One who has not figured at all in these discussions. That player is Peter Hudson.

I would have those three at the top, too. Matthews definitely the best of all time. I would put Cyril up there in terms of excitement. Those four had the ability to rip a game open any time they got onto the field.

Knights and Cyril were/are probably the smoothest, most composed of that bunch. Matthews was the gutsy, tough, a brilliant contested ball winner and gaol sneak. I found Hudson weird to watch - he looked like a one day old foal - all legs, arms, a bit uncoordinated but freakish in his ability to win the ball. Very frustrating for opposition fans, because he would look beaten, only to have the ball magically fall into his hands.

I remember a game where hudson was at the back of the pack, and at the last moment he went right, the ball entered the pack, bounced of fists and hands hit the ground in front of the pack landed slightly off center bounced to the right where Hudson was waiting for it, turned and kicked a goal. An opposition fan said "Lucky bastard!" My father replied with "It's not luck when he just keeps doing it." And it did. The ball just ended up finding its way into Hudson's hands because he was so good at reading the ball's flight and its interaction with the play. People often said he wouldn't have scored as many goals if he wasn't at glenferrie where the pockets were so narrow, every kick is right in front. I would argue it was the hardest ground for a full forward for the exact same reason, there is very little room to find yourself on your own, but he kept doing it.

Matthews had the best sidestep in football, Mitchell is great at it, but Matthews actually made opposition players fall over tackling the air where his body was when they initiated the tackle. His goal of the year vs North on the boundary was brilliant. Surrounded by a few north players, he stepped towards each of them they'd dive for him only to hit the ground until he was standing on his own and kicked the goal.

Knights was just a freak. At the junction oval once against Fitzroy, we were behind, Ian Paton (I think) tapped it down, Knights had streamed in to the square from CHB sharked the tap and booted it long intoo the ward line where it bounced and no one could get a clean possession. A pack formed, and Knights grabbed the loose ball and kicked a goal. He'd run in a straight line from CHB, kicked the into the forward line about 30 m out, kept running chased down his own kick and lifted the entire team.

Now I have been around for a very long time and seen all our premierships. I would not even try to rate a single player as our greatest of all time. Lethal is probably my vote and Mitch would certainly be up near the top of the list, but I am not even sure he rates above Hodgey, who has much more to consider than mere Brownlow votes.

Regardless of this GOAT talk, there is only one player that I would actually drag my drunken arse out of bed to go and watch. One who has not figured at all in these discussions. That player is Peter Hudson. Being a supporter means you love go and watch the game, watch the team. As we all do. But Huddo was actually a reason to go on his own.

I am one of Huddo's greatest fans, and he was a pure champion, the by goals per game, the Bradman of full forwards. However, Peter Knights was just such a brilliant player, back or forward, took spectacular marks consistently, and also had that ball carrying dash out of the back 50 that is so highly appreciated in today's football. In my opinion he was the complete footballer, and the best player ever to watch, and that includes greats like John Colemen and Ted Whitten senior.

Not really my place to comment - but I've gone through the same thing, trying to compare Peter matera to Juddy and cuz. It's hard given the different eras etc. but I feel the fact that this is now the professional era, there's a lot more talent on the field each week etc, that performances nowadays are just that bit better than the VFL era

All this thread is confirming is just how lucky we are at Hawthorn.
For sheer brilliance, is there anyone better to watch than Cyril?
Surely, Poppy is the most determined player in the comp.
The two above take marks on a weekly basis, that are contestants for mark of the year. Men their size aren't expected to do this.
I now look for next generation players who will be worthy to mention with all the champions in this thread. We have great expectations for Burton and O.Meara, but there will be others, and this is what will keep us at the top for some time yet.

Loving the discussion here!
How lucky are we at Hawthorn?

Especially us older supporters!

Right on Davo. I had to suffer (except for a little respite in 1957) until I was 21 years old before I tasted the sweet success of a premiership. Then, another 10 before the second. However, to think that over the next 45 years we would average one every 4.085 years is unreal.

We, the supporters are so lucky. We should give a round of applause, not only to the great players we have had, but also to the quality of people we have had off field, without whom those premierships would not have been possible.

Mitch is one of our greats. Too difficult to assess when it's all raw. At this I stage Dermott slightly higher but we are lucky at Hawthorn as most are multiple premiership champions. Let's let the rose tint settle in like it has for the others. Sounds like Leigh was more a blood red tint though.

Matera was mentioned with Judd and Cuz- Matera for me easily. What a great player.

This trade broke my heart but if it's for the better of Mitch, his family and the future of the club than i'm for it. Burton should take Mitchells number. Wouldn't be too annoyed about West Coast winning a premiership if the great man was in the team. Deserves every single premiership and another brownlow.

btw. if your interested there's a trade game that is trying to get up and running atm.
Does anyone want to join this Trade Game. Hawthorn is untaken as of yet. You can play as any other untaken team though too. 7 spots left. I'm playing as West Coast

Sam is our greatest midfielder, and probable top 5 Hawk all time.
His tricks are different to Lethal's when the GOAT was roving, but every bit as special.
The difference is Mathews went forward throughout his career - full time for the last 3rd - and and could do what in all sports is considered the hardest and most special of gifts. He could finish. He scored, scored some more, made goals for others, drew attention so running players could have a ping, was harder than granite and would keep on coming.
At his height, so bloody strong in the air, and balance like no-one else when picking it up off the deck.

Sam's skills are as good as Jarman's for mine.
Unbelievable feet, hands and brain.
We are Hawthorn.

Had to check his wiki page as I didn't believe it. 42 possessions and 11 goals, that's out of this world.
Sets the bar pretty high, doesn't it?
