I was under the impression that Multiplex was going to knock down the whole thing and then redevelop a bar area at the front albeit a much smaller one, because the council is pressuring them to at least keep a hotel on the site.Originally posted by bunsen burner
I was under the impression that the proposal proposes to keep the front bar and build the 6-story monstrosity in the beer garden?
This is a Multiplex strategy - put in an app that keeps the original building but allows them to build their monstrosity. It is a pre-emptive compromise to give them a lot more chance of getting it approved.
It is just wrong. I just hope when I'm an old fart, and I've got kids and I take them for a drive down to Cottesloe that they aren't confronted with a heap of high rise buildings with no culture or personality.Originally posted by Hamburger
Hmmm,
The driving factor in the push for high rise development in places like Cottesloe is the price of land. Given the rate of increase in house prices along Perths coastal strip north of the river, and the shortage of vacant land, it is no surprise there is pressure for high rise, driven by prices and demand.
The price of real estate in Perth has been increasing at rates well in excess of the inflation rate on most other commodities, making it very attractive to investors.
Unfortunately that trend seems set to continue, and with it will come high rise along the coastal strip.
The outcome will be the kind of developments seen in SE Queensland in all the coastal suburbs and towns.
The Cott isn't going anywhere - it is the beer garden that is going. The new set of units will be built in the beer garden whilst the hotel will remain.
Nup, the actual proposal is to keep the front bar and the front facade. Multiplex are too smart to go all out and propose to dispose of the whole thing. The ol' keep the locals (somewhat) happy with a heritage compromise is a tactic of theirs to get their proposals accross the line.Originally posted by ozzult

This is inevitable, but the council should flick these self-interested developers off. I don't mind if Scarborough and City beach get the highrises, but Cottesloe is unique.Originally posted by Hamburger

Thats the thing, why The Cott area? Why not buy out a couple of aligned residential blocks on Marine Parade and do those up for the high rises? Of all the areas along Marine Parade, it has to be the Cott?Originally posted by bunsen burner
It's only a matter of time before the golf course get's the flick to make way for residential (which I don't have a problem with).

I'm just not into anything over 3 stories in Cottesloe, period. I don't believe in recking the character of a fine area.

They can't knock it down its a sacred site.

We should get a few Aboriginal elders together and get them to say it is Aboriginal sacred land, government won't go within a 2km radius of it after that.
