Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

He rejected GC cause he wants to play AFL next year. He's basically been told by at least one other club, namely Collingwood, that he'll be selected if he nominates for the draft, ala Beams last year.

He's an inside midfielder with good pace who uses the ball very well by foot. Not overly tall, but he's rated very highly, and GC are pretty disappointed because he was a required player for them...

He is a Queenslander and GC can take them now.
thanks for both of your posts might have to research him a bit more

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

well when i looked at your list I thought there were quite a few outside mids and inside mids so i gave you best availabe. plus you obviously don't know what you need because you have a few kp players and you don't need panos. many other doggies posters are saying that you don't need ruckmen or kpf because of grant, roughead, cordy, and possibly hall

Well done mate, I agree that the bulldogs are in a position to take best available. Although I wouldn't be taking anymore inside mids.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Awesome draft for Freo Morabito, Black and Craig with our first 3 pick :) I would be very happy with Craig in the 3rd round it would set our ruckman up for years to come eventually Clarke/Craig to take over for Sandilands.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

for richmond thats 3 mids and 1 ruckmen. i would like us to go 2 mids, 1 KPB and a swingman that mainly plays forward but can help out in defence.

i was trying to fill your needs, but it was a bit difficult with the players around the pick. I chose gysberts because I thought he could play a running half back-wingman position, but it was a bit difficult.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

I'd love Carlton to pick up Josh Cowan, not sure about that early but I do rate him. Have seen him play throughout his juniors regularly. good skills and work rate.

Anyway, good effort :thumbsu:

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Not bad...Here's some of my thoughts for better or worse.

Uh, I think Dustin Martin could go at Richmond's pick 3, but pick 5 is a fair call.

Kane Lucas at 3 is a big call. I wouldn't have him in my top 8 players tbh...

West Coast are very keen on Lewis Jetta and will have to part with pick 7 if they want him as he will not last till their 2nd pick.

Jack Fitzpatrick isn't a 1st round prospect i'm led to believe. His field kicking and decision making need massive improvement, so he's a bit more of a project player at this stage.

Cunnington is a top 6 prospect and I doubt he'd slide past Port's 1st pick as he's exactly the type of player they should be looking for..

Mitch Duncan isn't a 1st round prospect imo.

Aaron Black will probably go higher than pick 20, may even be around the cusp of the top 10.

Bastinac is another who will probably go higher than what you have him as. His kicking skills are rated by recruiters, and as we know, kicking skills are 'king' these days. I'd say 10-16 for Bastinac, but may even slip into the top 10.

Ben Griffiths is a very talented KPP with better footskills than Butcher. He would probably go top 10 if he didn't have the injury problems. Still reckon he'll be around the 10-16 mark with the lack of KP depth.

Brad Sheppard is a solid top 20 pick, with the potential to go 1st round...

Melksham should be rated a bit higher, perhaps around 20-25.

Callum Bartlett could be a bit of a smoky. Missed all of this season through injury but was rated a top 10 prospect at the start of the year. I'm thinking recruiters haven't forgotten about his pace and footskills. Top 25 for him i'd think...

Josh Thomas could be a 1st rounder too. The QLD'er has drawn comparisons to Dayne Beams, and Collingwood might have to part with pick 14 if they want him..

Pretty good effort :thumbsu:

You should do a phantom draft.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

#20 AARON BLACK – Fremantle
Athletic key forward whose excellent hands are a feature. Agility and awareness are also strengths. Western Australia U18 representative in 2009

Aaron Black is a) not U18, and b) didn't represent WA. You've got the wrong Aaron Black.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

A mentioned before, I don't think we'll be going after another half-forward flanker type. Best available in mind, I still don't think we'd go for Moore. Any of Griffiths, Panos, Carlisle, Black, and possibly even Jetta would fit our mould better, and are (possibly) more talented options. Although, I'd prefer one of Black or Griffiths, because, to me, they show massive upside.

And to the poster saying we don't need anymore KPF, well, Grant hasn't shown alot since coming to the club, and Cordy, Jones and Roughead are still all young, and aren't guaranteed to make it. With at least one F/S midfielder selection next year, talls for our first pick, and best available with our second seems a good way to go.

