Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

Impossible actually so what do you think the point is?

That somehow Carlton would have just said yes to the offer that you put forward?

It doesn’t sound like you’re doing a Hawthorn and trying to get the contracted players to burn bridges with their club.

Genuinely not sure what the strategy is here. Carlton will need massive overs for Curnow to stop fans microwaving memberships. Saints need a good offer for Marshall to make it worthwhile trading a great player so they can end up in a positive net position out of it and strengthen other areas.
Simple really. Appears our strategy is to determine what we see as a fair offer, and if rejected move on.

We didn't seek out either player and we're notorious for not overspending on salary or trade capital. When you do that is when you end up with list issues later.

If it means we walk away from Marshall so be it. He's a nice to have. Not a must have.

If your list management team are kind of obligated to turn up to trade period anyway, it would be pretty boring to just sit around and not do anything I suppose.

Weird place the AFL is in just now where contracted players think they will get to a destination that isn’t willing/able to offer a good deal to their current club.

So, your telling me that Geelong didnt speak to Marshall before he nominated them? He went out of his way to choose Geelong and only Geelong? (he didnt meet any other clubs)

if Curnow goes to Sydney then we’ll have Geelong over a barrel for Big Ro. 2 1sts of f*** off pussy cats

This stuff about not seeking out players is absolutely fanciful so Marshall just magically puts in a trade request without Geelong putting in any work into him whatsoever

Toby Conway's been the next in line for 2-3 years and never really had a clear, injury free run at making the #1 spot his. If we pick up Marshall, he probably never will.

I think this is where people may find Geelong's lack of desperation to get this done perplexing; I'd almost have it the other way and say I'd be worried if we were pulling out all the stops for Marshall, as the inference I'd take from that (especially with Stanley playing on) is that Conway's body could be cactus.
If Geelong goes into next season relying solely on Conway as there number one ruck after the improvements Brisbane have made that would be some of the worst list management I’ve seen in some time , I think a deal gets done in the end Geelong can’t afford not to, Mackie will goes as late as possible hoping we buckle and in the have to swallow some pride and offer a future first and some decent steak knives

OK mate. Can't win a flag every year.

I'd argue that having Conway, Rhys Stanley and Mitch Edwards kicking the dew off and potentially little to zero contributors from the 2024 and 2025 drafts would be dubious list management, but each to their own.

That is clearly just posturing
The club is open to trading him, but not for the pissant bag of beans that the Cats are offering. Marshall is worth more to the Saints next year than a potential 20s pick in one of the most underwhelming drafts since COVID.

Geelong either loses this trade comprehensively, or Marshall remains a Saint. Yes, that means we will have less bargaining power next offseason. Cats fans are used to getting kissed on the pecker when it comes to trades.

St Kilda have front-end his contract significantly, so he will be earning well below what a player of his level would be getting elsewhere. That's without reminding everyone that he is contracted for a further two seasons.

You prefer openly sabotaging yourselves purely to spite Geelong?

I mean....'A' for honesty, but I hope your list management team is a bit more level-headed than that.

I genuinely believe the club wants to see how the ruck partnership goes between him and TDK. It could work out brilliantly and result in improved performance (potentially finals) next season, which could attract further free agents etc.

Rowan's yearly salary is low for the remainder of his contract and we have no reason to get rid of him. Max King hasn't played for the best part of two years and we were severely undersized this year.

What are you expecting those draftees to show? Polkinghorne and Molier are showing promising signs that they'll be long term players for us. Polk in particular kicking 31.17 in the VFL as a solid prospect.

Hofmann has been injured, but the club were very happy with what he was showing in the pre-season, and the rest were rookie picks that probably won't make it.

Two potential long term players is a pretty good result out of any draft, particularly one with the picks we had.

2023 was a freak event with the impact those guys have had so quickly. I wouldn't be panicking yet, revisit in a years time.

I'm not panicking.

I strongly believe that a blueprint for any club to be successful is that it needs to bring in an average of 2-3 players every draft who (ultimately) establish themselves as long-term senior players, notwithstanding any occasional stars that club manages to secure in the trade/free agency period.

The trade for Bailey Smith greatly reduced our chances of doing that in 2024, though of course, with what he produced, you cop that every day of the week. A proposed trade for Rowan Marshall would significantly reduce our chances of a successful draft again in 2025. And of course, a couple of our success stories from the 2023 draft were a few years above the typical draft age.

So, that leaves us with very few players born since 1/1/2004 who you'd bank on to play 100 AFL games. Maybe some of our recent draftees will emerge as long-term AFL players. Maybe they won't. There's a better chance they will with a first round pick.

You Geelong supporters must have someone with inside info. What's the word? It has been very quiet regarding Ro.

Barratt and Morris both adamant during the day that a deal will get done at deadline.

Don't think either club has done any media interviews today?

Purple and Morris are the biggest campaigners around. They talk absolute 💩

Barratt has always had good connections with Geelong, been spot on re: trades etc over a number of years.

In any case, no need for either club to leak any info probably suggests things are happening. Wouldn't be surprised if a deal is essentially agreed on and keeping it for deadline drama.

Don't worry mate, more just a running joke we've got on the Cats board with a few of our supposed 'ITK' types.

Long story short, we've got no idea what's happening here.
Here i was about to bite and say that a little bird told me Rowan was going to north to play full back.

The bird was a literal finch and talks to me daily

Spite Geelong? We have no reason to trade him. A fact a lot of cats fans and afl media seem to be struggling to get their heads around.

If the club trades him for anything less than way overs, I'd be really disappointed. He's one of our best players... why would we trade him because it suits Geelong?

Excited to see him and TDK running around together next year.
