This is insane stupidity.

He is our best player, our B&F, leading Brownlow vote-getter, the leading Brownlow vote-winner of all-time for goodness sake. How on earth is it a positive thing that he play for another team? His ability to use the ball and his vision is a once-a-generation skill.

I am used to Sam being under-rated by outsiders (AA selectors), but not by our own. He is the important player there. Without him we are lost.

He can get an assistant coaching gig anywhere at anytime with his pedigree. I just fail to see any benefit to this deal at all. Pick 33? That is a joke. Salary cap space? Since when was that a benefit? It should've been a known quantity going in to trade period, not after....

This is just to cover up some errors by HFC, bringing in unknown average players on high salaries and they stuffed up the salary cap. They just don't want to admit to these new players there has been a stuff up.

The only person who would listen to leaving hawthorn was Mitchell because he was sold a lemon:... you can ease into an assistant coaching role there... what garbage. He could have that role wherever and whenever he wants....

This is deplorable and anyone thinks it is a win-win is either deluded or has been entirely misled by media types who need something to talk about.

It is just about HFC covering their stuff up.

Furious.

Sorry for the rant.

Abso- mother-freaking-lutely!!!!!!

Nailed it 100%

Mate, I'm as shattered as you are, and you are absolutely entitled to vent, I know I have posted at least 4 times that I'm shattered.

I just have to say I strongly disagree with your references to Management stuffing up the cap and trying to cover it up.

1) Sam himself this was first brought up 12 months ago and he wasn't totally against it then (though it got parked, and maybe he thought that was that)
2) AFL clubs are run as well oiled businesses (most of them, certainly we are), and we have one of, if not the best (without AFL draft manipulation) list managers to date in the AFL in Graeme Wright. I just can't see them making that kind of mistake.
3) There are many other players they could have cleared without anyone raising an eyebrow or questioning the club, if it was because they went over the cap with the new signings. Imagine they are $200 maybe even $400K over? They could've moved on O'Rourke, Schoey, Delisted Spangher, all with much less media spotlight.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN, truly I do, I love Sammy, I just respectfully disagree with your point on a conspiracy over it. Hope you stay true to our club (I'm sure you will) as they've been bloody brilliant to us and we have to trust them, lest we become like other club's supporters and have board challenges every other year (hello Richmond?)

If you really think this then you best come out and say Clarko sold the Lemon. This has not only been rubber stamped by Clarko, but appears he has been the person to raise it. If I have learnt anything over the past decade in charge its that he loves his players and would never do anything wrong by them. Especially not Sam.

This seriously sucks and I'm shattered too. But who are we to judge a decision, more like options provided, by the greatest coach of all time. If we are hurting how do you think Clarko is feeling? But I put my faith in him and believe he is committed to not ensuring a Brisbane fall into irrelevance...

If Sam said no to this then no-way Clarko pushes him. I still feel he had HFC at heart with this decision by citing it may mean others don't have to leave because of the cap. In time we may see it as one of the most selfless moves and our love for Sam will only grow...

a very sad day for the hawthorn footy club..
who ever would of thought sam mitchall could be traded.
but many of u have got this wrong he had told clarko a yr early about wanting to coach..
clearly told clarko he would prob retire next season or the yr after in which case we would lose hodge burgoyne mitchall all in the same yr..
this is probably a result of giving hodge one more yr.. retire hodge or trade mitchall..
it will be very intresting to see how our mids go without him he literally carried us all season but that bein said we are bring in
positives - two guys under 23 absoulte jets come in
- we keep all our stars under 28.
as much as i hate it its a genius move one that should allow us to sign another big fish next yr..
clarko a visonary!!

Can't work out how his salary may have been a factor considering only half of it goes into the cap as he's veteran listed is he not?. Disappointing day really. I thought we were all in for next year's flag but clearly not.

Apologies for the intrusion, I've just awoken in the UK and coming to terms with this bombshell!

Sam Mitchell has been one of my favourite players of the past decade - a freak in close, beautiful user of the footy.

I honestly couldn't figure how you guys would even consider putting him up for trade. It reminded me of when Hodge took his captaincy, or the recent shamble between North Melbourne and Harvey.