We'll have Barry Hall playing for us for a minimum of 2 years and along with that, we have a bunch of young players developing. We don't need any more KPF, as little as they've shown, our quantity of them is still at a good level and they all still carry their promise. Grant will develop under Hall if an injury is sustained this year, Cordy, Roughead and Jones have all showed quite a bit in the reserves and Boumann was quite impressive toward the latter stages of the year. What the Doggies need is a quick line-breaking wingman to replace the aging Eagleton, it would be great if he could play forward too as the replacement for Akermanis. Jetta would be great, so would someone like Sheppard or (as far as second rounders go) Fyfe or Colyer. We need a Key Position Defender too, Morris and Lake aren't going to last forever and there are too many question marks over Williams.

Oh, and what do you mean we only get 1 F/S next year? To our convenience, we get both Wallis and Liberatore with our first 2 picks in the r*ped draft.

Re: RPetterd15's Phantom 2009 National Draft

Thanks GrandBlue for backing me up as to why you guys don't need more kpf's in this draft. I will be doing a 2nd version of the draft soon to correct things after trade week so i will try and cover every teams needs a little more. i have to admit i didn't think about leg speed or kpd for the dogs but i will go over every team a little better

This is an update since trade week. Have tried to accomodate for clubs needs a bit more. Hope all teams are happy.

#1 TOM SCULLY – Melbourne

Gifted onballer who has already drawn favourable comparisons with Blues' star Chris Judd. Scully enhanced his prospects of going No.1 at the next draft by averaging 25 possessions at the championships. His total of 26 clearances over the carnival more than doubled the next best tally on his team.

#2 JACK TRENGOVE – Melbourne

Skippered his side and averaged 23 possessions a game. Booted five goals and brought others into the game with 10 score assists. He was ranked third overall by Champion Data.

#3 DUSTIN MARTIN – Richmond

Dustin Martin is a good quality attacking midfielder who can kick well off both feet. He also has good balance and can keep his feet when in a contest. Martin averaged over 21 touches in the AFL under 18 championships, which is a decent effort for a midfielder. Martin is also an AFL under 18championships All-Australian player. He was named in the team as a centre.

#4 ANTHONY MORABITO – Fremantle

At 190 centimetres and 90 kilograms Morabito is tall and powerful for a midfielder but make no mistake he doesn’t look out of place on the ball at all. Often reading the play in contests beautifully Morabito possesses that ability to power out of a pack at full speed and then hit a forward with a long left foot pass, a trait that makes him stand out at his current level.

#5 BEN CUNNINGTON– North Melbourne

One of Vic Country's best and an Under-18 All-Australian. The versatile prospect has been likened to Brad Sewell, and averaged 20 disposals per match during the U18 champs. His ferocious attack on the ball and hard-running attributes keeps him right in the mix for the first round of November’s NAB AFL Draft.

#6 JOHN BUTCHER – Sydney

The clear standout key forward in the early part of 2009, Butcher is a shade under 200cm (and could keep growing). Outstanding performance for Vic Country in the 2008 U18 Championships. Has great contested marking ability and is excellent at ground level for a big man. With so much upside and ability it is hard to see him drafted outside the top three in 2009.

#7 GARY ROHAN – West Coast

A medium forward that has the versatility to play back or in the midfield, Rohan has allowed a lot of flexibility to his coaches thus far and seems likely to continue in that vein going forward. In his time forward Rohan has proven too quick and agile for players who can match him in the air and too athletic and strong for those who have proven capable of matching him at ground level. His forward pressure, a favorite attribute at AFL level, has been fantastic and this was highlighted in the Under 18 Championships where he earned All Australian honors and averaged four tackles a game.

#8 KANE LUCAS– Port Adelaide

Lucas’ game combines serious football class with terrific running power. He is an outside midfielder but he plays that role close to perfection. His biggest drawback is his very slight frame, but hopefully he can overcome this once in the AFL system. Has excellent kicking skills and always stands out.

#9 MATTHEW PANOS– Port Adelaide

Matthew Panos is an athletic, sily-smooth 193cm, 18 year old key forward from Norwood. He has a great set of hands and a long precision kick, as demonstrated when he led SA in goal-kicking at the NAB AFL U/18 National Championships in 2009. He was selected All Australian Full Forward of the U/18 Championships.

