Heard you calling for Asterix.

Most important that we now go and replace Sam with an extremely good coach. Swallow some price and make a monster offer to Sumich as senior assistant. Our net profit is north of $10mln so make him an offer he can’t refuse.
isn't there a soft cap in place to avoid seeing rich clubs luring coaches and etc for huge coin?

A soft cap yes. We pay something like 50% of what we spend to the AFL. So paying Sumich say $400k means if we exceed the cap would really cost us $600k.

Let’s be honest - it would not take some creative people long to have joint roles that are outside the cap and bury the costs in NGA, WAFL, community development, game day, ra ra ra

Having been an expat - year 2 is always the hardest for partners. Add to that a parent back home in need - simple decision really. Not sure how many siblings his wife had do another consideration.
Yeah, year 2 was the hardest for my wife too - it actually got easier after that as she built up a network bit it really does depend on the family pull home.

When we decided to head back to Perth, it kind of came from the blue. But once we decided we wanted to go, we just wanted to go and were gone within 6 weeks.

Can relate to that .
Once we had decided to make the move it all happened very quickly.
Similar to you two months from the decision and all our stuff was in a container and on route back across the seas to Australia.

From the TV segment on 360 I have no doubt that the Mitchell’s case in genuine and consequently he leaves on good terms in my opinion.

Sad to see him go as I believe he has made a contribution to our improved midfield and disappointed for what may have been.

Shit happens we dust ourselves off as a Club and get on with finding ourselves a suitable replacement.

Why come all this way over for a 4 year deal then? Why not 2 or 3 if you weren't 100% sure you could handle it?

Every possible scenario would have been thought of prior to Mitchell and his family accepting the deal and deciding to weigh everything up before coming over here. Homesickness is a poor excuse, both for him and his partner. Be a big boy and live with the decision you have both made. If his missus is fed up, so what? She knew what she was getting into. I'm sure the travel, lifestyle, his new role etc etc was all explained to them and discussed over and over.

Only thing i could possibly think of which would be an acceptable reason for him leaving... is if a the issue is back in Melbourne, and it requires his attention. Like a family member going through dramas/health or something along those lines. Nothing to do with his perth family.

Either way, we're not going to be finding out about it any time soon, and there's nothing we can do about it

Dark Sharks
Mitchell has already come out and explained that his mother in law passed late last year and he was wearing a Dementia Awarness badge on a TV interview this week.
Reading between the lines is that it’s a health related matter with their family in Melbourne.
Having seen dementia up close and personal with my late Father it’s scary stuff and has a huge impact on all the other family members.
Like wise a family death can change family priorities and impacts your forward planning , well it did for me after I lost my mother.

Yeah mate, and like i said that's pretty understandable for him to leave if it's the case.

I haven't seen the interview on AFL 360 yet, just going by what i'm hearing in this thread. Looks like plenty of nonsense.

I thought his Mother-in-law has Alzheimer's and that his wife is extremely close to her Mother - perhaps her condition has deteriorated?
Her mum passed away a couple of yrs ago.

To the posters putting shit on him
He has improved your mid-field in the 2 yrs he’s been there. Your players acknowledge that.

He says he’s committed to winning a flag with WCE & why wouldn’t he be committed ? You are in with a massive chance to win it & that opportunity doesn’t come around very often at any club.
As if he’s not going to want to be a part of it. He’s professional

IF his wife is homesick, then he has every right to go home with her. WCE also have every right to hold him to his contract, but that would tarnish the reputation of your very well run club.

I really don’t think any of you would like the club to get a reputation that Tony Cochrane is getting at the Suns

Agree with all of this, I'd imagine the main issue for the club is he's breaking a heavily front loaded contract so will be interesting to see how that's dealt with...

I'm pretty sure the mother-in-law passed away well before Sam came to WA.

I reckon it's just a case of his wife being homesick.
No use making excuses. It is what it is.

Move on after the season.

I’m not privy to the contract but I would have thought coaches contracts wouldn’t vary too much from year to year.

Admittedly he may have got more $$ in his 1st year as he was virtually a playing coach.
Again that’s come from WCE players

Doubt the holding him to his contract talk will come true, if it did, he will work in Melbourne in some capacity in any case.

What some of us are upset about, and a Hawthorn fan should understand this better than anyone in regards to S Mitchell, is that we are potentially loosing a great asset to our club.

I doubt WCE would hold him either.
You aren’t that type of club. Well run clubs, like WCE, don’t run that way.
It’s like the Hawks posters getting upset over Bradley Hill & how we only got pick 23 for a triple premiership player. He wanted to go home, so HFC helped him.
Or those same posters going on about how much we paid for O’Meara. We committed to him, gave him our word. We had to make it happen at any cost.
WCE are the same type of club.

I fully understand your supporters being unhappy about losing him, I was unhappy when he left HFC, but those slagging him off & saying he should be shown the door now, need to realize he’s committed to helping you win this years flag. Which is highly possible

You’re talking to a very passionate Hawthorn supporter who watched his team lose Mitchell & Lewis 1 year, then Hodge the next.
All to other clubs, not retiring.
Retiring would’ve been easier to take :)

After winning 3 flags in a row I wouldn't have given a shit.

It's hard to know what the contract is. He may have been on about 700 at Hawthorn so part of the departure deal was that we paid part of his salary, probably 250 - 300k. Only AFL, clubs and players know the exact figures. What the 4 year contract deal with West Coast was, who knows? Apparently assistant coaches get in the 150 - 300 range, but you guys pay well and West Coast would need to make it attractive to relocate. It is also of note that he was bringing IP not only about the Hawks but also about playing the MCG, with it's extra width.

I can understand that you are peeved about the early departure, and the timing is bad for your finals campaign. At least you have another midfield/stoppage assistant.

Wow, you right we should be happy.

So the analogy so far is as follows:-
Planning to take an old school friend to the dance - ok date but not great by any stretch of the imagination.
Surprisingly ended up taking hot chick who moved next door to the dance. Wasn't expecting that but why not.
Feeling good about ourselves. Night going well.
Have incredible sex for part of the night.
Hot chick decides to go back to ex.
So now were told that original old school friend still wants to dance with us so all is looking good.

Yep - that sure makes me happy.

Just saw the interview on AFL360.

I think he summed it up when he said that he bought a house in Perth, he committed to living there and it hasn't worked out. In a situation like this where the full story isn't public you can either choose to believe the worst or assume the best of a person's intentions. Just remember that being bitter is like drinking rat poison and waiting for the rat to die.

Heard someone on radio yesterday say that part of the reason we let go Dean Cox and Justin Longmuir was to accommodate Mitchell. Not sure if that's true but if so I think we should be demanding some form of compensation.
