thought it was have having an early jab at the 09 draft, ive tried to make a few surprises here and there, so here it is:
1: (Melbourne) Tom Scully -
The obvious selection, scully is your classic midfielder and Melbourne would be crazy not to pick him.
2: (Melbourne) Jack Trengove -
The second best midfileder in the draft and i can see melbourne selecting him over butcher to strengthen their centreline.
3: (Richmond) John Butcher -
Slipped past Melbourne but i cant see richmond picking any1 over him. Big KPF and with Richmonds main forward targets being Riewoldt and Morton - this is a very suitable selection.
4: (Fremantle) Anthony Morabito -
Has just won the WAFL rising star award and is a ready-made big bodied forward or mid. Blitzing pace and a strong mark, the 192cm younsters only downfall is he's kicking.
5: (Kangaroos) Gary Rohan -
NM would highly consider Lucas Martin and Cunnington for this pick but the red-haired youngster may be too hard to resist! Amazing pace and massive X-factor about him, will be a fine edition to the kangas.
6: (Sydney) Kane Lucas -
The WA gun is probably the next best player (just edging martin out) and Sydney would find him very hard to past.
7: (West Coast) Lewis Jetta -
The eagles would be annoyed Lucas was taken, so i can see them making a shock selection and taking 21yo WAFL superstar Lewis Jetta. With Pace to burn, great goal sense and good skills, Jetta will be a fine player and with the big wings at subiaco, he could easily thrive and become a super player.
8: (Port Adelaide) Luke Tapscott -
Probably the best kick in the draft, Tapscott is very good at kicking goals and is a very quality player. Plus being a SA it is an ideal selection for the power.
9: (Hawthorn) Daniel Talia -
A fantastic KPD, which is exactly what the hawks are after. They would be very happy with daniel to strengthen their Backline.
10: (Essendon) Dustin Martin -
The bombers would be absolutely stoked if Martin managed to slip to them! A Fantastic Inside-mid with brillaint kicking skills, lucky to slip this far.
11: (Carlton) Ben Cunnington -
IMO the next best midfielder available, and carlton would be very happy with young ben to add to their talented midfield.
12: (Brisbane) Koby Stevens -
If the young midfielder did slip this far the lions would be crazy not to pick him and continue to expand their skilful young midfield.
13: (Collingwood) Jack Fitzpatrick -
Very nearly went with Vardy but Fitzpatrick imo is better and would suit them more. At 202cm he can play ruck and he often swings between forward and back.
14: (Western Bulldogs) Matthew Panos -
Talented Full-forward, exactly what the dogs need. They would also consider Griffiths but IMO panos will get the nod.
15: (Adelaide) Mitch Duncan -
The WA midfileder would be very good chocie here, could easily turn out to be one of the best players to come out of this draft and would suit adelaides game plan.
16: (Geelong) Nathan Vardy -
With Ottens getting older and mark blake and shane mumford failing to show good signs - they may feel the need to draft the young ruckman. Nearly went with christenson for this pick.
17: (St Kilda) Jordan Gysbergs -
A versatile player and imo is the next available, cant see the saints passing him.
18: (Melbourne) Jake Carslile -
After taking Scully and Trengove with their first 2 picks a kpf is perfect for them, and jake is a fantastic slection for them at this point.
19: (Richmond) Jesse Crichton -
Inside player who gets his hands on the ball alot, pretty good user and richmond would be very happy with him.
20: (Fremantle) Aaron Black -
Tall full-forward seen as being a 'Late Bolter.' Black is very capable of taking good marks and kicking goals and is exactly what dockers need. Suddenly there forward line is starting to look very dangerous.
21: (North Melbourne) Allen Christenson -
Small quick mid with good foot skills, reads the play well and i cant see him slipping any further.
22: (Sydney) Ben Griffiths -
Sydeney would be absolutely delighted if thet nabbed Griffiths! With Barry and O'loughlin gone a new young forward is exactly what there after.
23: (West Coast) Travis Colyer -
Only 175cm tall but has super-human agility, great goal sense and good kicking skills, could go higher and the eagles would be celebrating if they got him, plus he fills the missing link of a small quick crumbing forward.
24: (Port Adelaide) Roland Ah Chee -
Mark Williams loves these flashy players and i reckon he'll find Ah chee much too hard to resist. Roland has great ball use, good goal sense and is probably one of the best youngsters to come out of the NT in a while.
25: (Hawthorn) Brad Sheppard -
A talented rebounding defender with good skills, perfect for the hawks and their hard running game style.
26: (Essendon) Ryan Bastinac -
Probably the next best available. Good skills and no real downers, the bombers would be very happy to add him to their young list.
27: (Carlton) Jake Melksham -
An all-round very good player who could easily go earlier, Carlton would be stoked if they could nab him at this point.
28: (Brisbane) Andrew Moore -
Can play in many positions and is very versatile. Brisbane would be very happy if he lasted to their pick and he would slot nicely onto their list.
29: (Collingwood) Andrew Hooper -
The Larke medalist at the u18's cup, hooper is a very strong player with a good kick and is worth a late 2nd rounder.
30: (Western Bulldogs) Max Gawn -
highly considered Harwood for this pick but its not ver oftenb a 206cm ruckmen comes along and IMO the bulldogs wouldn't mind a young ruckman on their list.
31: (Adelaide) Alex Carey -
A strong in and under clearnce player who adelaide would be very happy to grab at this election. I also considered Harwood and Wanganeen for this pick but Carey imo is just above.
32: (Geelong) Derek Wanganeen -
Yet again Harwood has just been beaten. Wanganeen is only small (172cm) but is quick and can kick goals, i reckon Geelong might be interested in him at this pick.
33: (St Kilda) Nicholas Winmar -
I simply had to make this guy go to the saints for obvious reasons. A strongly built young player who could be a star in a few years, but saints are at the stage where they can take a few risks.
so there it is: my first 2 rounds for the 2009 national draft, hope you enjoyed the read and i should get an updated draft out as the real draft nears.
Would be happy for any1 to point out mistakes or people they would have rather been selected.
cheers
