Our first individual award is the Groove Medal, awarded to the Rat who put the ball through the big sticks more often than every other team mate. We struggled for goals this season - in fact the joke that did the rounds was, "What's the difference between Manchester City and the Sin City Swamprats? Man. City scores more goals." But 1 player contributed more than all others - I'm happy to present the award to SarahSmiles, kicked 34 goals - just 37 behind the 2 winners of the Fred Medal (doesn't sound many if you say it quickly). SS has been a stalwart at the Underground for a number of seasons, and was a key component in our 2 flags in seasons 27 & 29. He has decided to move to the Royals for a change of scenery in season 33: we wish him all the best, except when our 2 teams meet.

My sincere thanks to SarahSmiles for all he's done for us throughout his time as a Rat. We'll miss you mate, and please be assured that you're welcome back any time.

Round 5 v Phoenix by SarahSmiles

Round 5 saw the Sweet FA turn it's attention to the father of the Sim and all round good bloke Mobbs as he lined up for game number 500. However for the Rats, focus turned to the newly rebranded Phoenix as we travelled to the Eyrie.

A warm day in Sweet saw a fast start for the Rats with Catsnlakers drilling the post in the opening few seconds of the match. A duo of goals for the Phoenix courtesy of por_please_ya and NinjaSwan saw momentum shift into the Phoenix's favour, before I attempted to arrest the momentum by slotting a tight one away. Sadly the rest of the quarter continued much in the fashion the opening 5 minutes had been played in. The Phoenix kicked two and we returned fire with one of our own. Goals to Power Raid compact72 Quadzilla and a 2nd to myself saw us go into the first break 11 points down but with a tiny bit of momentum having kicked the last two.

This momentum looked to have almost carried into the 2nd quarter with GotTheGoodes missing an early chance. Despite this the signs were good and the Rats were playing dominant attacking Qootball. Unfortunately Red mist and SaintBilly did their best to kill that off with a few goals. RPCB slotted one from the pocket to keep the Rats within arm's reach yet a late flurry of momentum to the Phoenix saw them go into the big break 3 goals clear of the valiant Rats.

The trend of our quarters beginning with an attack continued, this time, resulting in me getting my third of the game. compact72 brought us within a straight kick. Unfortunately the Phoenix rallied and a flurry of goals saw them draw clear. The Rats finished the pressure strongly with a lot of attempts on the Phoenix goal resulting with a heroic last second goal to Catsnlakers which just kept us in it after the siren.

Rejuvenated after the break, the Rats came out looking to get another early one. Unfortunately, it was the Phoenix's turn for a fast start, missing thrice before Itsmyshow dealt what looked to be a knockout blow early in the last to bring the Phoenix 30 points clear. Three quick goals, two for myself and one for the evergreen Quadzilla suddenly made a game out of nothing and the Rats were coming from the clouds with the Margin standing at just two straight kicks. RPCB made that margin just 3 points a few minutes later and the supporters were going crazy! The Phoenix steadied however and condemned the Rats to defeat courtesy of Red mist. The incredible comeback fell a tantalising 9 points short in one of the best games of Qootball you'll see all season.

Round 6 v Wonders by SarahSmiles

Round 6 saw us take on a rejuvenated Wonders side, captained by Mozzie19 and slowly gaining the respect of the league for some high quality posting performances. Off the field, there was an atmosphere of venom and a dick measuring contest posting quality measuring contest between myself and croweater 41. This animosity promised to fuel a very interesting game.

The Wonders struck the first blow with new recruit Loonerty stripping Ant Bear and slotting a beautiful goal to give the supporters something to cheer about early. We had to wait almost 10 minutes for another score where the superstar rookie HirdsTheWord scored yet another invaluable goal to bring the Rats level. A goal to myself saw us take a 5 point lead into the 2nd term.

The low scoring nature of the game continued, with 5 minutes of play elapsing before Catsnlakers combined for a 7 point play. haydo and PVF equalised the game but halfway through the quarter, it was once again advantage Rats courtesy of Catsnlakers and ant555. The game looked to go into the main break all square in the wet but a last second stab at goal from myself flew wayward and gave the Rats a lead before we went in for a shower, beer and to change into a fresh jersey.

For the first time in 2 quarters, the Wonders hit the lead, with Loonerty again being the man to propel them into it. From there the Wonders lead continued to grow, with croweater 41 kicking a massive goal to send the Wonders 2 goals clear. Goals to Quadzilla and RPCB killed the Wonders momentum yet they still took a lead into the final change.

Said one point lead was quickly expanded upon courtesy of ClarkeM. Loonerty and former rat LukeParkerno1 combined to give the Wonders some breathing space. For the second week in a row, the Rats looked down and out earlier in the last. Unfortunately for the Wonders, they forgot to reckon for compact72 and ant555. The 4 point lead held until the final siren which saw the Rats steal a famous 4 point win in very wet conditions!

Round 7 v Bears by GremioPower

We came back from the Colosseum with 4 points. We had gone from 7th to 5th on the ladder. We were one game away from 2nd place. We would have an 8-point match against 4th-place Bears. It would be hard, but we were feeling good. Everything seemed to be going back to normal.

