If the cap was that tight why go after Vickery ?

Because Vickery screams future captain and the man to rest the "games record holder" crown from Brent Harvey ? :D

Has to be a bigger play....to give up your best player and legend of the club for a kid that hasn't played in two years and a Richmond dud, would go down as the worst list management in history...something big is brewing...

Hawks to nab a wounded Ablett in addition to a wounded JOM ? :D

Love Sam Mitchell as a player. Probably Top 5 for me in B&G. Can also recall after the 90s to early 2000s we were a mediocre team. Since then 4 premierships and a 3peat. The club is bigger than the player. If it means to open our premiership window again. To do that we need to be innovative & get some fresh talent and energy as we haven't had access to early draft picks. It just means West coast will be my 2nd favourite team.

And strangely the talk with clarko on brownlow day was barely 2 weeks ago.
Pretty certain Mitch was in Melbourne grand final week not jetting from byron bay and NZ.
Again 2 more things
1) Why would hawthorn make deals in july for new players in the HOPE of other players leaving, you unaware of how professional we are. Further to that do you honestly believe Mitch would be the one pushed first?
2) Sam is a dedicated family man, so the fact it's better for his kids to start prep uninterrupted means in 2/3/4/5 years means he wont disrupt primary school education. Long time til the kids in high school.
All is good here.
Not the only person with links to the Mitchell/Degenhart family.
I believe this to more truthful

Can't say I agree with the comments re Clarko on this thread.

The guy is a coaching legend, innovator and ultimate 'club first' person.

This would be a list management decision that comes from several key people, including GW, Fages when he was there, etc. Clarko would no doubt have had a say, and important say, but not his decision alone, and sounds like Sam had a say originally, though it seems a little grey on the 12 months since that point.

I'm on the record already as I'm SHATTERED with this news, but I have to cop it on the chin as I love this club. Just a bit upset he'll go to another premiership contender.

The Handbaggers lost Ablett in his prime and won a Premiership

We lost Buddy in his prime and won 2 more

All is not lost without Sam, but shattered still.

I'm wondering if the Vickery contract is forcing the club's hand on this move?........

I doubt this is as complicated and insidious as the media may try to end up painting it. This legit sounds like a friend doing another friend a BUSINESS based favour.

Sorry if i'm repeating an idea that has already been shot down (as i expect it to be) but in a desperate search for some benefit to us for losing future hall of famer (and more importantly my 2nd favourite player ever!) I was wondering if perhaps the potentially suddenly freed up cap space next year is a chance to structure a potential JOM contract so heavily front ended that no team would touch him in the National Draft (or maybe even PSD) allowing us to take him through that vehicle if GC continue to be an impasse at trade negotiations?

I don't like the idea and it's premised on Sam WANTING to go to WC for his coaching ambitions but perhaps it is an immediate silver lining if there is one? As you say to lose Sam just for Jaeger would not feel right but if it's also in Sam's best interests perhaps??

Hodge and gibbo were shit this year why push out Sam he's the fabric of this club as mentioned!!! There has to be more to this! I can't even believe it's happening.... The world has gone mad I thought this was a beat up.... As usual where there's smoke there's fire!

Have some take it to the bank stuff on Mitchell. (Will not reveal source other than to say its immediate family)

Trade would've been done last year, but the Hawks refused to pay any portion of his 600k salary.
Mitchell thought this whole thing was dead in the water then and was actually blindsided by Clarko's approach this year.
Mitchell is actually pissed off about this deal and it only won't happen this year if the Hawks don't agree to pay at least $200k of the salary.
He is being forced out merely because the O'Meara and Mitchell salaries had already been agreed back in July and the Hawks TPP was worked out around at least 2 of the older boys retiring. When that did not happen this was Plan B.
Mitchell will return to Melbourne in 4-5 years time to senior coach at Hawthorn, but he's really jacked off how it's him that is being forced out when he considers 3 or 4 other senior players are finished and should've been moved on.
But he is really happy to be working with Simpson because they are such close mates. He would not join any other club.
Mitchell personally believes he has 2 years left in him, so retire and assistant coach is not a consideration.
Really shabby way to treat a champion, but no hiding behind Mitchell now for Lewis and co.

