Yeah, because he was playing vfl. That's the point. He was an A grade 30 year old ruckman on a normal contract that, despite the best efforts of both players, could not make it work on field and had to be sent to the 2s.
It's disingenuous to say it was a cash dump when Melbourne could fully afford the contract, that's not what a cap dump is.
It's also by far the closest situation to this one.
I agree with all of that bar the first sentence. The driver for getting rid of Macrae was that he wasn't best 22. You could have kept the money on the books if it benefited you
It reads as though you're missing a bit of subtlety here, and it's related to why the Saints are able to pay overs for the next 2 years.
Whilst trading a player may not necessarily be a "Cap dump" in the traditional sense of the word, ie Macrae and Grundy, yes the Dogs and Dees could afford their salaries under the salary cap.
But, It's still advantageous to dump those salaries. Ie
a) Dees + Grundy = 100% of cap
b) Dees - Grundy =95% of cap
It can still be advantageous to salary dump Grundy to allow TPP for this year to be 95%, opening up the ability to pay 105% next year.
Technically not a "cap dump' in the traditional sense, but a strategic salary dump nonetheless. It's possibly how the Dogs had funds to target Wilkie at $1.2m.
Saints took it one step further with paying forward, which is not unheard of, but has allowed a circa 20-25% of salary cap spending spree to take place in one off season.
