Fantastic news, indeed. The leader of a strong defence is in the fold for 2004, and right before the New Year as well. A good sign for the continuity of the club in its efforts to go forward from '03. :)

All Australian full back Matthew Scarlett has confirmed his commitment to Geelong by agreeing to a contract extension with the Cats. The signing was announced at the club’s annual general meeting on Wednesday night. As per club policy terms of the agreement were not released.

Scarlett, who claimed his first Carji Greeves Medal as Geelong’s best & fairest in 2003, is widely regarded as the AFL’s premier full-back.

For the third consecutive season Scarlett held his opponents to under two goals per game and he often turned defence into attack with telling delivery and hard running from his post.

“Matthew displays all of the attributes that you want in a player,” Geelong coach Mark Thompson said.

“He is an outstanding player, is highly respected by his teammates and opponents. Matthew shows good leadership and is committed to winning above anything else. He is a key player for us and is a major plank in what we are trying to achieve.”

Scarlett, who has played 91 games for the club his father represented with distinction 183 times, is naturally delighted to have pledged his future to the Cats.

“I have grown up with the club and believe it is time for us to take the next step,” Scarlett said.

“Team success is what we are after and I am excited about the season coming up. We all feel that we are on the brink of an exciting time and I want to be part of that success.”

The 24-year old Scarlett held in check the league’s leading forwards week in week out in 2003. Consider the list of scalps that Scarlett claimed this season and the form of those players before and after they took on the Geelong full back.

Scarlett held Coleman Medalist Matthew Lloyd to one goal in their round 13 battle. Lloyd had booted 16 goals in the three games before facing Scarlett and followed up with eight the week after. Fraser Gehrig was limited to one goal in round 22 after having kicked 18 in the previous four games. 2002 Coleman Medalist David Neitz kicked seven goals in round three and six in round five. Against Scarlett in round four he was limited to just two goals.

I was at the Club's AGM, and as they should be they were rapt with Scarlett's agreement to stay at Catland.