Sam has a contract for 2017 and so can stay or leave as he chooses. This offer is nothing but GOOD for Sammy as it gives him options that other players would kill to have. The only reason for him to feel bad would be finding out that he is not indespensible ... yet he should have known that.

This bombshell only shows why Hawthorn is a destination club.
Compare Harvey's departure from North with a "thanks for your service ... now out the door son", to this offer which is "thanks for your service, stay if you want or take a deal that will give you a guaranteed career after your playing days are done".

Like everyone else I feel a bit sick at the thought of Mitchell playing with West Coast, but I also have a level of pride in the way that the club is presenting options to a favourite son for the years to come.

Consider this, Mitchell may end up coaching Hawthorn one day. My guess, Mitchell was heading to WC in 2018 as an assistant. He has also helped Hawthorn win 4 flags.

Hawthorn may need the space, WC want a coach who can work hands on with the midfield and Clarko is thinking of how allowing a club champ to develop as coach, who may one day return is a reasonable idea.

I've cracked the case - Fyfe can't stand Mitch after last year's corkie incident, so we're just clearing the decks to smooth Nat's arrival at the Hawks either this year or next!

And sending him west to frighten Fyfe out of W.A.

I'd be equally livid if we pushed out Hodge or to a lesser extent Gibbo but in Sam's case as much as it kills me he's leaving he is going to a great situation for himself. Always wanted to be a coach and we know that, it's the right time for his young family and the opportunity is there in an environment he's happy to pursue it seems. Perhaps that is why we considered Mitchell over Gibson/Burgoyne/Hodge despite it making no sense from a pure on field football perspective?

Perhaps because we lost Ceglar?

So get another Ceglar on minimum wage.

Why spent 500k on a guy thats handy at best when it pushes out our current B&F winner, even if it is for 1 year, its the year where this group has its best chance of winning another flag.

This is huge mistake.

Yeh and he will go into the Hall of Fame as a Hawthorn AND West Coast player.

Joke

I'm an opposition supporter, but I've been waiting to make this post for years.

Alistair Clarkson is a master class and now he has brought NFL thinking into the AFL.

It's totally acceptible in the NFL to trade legendary franchise players to other clubs when they get to Sam Mitchell's age.

You clear salary cap, you get something for trade and you clear the way for younger players.

This situation is like the Indanoplis Colts trading Peyton Manning to the Denver Broncos. It worked out very well for Manning. The Colts had a number one pick which they used to replace Manning (Andrew Luck).

This is good Business practice.

If Mitchell had stayed at the Hawks he may have retired at the end of next season with no trade value for the Hawks.

Alistair Clarkson today has brought some NFL thinking to the Australian game and it's not before time.

Well done Alistair Clarkson.

If Sam Mitchell has a coaching job at the Eagles after he finishes playing then it's better for Sam as well.

Here's a short list of players who were just " handy "
Hale
Gibson
Burgyone ( and had shot knee )
Lake
Shall we continue or shall we hold off on huge mistake statements?

If salary was so tight then surely they would have at least inquired about including part of Roughie's pay outside the cap
We must be confident on Roughy...

To give up Mitchell we must be getting something very good in direct return. A second round pick or a slight upgrade of picks is not worth it. If we were in Richmonds positions and struggling to make the 8 with our next challenge 4-5 years away it would make sense. This benifets the Eagles and Mitchell but Not Hawthorn.

Are you serious
Have a read of what eagle supporters think of him

Emma Quayle has also said he is re-signing with us as well. He has no current trade value.

Good post mate. Many here are letting sentiment cloud their business decision.

And since then the Broncos have played in two Superbowls and the Colts suck. Not exactly a great example.
