North Adelaide vs. Central District; Prospect Oval
West Adelaide vs. Woodville-West Torrens; City Mazda Stadium, Richmond
Port Adelaide vs. Glenelg; Alberton Oval
Sturt vs. Norwood; House Brothers Oval, Unley (ABC)

South Adelaide have the bye.

--

Drummond and friends, feel free to add your comments regarding the other teams/games. I only made this thread because Phil Davis and Tony Armstrong have both been named on the bench and look set to make their league debuts for the mighty Roosters.

The enigmatic Nick Gill has been named in the forward pocket but look for him to roam the forward 50 at will.

Sturt vs Norwood should be a good game but it's a bit disappointing that the huge clash between North and Central won't be on TV.

Eagles team for this week. Current and former Crows players in Bold:)

FF Cheep Salter Shirley

HF Rimington Grocke Jacky

C Allmond Powell Jarrad

HB Broadbent McGregor Stewart

FB P Fiacchi Hier Corbett

R Dabrowski McKenzie Cicolella

Int Miles, Rowntree, Lane, Fairclough, Davoren

Even though he is included as one of 4 ins to the senior team, I am doubtful Aaron Kite will make the league team. I hope I'm wrong but I'm confident in saying there will only be one change, Ah Chee in for Trotter. Kite named on the back flank for the reserves and Will Young in the back pocket.

Griffin named in the ruck for the Dogs, Symes on ball. Pumped to see Davis and Armstrong make their league debuts for North! :) Schmidt named in the centre for West, as he was last week and yet he spent the game in defence. Moran named in the ruck.

Wasn't Dabrowski on our rookie list in 2003 or somewhere around then?

Ill give my personal opinion on the 5 players from the NAFC v CDFC

from best to worst

5. Phil Davis (3rd tall back)
4. Nick Gill (roaming forward)
3. Johnathon Griffin (1st ruckman)
2. Tony Armstrong (winger)
1.5. Daylight
1. Brad Symes (Dont know)

Davis rebounded well
Gill got 4.1 but not much beyond that, ok he got the ball a bit in the first half but all of those were inaffective kicks
Griffin nice tackling, got to good places, but kicking terrible. Broke even with Acklain
Armstrong played in patches, good for 5 minutes bad for the rest of the quater
Symes, I honestly didnt see him do anything, not even get the ball. He got 1 behind though. Apparently

****ing bullshit. We should have won that game but basic skill errors cost us.

Davis was ordinary I thought, did a few good things but not the best debut.
Armstrong wasn't very good either.
Gill had a good game, could have been a hero with his effort in the last term but didn't get boot to ball. Not really enough for an AFL recall but was the best of the Crow lads today.

Symes, same as Riggy, didn't even know he was playing until the end of the game.

I didn't notice Griffin but I don't keep an eye on the opposition so I can't comment on his game.

I'll be brief because I've got stuff to do, but I saw a beautifully umpired game today at Prospect Oval.

The stats I recorded were:

Armstrong: 14 kicks, 8 handballs, 5 marks, 1 tackle, 1 behind.

I thought he looked good and should retain his spot in the league side for next week's game. A few of his kicks and marks were in junk time in the last quarter, but otherwise he was very good at finding space and didn't hesitate to give the ball of quickly.

Gill: 12 kicks, 2 handballs, 12 marks, 1 tackle, 3 goals, 1 behind.

Was very quiet in the first half but was moved to the wing for the second and gathered a lot more of the ball. Took a number of strong contested grabs and one of his goals was from about 40m out on the boundary line. Don't know if he's done enough to push his way into the Crows side, but he wasn't bad for half the game.

Davis: 5 kicks, 5 handballs, 3 marks.

Didn't set the world on fire and could be dropped back to the B's next week. He played at half back for the whole game and gathered the majority of his touches in the first half. He showed a couple of glimpses of excellent composure when in possession with the ball, including spinning around two opponents in the second term. A few times he was beaten by his opponent to the ball and generally failed to get a fist on the ball.

Griffin: 7 kicks, 8 handballs, 4 marks, 23 hit outs.

I'm hoping he gets a call up for next weekend to deal with Aaron Sandilands and today's performance could have only helped his cause. He was very good in the ruck and around the ground, although his suspect below his knees. I liked how he showed a little more aggression than what I'm used to from him. Listed as 196cm in the budget, he probably let Ackland get away a bit and into space, but otherwise he was great.

Symes: 16 kicks, 8 handballs, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal, 1 behind.

I thought Symes was great. He played very well in defence and his rebound was damaging. He was moved up the ground to the wing for most of the second half and had a great third term. He was quiet in the second, but great in the first. The goal he kicked was on the run and probably from just on the 50m line. Given our defence woes I'd say he would be a chance for a recall.

WTF. Davis did that little . OK im suprised bye that
and WTF Symes did that much . Sure you got the right person. Symes wore #6.

and Gill got 4.1

and BTW, good write up. Agree about Armstrong, and Griffen. But Acklain killed him around the feild.

