I've heard there will be no sanfl coverage on the abc for the first two rounds. Round 3 the coverage will start as far as i know. I think it may be to do with the abc helping out with olympic coverage and there is another sporting event which they are helping out with at the moment.

I hope you are right because if there is no local footy coverage at all, then it really is disgraceful.

Some ripping games scheduled for this week. Port vs Bulldogs should be a beauty :thumbsu:

Or watch the 1973 Grand Final between Kerley's Glenelg and Pattersons Roosters on Foxtel 4.30am tomorrow morning;)

from the footy sa archives March 2006

the first two rounds of the SANFL will not be broadcast on ABC TV.

The same decision applies to other state football leagues ie VFL, WAFL, NSW Rugby & QLD Rugby League.

This is a national decision due to;

Round One - Many of the OB vans are in Melbourne hired for the Comm Games and won't be back in time. However it is believed that the SA van is available, but with all other states on "alternate" programming an exemption isn't going to be made for the SANFL.

Round Two - The ABC has made a commitment to a major Lawn Bowls tournament which will be broadcast nationwide in the Saturday Afternoon timeslot.

TV Broadcasts will commence as per normal from Round 3.

The SANFL & ABC TV recently agreed to a 3 year broadcasting deal to run until the end of the 2008 season.

On the plus side, check this out (also from footysa)

C31 Television in Adelaide are proud to announce their 2 SANFL shows for 2006.
"Total SANFL", starting April 2 at 12pm, will feature match reviews (and preview of any Sunday matches), a "Player Of The Year" award, "Step Back In Time", which is a feature interview of a famous SANFL identity from yesteryear and a "Club Corner" segment. It will also include "On The Hill", which is the fan's chance to have their say to us at a different SANFL ground each week, along with "The Games", pitting players from all SANFL clubs against each other in different contests.

Hosted by 5RPH's Chris Kendall, and featuring many members of the 5RPH Footy Team, the Advertiser's SANFL correspondents, Coast FM and other familiar names to SANFL followers, the one hour show will be the ideal show for local footy fans to get extensive coverage of their league.

"After over two years work, and some false starts, it is fantastic to be finally able to confirm the two shows", Kendall stated. "It is a real privilege to be leading a team of such dedicated SANFL followers and journalists who are looking forward to bringing fans a superior level of coverage of our great league. We will bring the followers the coverage they deserve, of our competition."

Tuesday nights will feature "SANFL Insight", a half hour show looking at some of the deeper issues of the league, and interviewing a feature guest. Set for an evening timeslot, this show will aim to examine a number of different issues and perspectives.

"We really look forward to the fans getting right behind us and supporting the only shows, outside the ABC's excellent match coverage, that will be dedicated to the SANFL on Adelaide TV in 2006."

The SA Amatuer League also has a show on Thursday Night on C 31 called Grass Roots.

Maybe it got in the way of:

2.00 pm: BOWLS: AUSTRALIAN OPEN: WOMEN'S & MEN'S SINGLES FINALS

That's exactly the reason it isn't on this week. Last week was because of the Commonwealth Games and national programming (facilities were available here but since they weren't available everywhere they didn't do it)

The ABC's coverage just becomes more and more woeful. As if a John Wayne movie and lawn bowls is more imporant than the SANFL. I'm expecting big things for the round 3 coverage and anything less should result in their switchboards being jammed. The ABC may televise the games but they obviously don't give a fat rats about the competition.

Maybe channel 9 should return to doing SANFL broadcasts once they lose the AFL rights - they already do the Magarey so why not.
