ESSENDON VS GEELONG

REID OVAL, WARRNAMBOOL

Sunday October 8 @ 1.05pm AEDT

Essendon’s match-up against Geelong on Sunday will be an interesting one, with the afternoon game in Warrnambool shaping as an important moment for both teams to amplify their finals ambitions.

ESSENDON was defeated by 20 points at Punt Road Oval last week by the Collingwood Football Club.

As the glaring sun set in across the city ahead of the AFL Grand Final, the Pies brought their own heat to keep their season alive with a 6.8 (44) to 3.6 (24) victory.

Despite trailing across all metrics bar tackles early, Collingwood capitalised on its opportunities to keep itself in the game. Conceding the first five inside-50s, the Pies found a reply, winning two of the next three and scoring a goal from both entries.

Bonnie Toogood again showed her prowess, worrying Collingwood’s defence, with two goals in the first half on the back of strong leads and body work.

Essendon had an opportunity to score with the breeze in the second quarter, but the experienced Magpies outfit responded quickly, tightening up their defence and denied Essendon the chance to score.

The Dons continued to find plenty of the ball but Collingwood were more impactful with their possessions, and led the second quarter inside 50 count to take a 13 point lead into the half-time break.

Maddy Prespakis was immense, especially in the third term, with 10 disposals (5 contested) and 3 tackles in that quarter, while Georgia Nanscawen continued to put her body on the line in Round 5, amassing 16 disposals and laying seven tackles for the day.

Bonnie Toogood displayed more of her brilliance and Essendon battled hard, but the Bombers struggled to create scoring opportunities after the Pies sent Bri Davey to half forward and lifted their intensity to frustrate Essendon's ball movement.

A day full of 'learnings' was made worse in the final term when Sophie Alexander, who had been among the bests last week, was stretchered off in a neck brace and sent to hospital following an incident in the final term.

Dons coach Nat Wood reflected on the midfield battle after the game:

"We over-handballed it today, that’s for sure. That’s what good teams with pressure do, they force you into doing things you don’t really want to do, so credit to Collingwood with that.

"We’re trying to find that balance of getting those kick marks but also making sure we’ve got enough speed on the game - we’ll keep evolving that."

Started watching a few minutes into the 3rd. Prespakis and Nanscawen were huge that quarter.

Can we give Toogood a game in the mens side so she can be that outlet mark on the wing?
I'd love to see a pre-season comp that's mixed teams. Could be a variation on AFLX, touch footy, international rules, or something like that. Or like the EJ Whitten/State of Origin type game with only retired players playing and rep teams for Vic vs Allies (but not wanky s**t like TV presenters that have never been paid to play sport in their lives).