#10 LUKE TAPSCOTT – Essendon

A strong, medium-tall forward, Tapscott is not a high possession winner but he is one of those players who hurts the opposition with his disposals. Plays mainly close to goal and is an excellent finisher. Likes to bustle through in a straight line and has an outstanding goal sense.

#11 AARON BLACK – Melbourne

193cm tall forward. Is 19 years of age and already matured body. Kicked several bags while playing for Peel Thunder this year.

#12 DANIEL TALIA – Carlton

Already key position height at 195cm, Talia is a fierce competitor and has the ability to play forward or back. He is quick for his size and strong overhead.

#13
KOBY STEVENS – Adelaide

A hard working and powerful midfielder Koby Stevens has already carved out a good reputation in the right circles and looks very likely to go in the first round if not the top 10 picks of the draft.

#14 JAKE MELKSHAM – Sydney

Well balanced with tremendous ball-winning ability. Strong and hard at stoppages with clean skills by hand and foot. Can play both inside and outside. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2009. AIS/AFL Academy graduate.

#15 LEWIS JETTA– Western Bulldogs

Extremely quick player who provides great run and carry. Team-oriented with clean hands and great agility. Can play a variety of positions.

#16 NATHAN VARDY – Port Adelaide

Agile ruckman with excellent foot skills for his size. Ultra-competitive and very strong overhead. Tap work at clearances is a distinct strength. Vic Country U18 representative in 2009.

#17 ALLEN CHRISTENSON – Geelong

Prolific ball winner who amasses plenty of contested possessions. Sound decision-maker who is extremely clever around goals. Vic Country U18 representative in 2009.

#18
BRAD SHEPPARD – Melbourne

Rebounding defender with terrific ball winning ability. Strong performer for WA at NAB AFL U18 Championships receiving All-Australian honours. Good user by both hand and foot.

#19 BEN GRIFFITHS – Richmond

Rarely beaten in the air, has quick with clean hands below his knees and is an exceptional long kick for goal. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2009.

#20 JAKE CARLISLE – Fremantle

Can play a variety of roles effectively. Strong hands, nice foot skills and an ability to read the play well are highlights of his game. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2009.

#21 JORDAN GYSBERTS
– North Melbourne

Smart midfielder who wins plenty of his own ball. Rarely fumbles and uses the ball effectively by both hand and foot. Can go forward and kick goals. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2008/09. AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

#22 ANDREW MOORE – West Coast

The younger brother of Richmond defender Kelvin has been likened to Swan Ryan O'Keefe. Still a strong prospect and was particularly impressive early in the U18 champs.

#23 ROLAND AH CHEE – West Coast

#24 JESSE CRICHTON – Essendon

Creative playmaker who has instinctive ability to find space in traffic. Ultra competitive with exceptional vision and awareness. Wins his own footy in the air and at ground level. Tasmania U18 representative in 2008/09. AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

#25 JACK FITZPATRICK – North Melbourne

Versatile for an athlete who stands at 201cm, and his flexibility makes him an attractive proposition. Can fill a key position at either end of the ground and should be a first-round pick at this point.

#26 MITCH DUNCAN – Essendon

Lead-up forward who presents well and has already played senior footy at WAFL level. Averaged 20 possessions a game at the champs and booted eight goals.

#27
TRAVIS COLYER– Brisbane

Attacking midfielder with a good turn of speed and tremendous poise in traffic. Strong performer for Western Australia at NAB AFL U18 Championships, winning All-Australian honours.

#28 RYAN BASTINAC – Geelong

Smart inside midfielder/forward with terrific contested ball winning ability. Vision, awareness and clean hands in traffic a feature. Clean foot skills off both sides other impressive assets. Vic Country U18 representative in 2009.

#29 KYLE HARTIGAN – Adelaide

No nonsense key defender with a strong aerial presence and ability. Finished 2nd in the Western Jets best and fairest last year. A current AFL –AIS scholarship holder.

