Stevo for Club Champion in 2002

I can't stress enough how important a win is this week. We have to beat Carlton at Optus. If we don't then we will undo all of the good work we did early in the season. This is a crucial game for us to get back into some winning form.

With Ryan out, I would bring in Dan Schell to play FF. I think he will benefit from being one out in the goal square. I would leave Stevo at CHF because we know he can do it, we need to persist with him there, he is our best option. I would stick Marshy in a forward pocket, Welshy in the otherI would have Brett Burton up forward to snare a couple aswell.

I would bring in Rhett Biglands because I think we missed his agression at the body during ruck contests last week. Roo would be back slap bang in the middle where he does his best work.

I would probably drop Nelson, he has done nothing wrong but if we are going to play three ruckmen then it leaves little option. A full run at Sturt wouldn't do him any harm. I don't think we need to panic and make wholesale changes just yet. We need to settle down in our positions and get some form going again.

I'd make these adjustments:

IN: Biglands, Schell, Beinke.

OUT: Fitzgerald, Marsh, Nelson.

Being that we're on Sunday we can name a large interchange. I have been monitoring Ben Nelson's progress very closely this year. Ayres refused to give him a decent run in the Wizard Cup, the very time you'd think he might actually see some game time in the first half. If he's lucky he'll get 2-3 mins of time on the field at the end 2nd quarter then used in sporadic 7-8 minute periods throughout the second half. He's been jerked around for weeks and weeks now and it's about time he got to play 4 FULL quarters. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him played this way for another 6-8 weeks if Ayres' previous record is anything to go by.

I like your thinking

I am not sure why people think Marsh can play

I would have Gallagher in the side instead of Beinke though who is not yet match fit.

I think we could try Nathan Bassettt in a forward role. Give him four quarters and see how he goes.

I agree and disagree. Gallagher is an exciting young player and I have been looking forward to his return for a while, but he's not a marker and goal kicker, what we really need. If anything we have such an abundance of his type that he might find himself sitting on the bench most of the day.

I think our lack of in form marking forwards means that we need to over quota is this area. The trouble is, if as you say Beinke lacks match fitness, then who else could we bring in?? Perhaps Beinke could find match fitness on the run?

Well the other option is to upgrade Rutten from the rookie list and put him straight into the team

It has been done before.

Yes, with Gallagher, if memory serves me correctly.

Don't know much about Rutten. Certainly our list looks a bit threadbare in the tall forward department. Perhaps we should have sweet talked Sav a bit more a couple of years back!

IMO, after last week's insipid performance, (unforced) changes must be made. Biglands has been our best ruckman & should replace Marsh. Schell should have played last week instead of Fitzy, so he should come in this week. Stevens has an injured back & hence has been playing badly & should be rested. Bring in Hewitt to play on FatRed (did a good job last time) & Perrie to play CHF. Beinke should come in as the marking option we have lacked (even he did play badly kicking 4 goals for Port) - this will allow Roo to spend most of the time on the ball. Burton should go back to the Eagles as he needs a kick up the arse. The in-form Gallagher should come in for the unnder-used Nelson who can get some match practice with the SANFL Blues. Goodwin back to the HB line to discover how to kick the football again & Massie up forward to help out Welshy with some competitiveness.

In: Biglands, Schell, Hewitt, Beinke, Gallagher
Out: Marsh, Fitzgerald, Stevens, Burton, Nelson

B: Hart Bassett Stenglein
HB: Smart Hewitt Goodwin
C: Doughty Ricciuto Johnson
HF: Welsh Perrie Massie
F: Schell Beinke Bode
R: Clarke Bickley McLeod

Int: Biglands Edwards Gallager Johncock

Emerg: Nelson Rutten Burton

Ayres appeared on shaky ground last week with his moves of folly....so I might as well have my twobobs worth

Leave Marsh up Forward, drop Nelson against his old side (They never play any good against them anyway) allow David Gallagher to kick to us like he tried to do last year; and bring in Perrie at CHF. Biglands will clean up it the Rucks.