Went to City Mazda stadium today.
(Bob) Moran rucked nearly all day did quite a serviceable job needs to get more intensity into his game. Major complaint is that his first movement is to handball, doesn't anyone believe in kicking the pill anymore?
Never paid attention to Jacky before in the SANFL but was very impressed.
Has a real burst of speed, went in hard and made good decisions. Can't say I've been impressed with his efforts before in Crows games but if he gets in and plays with that attitude he will be a real asset. A few established Crows forwards should be watching their back.Jacky may soon get the chance to flaunt his stuff.

Im not a Symes fan but i actually thought he played fairly well today. When Centrals were struggling in the third quarter they put him into the middle and he got 3 clearances straight away. His disposal as per usual was average but I thought overall he was good.

Davis had about 11 or 12 possesions and from what i saw 2 marks. He played deep in defence for most of the time he was on the ground. He played the whole first half but spent most of the second half on the bench. He struggled most of the time he was on and at times looked a bit timid going for the ball. But it was his first league game and not a bad start for him. His decison making and skills were a bit down today but he will get better. Very mobile for a key position player.

I thought Gill played really well especially in the second half. Kicked 4 goals and wouldve taken 10 or so marks. In the first half he was playing more on the wing but when they moved in more up forward thats when he looked most dangerous.

I was also impressed with Armstrong. He got plenty of the ball and generally his disposal would pretty good. The only thing I would like to see him improve is his hardness at the ball and tackling. He played on the wing most of the day.

Griffin was very good as well. He beat Ackland in the ruck and gave the dogs first use of the ball. He got plenty of the ball as well and took a few marks around the ground. His first quarter was very good in which he had about 6 or so possessions and 2 or 3 marks.

The North vs Centrals game was a brilliant game of football. After watching that crap last night that we dished up it was great go watch an entertaining game of footy. Watching us last night go sideways from one side of the ground to the other and then back and then bomb the ball in long into the forward line and give the forwards no chance, it was good to see more direct football today. The SANFL at times is a lot more entertaining than the AFL to watch.

I think the SANFL crowd numbers will start going crazy for this very reason.

Riggy, how did Wade Thompson & Marlon Motlop go if you dont mind?
Wade - quiet (~10touches) but whenever he got the ball he did something bloody impressive. 2 things come to mind. A 40m sprint down the flank to pocket takes a bounce and slots the goal from 5m out, with an opposition player on his ass the whole way. The other was running off the wing, kicks a nice low pass that was out of reach of 3 key central backs, and hits Acklain at the top of the goalsquare. But besides those 2 peices of brilliance he was inconsistent all day, and barely in it. (he was playing off the wing)
Motlop - more touches (~15 touches) but he handballs too much. Or chips it out onto the wing. You have the space, just run, maybe like Armstrong, Armstrong, Thompson and #5.

I made the short dash down Main North Road to Prospect too for the North v Centrals game.

A highly entertaining game played by both sides today. North got the jump early, but failed to take advantage of the deceptively strong breeze in the first quarter, only leading by 3 points.

The second quarter once again showed some brilliant free-flowing play. Centrals, however, took better advantage of the breeze and jumped out to a 26 point half time lead. North then played 20 minutes of great football, getting the lead back before Centrals turned it on in junk time with 3 late goals to create a 13 point lead, with the breeze and momentum.

That didn't stop North though, who got the margin back inside a kick quickly before Centrals kicked a couple of steadiers. Then a blatant shepherding free was paid to Matthew Westhoff 20 minutes into the final quarter, who kicked the sealer. Then once again Centrals turned it on in junk time kicking a further two goals to take out a hard fought 28 point win.

I must admit I was surprised (and disappointed) that the 5RPH team criticised the umps. I thought it was a little harsh from them. I actually thought the game was well umpired (a surprise considering Richard Williams was one of the umpires). The frees that were paid were there.

:D:D:D loves it. When I saw that Centrals kicked a fair lot of goals, I was like Symes had better kicked one! Then reading that....totally made my night! Thanks CG!

I said Friday nights game was crap. I didnt say every game we play is crap. I was just emphasising what a great game of SANFL footy it was compared to the sideways rubbish we played on Friday.

You think Friday nights game was a good game on many levels from Adelaides point of view. Are you serious? You have got to be kidding. Okay all night we went sideways and then when we did go forward we gave our forwards no chance. We were handball happy (even then we handballed to a player who would get caught straight away. Only on a handful of ocassions did we play direct footy.

The young kids were terrific but if we continue to play that rubbish we wont be going anywhere. It doesnt bother me that we lost because for me this year is about developing our youngsters. But it does bother me the style of footy we played Friday night.

Sorry Crowman32 but that is our game plan for 2009. We will switch play through handballs, then look to straighten up into the corridor and go forward. I'm not saying it's good or bad but it's what we will play all year and sometimes it's going to come unstuck and look really bad.

When it does work (which I believe it will more often than it doesn't) it's very effective and creates excellent movement through the middle.

Good luck to the forwards then. I think we will see Taylor Walker playing more SANFL footy than AFL if we continue to play this style. Even against Collingwood our forwards struggled with this style of footy even though we won. I really fealt sorry for Walker the other night coz he had no chance. The only times we kicked goals the other night was when we went direct eg. knights kicking long to Hentschel (goal), knights long kick to Porplycia (goal), Mcleod kicking to head of the sqaure (Tippet goal), Douglas kick to top of the sqaure (Maric goal) etc. Long direct footy will more games of footy than sideways rubbish.