#30 ALEX CAREY– Collingwood

Skilful inside midfielder who brings teammates into the game. Consistently good decision maker with great awareness and ball winning ability. Strong performer for SA at NAB AFL U18 Championships. AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

#31 DYLAN GRIMES – Western Bulldogs

Quick with great closing speed. Task-oriented with strong defensive skills and a sound ability to read the play. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2009.

#32 DAVID ASTBURY – St Kilda

Lead-up forward or defender with a great set of hands. Good pace and endurance for his size with sounds skills by both hand and foot. Vic Country U18 representative in 2009.

#33 RYAN HARWOOD – Essendon

Impressive inside midfielder/defender who represented Tasmania strongly at the NAB AFL U18 Championships with six clearances and 21 disposals per game, earning All-Australian honours. AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

#34 JAMES CRAIG – Melbourne

The dominant ruckman at the NAB AFL under-18 Championships for South Australia, earning All-Australian selection. Tap work at clearances is a feature of his game, as is contested marking.

#35 NAT FYFE – Richmond

Smart forward who reads the game extremely well and has good goal sense. Kicked four goals for WA against Vic Metro in NAB AFL U18 Championships.

#36 MARK HUTCHINGS – Fremantle

Tough inside midfielder with fierce attack on the ball. Handpassing, vision and endurance are strengths. Captain of successful WA U18 squad in 2009.

not the best draft for west coast:

Rohan
Moore
Ah Chee

If the same players were available at our picks i would be going with:

Lucas
Bastinac
Colyer

Would Sydney take butcher? I understand he is the best KPP in this years draft BUT Sydney already have White and Johnston, two very young and very promising KPF AND if they want a third, why not take bradshaw in the PSD, huge possibility that he will slip to their first pick,

Sydney need and want young mids with pace and good skills, hence why they were so desperate to get pick 3 from richmond so they could get martin. If they wanted a KPP they would have been content with pick 6 and butcher. I reckon they will take Rohan. He ticks all their boxes, fast + great skills.

I like the demons taking Black with Pick 11, good call there. But would we go for sheppard over carlisle if they were both available? I highly doubt it. It just gives that bit of added insurance that for whatever reason black flops, as first round KPP sometimes do, then we have a more than capable replacement in carlisle. Of course there is the flip side in which they both become guns and melbourne has a deadly forward line in a few years (Watts, Jurrah, Black, Bate, Carlisle, Wonaeamirri, Petterd, Maric)

If you ask me, that's far too many talls. Melbourne will only recruit 1 KPP from this draft because they only need one to compliment Watts and Jurrah. They need another creative player because Davey can only be around one part of the ground at once.

That is a shocking effort from a bulldogs point of view

Definitely. For starters, Jetta seems keen to stay in WA and along with that, is a mature recruit so I wouldn't be touching him, especially with players like Duncan, Bastinac and Sheppard still available. I would also probably vomit if we took Dylan Grimes ahead of Nat Fyfe.

Shit draft for Port, that would make me pull my hair out.

Incase you ask, in this draft I'd go:
#8 - Kane Lucas
#9 - Luke Tapscott
#16 - Brad Shepphard

that's right... **** key forwards (unless it's Butcher), we have enough Jack Anthony clones.

#16 NATHAN VARDY – Port Adelaide

Agile ruckman with excellent foot skills for his size. Ultra-competitive and very strong overhead. Tap work at clearances is a distinct strength. Vic Country U18 representative in 2009.

Honestly, don't let the retirement of Lade fool you. We have a stack of young developing ruckmen or ruck types - Lobbe, Redden, D. Stewart, Trengove*, J. Westhoff*.

If we were going to add a ruckman to the list it will be a mature-age such as Miekeljohn from PAMFC as basic insurance against Brogan's temper and Lobbe's x-factor to be used in there here and now, not another skinny kid who is 2-3 years' away.

Thats is exactly why I didn't give Melbourne another tall forward.

So would you rather have Sheppard, Fyfe and Sumner filling basically none of the dogs needs. I have looked over many phantom drafts looking at responses and you need a replacement for Eagleton so I chose Jetta, you need a kpd so I chose Grimes and you need another quick midfielder. You don't need inside mids, fwd flankers etc so I didn't choose them.