****Burton BOG **** ....YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST:eek:

Crows by 6 goals if its dry 6 points if its wet

Teams

v ADELAIDE
Sunday, 2:10pm AEST, Optus Oval

Carlton
B: Gallagher, Manton, Christou
HB: Fletcher, Beaumont, McKay
C: Eccles, Murphy, Freeborn
HF: Houlihan, Whitnall, Lappin
F: Mansfield, McKernan, Livingston
Foll: Hotton, Bradley, Camporeale
Inter (from): Campbell, Cranage, Davies, Fevola, Franchina, Pickering, Plunkett
In: Campbell, Fevola, Plunkett
Out: -
New: Campbell (Murray Bushrangers U18)

Adelaide
B: Hart, Bassett, Edwards
HB: Smart, Stevens, Johncock
C: Stenglein, Ricciuto, Doughty
HF: Goodwin, Perrie, Bickley
F: Welsh, Schell, Johnson
Foll: Clarke, McLeod, Bode
Inter (from): Massie, Nelson, Shirley, Gallagher, Burton, Marsh, Biglands
In: Biglands, Gallagher, Schell, Shirley
Out: Fitzgerald (knee)

Who will be the players to drop out? - probably Shirley, Marsh & unlucky Nelson, who needs a good run with Sturt. If Burton plays, he should start on the bench given his recent form. Sounds like Roo will be part of a midfield rotation through FF. I would like to see Massie start given his good form. Reckon he would be good across HF. This is a must win game, otherwise we are back in the pack with a tough game against Brisbane next week.

changes

Stevo for Club Champion

Schell and Biglands in to the side.

Marsh and Nelson out.

Take Gallagher as an emergency.

It will be intersting to see how young D Gallagher goes with Carlton this week. He has been playing very well for them....and yes I even saw him kick it to a Carlton player.....he's improved out of sight :p . Will he be trying too hard though? Will he try and prove a point to the Crows?

k - Fitzy will be a definite omission from last week's side.

With D Gallagher on the weekend we should find out with his kicking whether it's the Crows players he doesn't like kicking the ball to or his teamates generally. IMO, he will get completely confused & have about a 50/50 distribution to Crows & Blues players. ;) :D

It's funny, but I thought Burton was alright when he came onto the ground last week after starting on the bench. Thought his performance was an improvement anyway. Still think he should be part of the FF rotation, give him a go at the goalfront! :p

Thankfully Hulme is still out, so McLeod could be in for a good game...though Franchina could be a reasonable replacement :)

Hope the boys haven't forgotten the final last year, they embarassed us, let's return the favour...this time, it's personal  :p

your right!

Opps! I had him out of the side although I didn't put him up in my message! Better replace him hey!

Out Marsh, Fitzy :( & Nelson

In Biglands, Schell & Gallagher

take Shirley as emergency!

I want to see D Gallaghers tattoo! He never had it at the Crows. It is huge, he probably got inspiration from the great Roo himself!

PMSL He won't know who to kick the ball too, if he wasn't confused before he will be on Sunday afternoon!

Ant - IMO Burton's best work is not when he is stationed @ FF, but floats down to the square (to take a huge grab by leaping over the pack) from HF or the wing. But I agree about the payback for the pain & suffering we felt after last year's final. If that can't motivate the boys, nothing will!

That may be so...but he's done nothing in that sort of role so far...I think he's a potential matchwinner and if he's not working as a floating midfielder/forward, I don't see any reason why he can't be given some room and stationed at FF...they may not be expecting it and he may just provide something different up there...(I think I've watched the 3rd quarter from the 2001 Richmond game too often) Let's just hope he gets back to his best soon, wherever on the ground that may be.

Burton is one of our genuine matchwinner & excitement machines. IMO, he has just trying to do to much with possession of the ball. He should try & get back to what he is best at - running everywhere like a mad man & drifting into packs to take spectacular marks. I agree the sooner he can get back to some decent form the better. I wan't to see both Welshy & Burton going beserk on our forward line!

Looks like the changes are:

IN: Biglands, Schell.

OUT: Fitzgerald, Marsh.

Hope they've got comfy benches at Optus, for Benny Nelson's sake.

Matchups

Backlines: Smart v Whitnall, Bassett v McKernan, Stenglein v Lappin, Edwards v Houlihan. Smart has taken the opposition's best forward all year. Stenglein isn't needed to tag any of the Carlton midfielders, so he should get Lappin like at FP last year. Also, why doesn't Johnson who is probably our best kick take the kickins after a point?

Midfield: No tagging required by the Crows, just back our players in. I expect Plunkett to tag McLeod with Franchina dropped.

Forwards: Stevens v Christou, Perrie v Beaumont, Manton v Schell, McKay v Welsh. IMO, playing 3 talls could stretch Carlton's defence. We need to get back to having good forward pressure & an even distribution of goal kickers, including from the midfield.

Crows by 20pts. :)