True, we would play away again; the third time in three weeks. However, we would just need to use the escalators from Los Carraras Mall to go for the match. Everything seemed indeed fine.

Or so we thought. Ultimately, the trip upstairs ended being the highlight of the day.

Ant Bear stopped their FF. The rest of our defense managed to limit their shots, but that was pretty much all the good that happened for us. The rain didn't affect the Bears, who would score goals regardless of the difficulty of their kicks.

After an even Q1, our mids and forwards ran out of gas. We lost the middle quarters by a combined score of 9.4:58 to 1.5:11. And, despite showing a strong desire to mount a comeback, a wasteful 3.7 Q4 meant that we would never get it. The final score was ugly:

Bears 14.5:80 - 6.13:49 Swamprats

We dropped to 8th. At least, we will be back home to face the Fighting Furies (4-2, 5th).

Round 8 v Furies by GremioPower

S32R08 - SWA 9.8:62 - 8.11:59 FUR

In one word? Wild! It was a warm afternoon, and we play under a roof, but the game went on as if there a storm within the Underground.

- Context:
This was the first home game since R04. The road trip wasn't as good as we had hoped, winning only once in three matches. With a 3-4 record, we were seating at 8th on the ladder.

The good news was that there were 6 teams tied ahead of us. So, we were only one win behind second place. The bad news was that we were only one win ahead of the 11th place.

Our visitors were ahead of us, with a 4-3 record. The Furies were 2nd on points, but 5th on percentage. They were coming out a victory over the Warriors.

Our form was LWLWL; while the Furies, WLWLW. So, it wasn't a surprise that the bookies had us as slight favourites for this match.

- Match:
Q1
The game however couldn't have started worse. In 14', we were losing 14 to 1. At QT, we were down 27-7. They had scored 7 times; we, only twice.
Q2
Still, this game was wild, remember? As if there was a strong wind towards one end of the field, in Q2 the roles were reversed. The Furies managed to score a single behind right before HT, while we kept putting the ball at their end. Four goals to none, and, at the major break, we were leading: 33-28.
Q3
The third frame started as a sequal of the previous one. We were on fire! After 6 minutes, we were leading by 19. Then, we stopped. Worse, they came. When the 3QT siren sounded, the visitors were once again on top: 48-47.
Q4
The last period started, and we were back in business. Two behinds, a goal, another behind, another goal, and with 16' to go we were 14 points ahead. Then, we stopped. Worse, they came.

It was wild! Remember?! Point by point, literally! (they scored four consecutive behinds), the difference went down. A goal cut the difference to mere 4 points with 4 minutes left on the clock.

Of course, not much later, their FF had the ball 30m out for the lead:

Our defense send the qooty as far as they could. Our mid locked it at the spot. And we won.

Swamprats 9.8:62 - 8.11:59 Furies

Before we return to the count, I'd like to present the Drazah Medal to our rookie of the season. This was a tough decision, as the class of season 32 were exceptional. No less than 4 of them received individual recognition throughout the course of the season, so presenting the Drazah to just 1 of them seems unjust. But to quote Rex Hunt, the winner by a bee's diaphragm is darthmann, with an honourable mention to mike ross. Well done to both of you, and congratulations to darthmann for taking home the Drazah Medal. We look forward to watching you take your form to the next level in season 33.

Round 9 v Dragons by Catsnlakers

In Round 9 we played the always entertaining Dragons outfit, & unfortunately our old mate Hatchy1992 & the fire breathers were able to score a comfortable victory by 38 points. But even so we had some great individual performances, lead by captain courageous himself philreich who busted a gut all day! SarahSmiles was dangerous all day in attack, whilst darthmann & mike ross gave us a glimpse into the future!

Round 10 v Gumbies by Catsnlakers

In Round 10 we would play & humiliate the Gumbies by the tune of 44 points. This match showcased the Rats in all our glory ( no we weren’t all naked ) as we ran rings around the hapless Gumbies! There were few contributors in this rout, but a couple of standouts were the veteran in ant555 & the bubbly one herself Ticky009. In this match we had proven once & for all our credentials to the league!

Round 11 v Royals by Catsnlakers

Our Round 11 opponents would be the so called upper class of the SFA in the Royals! What would eventuate over these four quarters would prove how much ticker the Swamprat organisation possesses, because at quarter time we found ourselves 5 goals down & in major trouble! But from there we gradually fought back until we had broken the spirit (& crowns) of our opponents, we would eventually run out 28 point victors in a famous comeback. Up forward both RPCB & Catsnlakers were ever dangerous with 4 goals each, & Power Raid played a blinder also!

Round 12 v Roys by Catsnlakers

In Round 12 our opponents would be the good guys of the SFA in the Roys, unfortunately for us our ‘friends’ decided to hand us an almighty thrashing to the tune of 62 points, it was a procession from the team with the highest age demographic...Out of the darkness shone some light for us, with TheDarkDwarf cracking in all day, as well as GotTheGoodes. After this match the skipper delivered us a stern lecture, & the feeling was it was an aberration.