I hope I've missed something because from the outside this simply looks disgraceful.
Shithouse day to be a hawks supporter we landed Tom Mitchell but I don't even care our greatest ever player is leaving and will get jack shit for it... How on earth does that make sense? I think the hawks made a mistake and because they can't afford Sam they've pushed him on... Earlier ..... I've decided regardless of the premierships and the glory that there's no point following the hawks if this is how it ends up... I'm heartbroken he was my favorite player ever. Never got to meet him and now never will:(

No Vets list anymore so I don't think the discount is there either.

No hope of next years flag as we have lost our best player, hopefully Clarkson can build a team to challenge in 4 years time.

No point following the Hawks if this happens? Alrighty champ, the club is bigger than fair weather fans. We all love Sammy, but you're approaching bex and a lie down territory.

vetarns list was scrapped few seasons ago.
hodge gibbo burgoyne mitchall prob all on anywhere between 600 -750. the first 3 took big pay cuts this yr.

The more I think about it and the more I read about GC digging in their heels on this, the more I think this is about getting O'Meara.

Maybe it's wishful thinking (and meant for the 'Hypothetical' thread), but assuming we had our cap all worked out to get Tom, Vickery and JOM. They've planned for this for weeks, maybe even months now.

They probably didn't count on GC being as stubborn as they are. So they've given up trying to trade for JOM, as evidenced by giving Sydney our first pick, which they could've bundled with CG and given them a player like Shiels or Langford and they trade pick 14 (and maybe 19) to Brisbane for Hanley.

Of course that wont happen now because GC are being stubborn or Brisbane wanted more.

So lets say they had $600K set aside for JOM. They will clear between $400 to $600K with Sam's contract (assuming reports are correct), and front end year 1 of JOM's contract to $1M+ and tell him to go to the draft. Even Essendope doesn't have that kind of cap space, nor would Carlton even if they got rid of Gibbs because they want something in return.

JOM comes to us at no player/picks cost. Not without risk, but we've called bluffs before (taking Roughy at 2 knowing Richmond were unlikely to take Buddy at 5).

I'm hoping this is the 'bigger picture' that we're missing

After a bit of thought, I'm actually okay with this. Sam has been a bloody champion for us but next season was probably going to be his last. If we are to have TOM (now with us) and JOM fit again and playing, this means two mids from the current list are sitting it out, or being 'managed' throughout 2017.

Someone may correct me if I am wrong but Sammy was one of, if not our highest paid player, so this alleviates any cap pressure with the above additions to the side.

It's a great opportunity for him to start his coaching career, something he had become greatly interested in during recent seasons. Good luck, and if the move does go through, thanks so much for your service ! It's been a long and happy journey, and no doubt you'd be welcomed back if that return home happened in future years. Deep down I wish he simply retired and remain a one-club player, however he certainly has something to offer next season.

I'm just so glad it's not a move to Sydney :) Get used to this though... the carefully managed curtain call for the old guard has started.

My turn to rant. Mostly at the petty short sighted selfish reactions by many supporters in this thread.

Of course it's sad to lose Mitchell and it's right to be upset. But from what been said by Mitchell, Clarko, GW, Mitchell's manager, West Coast execs this is being done with the full support of all parties. I find it impossible to believe otherwise.

If we wanted to be a d$#%head club we would be flogging him to the highest bidder or squeezing WCE to try and get a 2nd round pick and make the trade difficult. Instead we are showing respect to a legend of the club helping him set himself and his family up for the next stage of his life. And giving us cap space to renew and rebuild at the same time. It shows we care about our players and we care about our relationships. It's smart, it's brave, it's risky but it's probably going to benefit us in the long term. Clarko and co have earned the right to make the proposal and the decision. Four flags does that.

I can't believe the spin some fans are putting on this. Suggest you listen to his interview he did this morning. If he's upset then he should be getting an acting job when he retires not a coaching one.

Alright answer me this why Sam Mitchell? Why our best player by miles? Why not gunstan? Why not shiels???

I can't even see that post but I can certainly imagine it
