Was very impressed to see two different "Save The Cott" banners at The Oval during the Freo/Pies game.

God bless the Cott.

The Cott isn't going anywhere - it is the beer garden that is going. The new set of units will be built in the beer garden whilst the hotel will remain.

I'm somewhat upset that the beer garden is going as I've spent many a Sunday there, but what really sh*ts is the fact that the council are approving a high-rise development. This will set the tone and a heap of other developers will be putting in applications.

I still haven't come across a better suburb that Cott anywhere in Australia, and (apart from the Sunday session in the beer garden), what makes Cottesloe stand out is it's lack of highrise development and lack of unit blocks. There's probably as many houses along Marine Parade as there are sets of units, and there are only two sets of flats in the whole suburb that are higher than 3 stories.

Cottesloe sh*ts on Bondi, Manly, St Kilda, Glenelg, Gold Coast etc.

It is all still in the air, because there might be heritage issues with the building (which will force them to keep the front bar). Although if that isn't a problem, they can build a low level building on the front bar area and a higher level building on the beer garden area.

Hotels like these, and the Raffles should never be compromised.

I was under the impression that the proposal proposes to keep the front bar and build the 6-story monstrosity in the beer garden?

This is a Multiplex strategy - put in an app that keeps the original building but allows them to build their monstrosity. It is a pre-emptive compromise to give them a lot more chance of getting it approved.

I was under the impression that Multiplex was going to knock down the whole thing and then redevelop a bar area at the front albeit a much smaller one, because the council is pressuring them to at least keep a hotel on the site.

Hmmm,
The driving factor in the push for high rise development in places like Cottesloe is the price of land. Given the rate of increase in house prices along Perths coastal strip north of the river, and the shortage of vacant land, it is no surprise there is pressure for high rise, driven by prices and demand.
The price of real estate in Perth has been increasing at rates well in excess of the inflation rate on most other commodities, making it very attractive to investors.
Unfortunately that trend seems set to continue, and with it will come high rise along the coastal strip.
The outcome will be the kind of developments seen in SE Queensland in all the coastal suburbs and towns.

It is just wrong. I just hope when I'm an old fart, and I've got kids and I take them for a drive down to Cottesloe that they aren't confronted with a heap of high rise buildings with no culture or personality.

The whole thing ****s me, but I havent heard of this happening yet. Surely not - because I can picture down the line a flood of complaints from the rate-paying residents that the bar is too noisy.

The beer garden makes the Cott. Im also sad about this because if the beer garden goes there is likely to be a dramatic reduction in the number of scantily clad women there on a sunday arvo.

Nup, the actual proposal is to keep the front bar and the front facade. Multiplex are too smart to go all out and propose to dispose of the whole thing. The ol' keep the locals (somewhat) happy with a heritage compromise is a tactic of theirs to get their proposals accross the line.

This is inevitable, but the council should flick these self-interested developers off. I don't mind if Scarborough and City beach get the highrises, but Cottesloe is unique.

The fact that the walls around the Civic Centre are in urgent need of costly repair is a worry. Not to mention the availability of some prime sites such as The Cott, The OBH, Sea Pines, and pretty much every other commercial site along the beach front.

It's only a matter of time before the golf course get's the flick to make way for residential (which I don't have a problem with).

Thats the thing, why The Cott area? Why not buy out a couple of aligned residential blocks on Marine Parade and do those up for the high rises? Of all the areas along Marine Parade, it has to be the Cott?

1) Because they can buy it
2) Because of the zoning. It is easier to change the zoning of the Cott premises rather than a residential block.
3) Easier to get local residents on side seeing that many of them have been complaing about the noise after the Sunday sesh.
4) Much more costly to knock down and old block of flats. There's nothing to knock down in the beer garden.

I'm just not into anything over 3 stories in Cottesloe, period. I don't believe in recking the character of a fine area.

They can't knock it down its a sacred site.
You have just given me a great idea.

We should get a few Aboriginal elders together and get them to say it is Aboriginal sacred land, government won't go within a 2km radius of it after that.

Just say its on a Native Title and get them to kick up a big stink. Only problem might be to prove who owns the land.
