Both are generally reguarded as the greatest CHF's of there time, but I only had the pleasure of watching Carey play during my time and he was far and away the best player I've seen. But alot of older people still maintain that Royce was just as good, if not better. Soooo, who do you think is better and why?

When people say who is the top 5 of all time, they mostly include carey somewhere...however, I am yet to see someone who rates Royce Hart top 5.

I'd have to say Carey.

Apart from the blokes who picked him at CHF in the team of the century.

'Kick it to Royce!'

I didnt see Carey playing in that time though ;)

The memory grows dim on Royce but what I do remember is the great man floating across packs for one grab marks.

I think Wayne was better for longer due to Royce's injuries but I voted can't split em .

Of course some people would rate Barrie Robran the equal of both .

The team that was picked in 1996, the year Carey won his first premiership?

Clearly the next 4 years of Carey's prime as a footballer would have made a massive difference in the voting.

that, and the fact that Hart's selection, was, er, controversial.

Yeah, people were saying that Carey deserved to be in it 1996 when he still had the following seasons ahead of him:

1998: 19.6 possessions per game, 7.7 marks per game (193 on the season), 80 goals.

1999: 17.7 possessions per game, 7.3 marks per game (145 on the season), 76 goals, Premiership Captain.

2000: 18.3 possessions per game, 7.7 marks per game (176 on the season), 69 goals.

Surely those seasons would have put him over the top...

Then again, only a Richmond fan is arguing otherwise.

I'm not even a huge Wayne Carey supporter compared to most people, but he's clearly ahead of Royce Hart.

I didn't see Hart play, but my old man swears by that he and Ian Stewart are the best players he's seen
Ditto Lenny*. Having spoken to those who saw Rotce play, say he is one of the best palyers ever. Having said that, we all know how good Carey was. My vote would be can't split them as should most people's, unless they actually saw Hart play.

Please....tell me what you know about Royce Hart.

Royce Hart played for Richmond, he was appointed captain in 1972, He was a centre half foward, his career lasted about 10 years, he won Richmonds b&f a few times and was also the clubs leading goal kicker a few times also, retiring in 1977, he began coaching Footscray in 1980 for I think 2 years. And yeah thats about all I know about him.

wow, what about telling us about the match that he no way should have played in which happened to be a GF, which Richmond were down at half time, so Royce came on and one the premiership standing on one leg but still took marks backing into packs and booting long goals

I despise Richmond and everything it stands for and Royce Hart nearly destroyed my footy club as coach.

But Royce Hart was the best player I ever saw. Braver, more skilled, better leader. Carey was good but Hart was something else.

1. Coaches don't destroy footy clubs, committees do.
2. I saw plenty of both players during their careers, and as good as Hart was - outstanding, actually - Carey was one of the greatest players I've ever seen.
Hart had the finesse, Carey the bulk, and the space to do what he liked.
Pagan built the North side around him, much the same way that John
Kennedy did for Peter Hudson at Hawthorn.
Carey and Ablett were in a class of their own.

Agreed Ablett is a freak and even though i've only seen Carey play live i would have to say the legend of Royce Hart and some footage i have seen of him suggests that he deserves to be mentioned with Carey as one of the games greats, played in the 69 SANFL GF for the Bays the week after the VFL grand final and kicked five goals i'm pretty sure....
