Crows supporting friend after Thursday night said words to the effect of "surely they can't continue with him"

when those across the swamp pick up on it, it's only a matter of time before the mainstream falls in line

probably will take another year though

I actually love how this board is a bit of a meme in that everyone here is so negative despite an acceptable W-L record. I sh*t you not this had extended to and is known on the AFL reddit page

I mean sure, if you’re benchmarking against 2011/12, or Carlton, the Hinkley era’s been bloody grouse.

And that’s exactly what neutrals, the wider media and huge swathes of our own fanbase and staff think.

Contrary to what thundercloud likes to believe, I've noticed more and more discontent at home games.

4 years ago I was probably the only person in my bay that thought we needed a new coach.
This year I've heard multiple people questioning Hinkley and his assistants.

Might be a 5 year delay, but people are slowly figuring it out.

John Butcher had 20/11/4 as we put them to the sword at the Gabba to the tune of 94 points as recently as 2016.

Meanwhile, someone on Twitter just told me that given what poor old Ken walked into, maybe it takes 10 years to rebuild a club 🤏

I reckon Butcher was dropped one game later.

Sack Hinkley

This isn't soccer or some shit where all you can hope for is a good win loss record to keep your place in amongst the best. We have a fixed league with fixed teams and flags first, grand finals second, are the only measures of success.

We have had no success.

Brad Scott is the only other coach in the history of the game to have lasted long as Hinkley without even making a grand final. And they sacked him.

Coaches aren't hired to piss around mid table with the occasional top 4 finish a couple of times a decade.

Ken is almost unprecedentedly average at his job. Not bad for a little batter club from Alberton I suppose.

What's "acceptable"?

I don't think in 10 years we are going to look back and go oh boy we won many home and away games. We're gonna judge the decade on how many flags we win, that's all that matters.

Right now Norf have an atrocious win/loss, but they have LDU, and will be getting Horne. If those guys go on to win a flag in a few years and we continue to be a mid-card also-ran who gets leapfrogged every season for a decade (because its a tough competition and somebody has to get leapfrogged), who was more successful in 2021?

We exist to have an acceptable W - L record.

I always find the Ken lovers don’t actually go to games, they are watching on TV listening to the pro Ken nonsense or form their opinions based on checking the results or highlights.

Another person who has no rear vision mirror of results? An acceptable win-loss record. Is that the standard we are setting now as a football club. Maybe stick to reddit pages.

The one statistic that matters to me is the fact that only 6 (I think) rival clubs haven't played in a grand final since our 2007 calamity. Even modern day basket cases like Adelaide and St. Kilda have made it to the last Saturday in September since then.

One thing Ken gets right is that it's a tough competition and it's really hard to win a premiership. Double the degree of difficulty as a non Victorian team where the deck is well and truly stacked against us. This is why we have to stop judging ourselves against our own miserable standards. We have to be ruthless in our pursuit of success or we will never get there.

Yeah its 7 if you use Ken's reign only I believe.

2013 onwards:
Adelaide - 1
Collingwood - 1
Fremantle - 1
Geelong - 1
GWS - 1
Hawthorn - 4
Richmond - 3
Sydney - 3
West Coast - 2
Western Bulldogs - 1

Those missing are:
Brisbane - in good shape to make it this year
Carlton - perennial basketcase
Essendon - been through a major scandal that wrecked them
Gold Coast - basketcase, have never even made finals
Melbourne - in good shape to make it this year
Norf - perennial basketcase
St Kilda - went through rebuild after making two gfs in 2010 and 2011

All 7 of those teams have changed coach since 2013 because they deemed their performance unacceptable (as have several in the top list)

Koch: "Ken stays on as coach until Carlton beats Gold Coast in a grand final."

You know, when it was becoming obvious Choco had run his race, and was at increasing loggerheads with a fractured board, you could at least understand the rationale and steely resolve of his staunchest defenders.

Son of a club legend, and a club icon in his own right: premiership player, premiership coach, the torchbearer of one of the game’s great family dynasties with a commanding presence spanning decades. Black and white blood flowing through his veins…

Fast forward to the current situation.

Did Melbourne fans feel this way about Neil Balme?
You cant compare the two. Choco was imploding. He presided over a fractured playing group, nepotism and favoritism reigned. Losses were coming thick & fast, and would only get worse, and the the entire club was on its knees. Son of a legend and club icon, or not, it was so blatantly clear he had to go.

Ken on the otherhand is a media darling. The players love him, and other players want to come to Port to play for him. The club is in the best position it has ever been, financially, sponsorship-wise, and has a top playing group that at its best can win the flag. Its quite understandable that people defend Ken.

The problem is he is just not a great coach. If people here are honest, they will admit that he is in many ways a good coach. But the reality is that "good" doesnt cut it in a "great" club. The great coaches win premierships, and keep winning them. There is no question that Port is a great club, IMO it is special, unlike any other. This club needs and deserves a great coach.

Having said that, I think Ken has still done a lot for Port. He has attracted good players to us, has fostered a good spirit, has gained the respect of the AFL world for himself and the club. But the reality is as a football coach, he looks to be out of tricks ... just not good enough.

Really for him it has to be a premiership or bust ... Surely Koch and the BOD can see that?
