Just reported on the Today Show that Scarlett has agreed to terms on a new contract that will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2011 season.

Awesome news to wake up to! :thumbsu::D

And that'll see his career out nicely.

Excellent news.

Scarlett a Cat for life after deal
Jake Niall | June 3, 2008

MAKING an exception to the rule of thumb for older players, Geelong is extending the contract of champion defender Matthew Scarlett until the end of 2011.

While the Brisbane Lions have baulked at Jonathan Brown's wish for a five-year deal, the Cats have agreed to terms on a deal that will keep Scarlett playing until beyond his 32nd birthday.

Scarlett, whom industry sources believe is Geelong's highest paid player ahead of Gary Ablett, was already contracted for 2009 when the club agreed to extend his contract by a further two years.

The extension gives Scarlett — who turns 29 this week — three more years after 2008; if this is a rarity for a player of his vintage, the full-back is a player of rare quality and durability.

Geelong's willingness to give him a further three years is not simply a show of faith in Scarlett's ability; there is a benefit for the club, in that his extra tenure is an implicit trade-off for accepting less than market rates later.

The fact that Scarlett will be eligible for veteran status next year, when he turns 30, is another significant factor in the extension; under the rules, only half of his salary will count under the salary cap from next year (and in 2010 and 2011), the same rule already applying to the club's sole listed veteran Darren Milburn.

Sources said the new Scarlett deal had the benefit of easing Geelong's salary cap squeeze and makes it easier to re-sign others, such as Joel Corey, who will be coming out of contract at the end of this season and has agreed to terms on a new three-year deal (2009-2011).

Paul Chapman is the only "name" player at Geelong who remains uncontracted for next year.

Scarlett is one of few key defenders in the game capable of earning the kind of wage — $600,000 plus — normally reserved for the better key forwards and elite midfielders.

Scarlett's excellent record of avoiding injury obviously is paramount in the club's decision to contract him well past his 30th birthday. He played 24 of 25 games in Geelong's premiership, missing once due to illness, and he has not missed a game this year. He was named among Geelong's best in each of its finals victories, finishing third in voting for the Norm Smith Medal.

Scarlett has conceded an average of slightly more than one goal a game this year — his opponent Brendan Fevola booted three on Saturday night — while averaging nearly 16 possessions a game in 2008. He has had more than 20 disposals in four games this season.

scarlo on the veterans list is good for the cap.

It is, but it also makes for an interesting situation with the rookie list.

We'll be down to only have four rookie list spots next year, and i'm sure Shane Mumford will take one of those places, and Laidler might also command a spot.

Might make the decision about Ranga that big tougher.

Kangars and Bedford will get chopped.

and I think Ranga will go straight onto our senior list.

didnt harley say hed just take the rest of the left over salary cap after evryone had resigned?

Yep, which is part of the reason why i found it weird seeing Niall say that Chapman was the only 'name' player left to re-sign.

Either Corey and Harley have re-signed on the sly, or Niall has made a rather large error.

Kangars and Bedford will get chopped.

Bedford, certainly.

Why are you so sure on Kangars? I've not seen nearly enough of him.
Has he been awful? Injured? Just not up to it?

I hope he's good enough for that, because if they judge him only worthy of a rookie list spot, it will be extremely difficult finding spots for all the rookies we want to keep, whilst being able to bring in at least some new blood.

... or Niall doesn't consider Corey or Harley 'name' players. :thumbsd:

Very highly doubt Kangas will be dropped. Has improved a lot since he was drafted. He is a long term prospect and will benefit from another year on the list.

We will de-list bedford.

Retain Kangas Moles and laidler

Promote Mumford. Easy. :thumbsu:

I wish it was that easy.

If we were to promote Mumford and Ranga to the senior list, that's effectively four other senior listed players who need to be delisted (at a minimum) and given we had our big cleanout last year, that'll be difficult.

And we'd also only have one pick in the rookie draft (none if we decided Ranga was only worth a rookie slot).

I just can't see us only bringing in only three players (plus Ranga) through the national draft, rookie draft and pre-season draft.
Something has to give.

Ecstatic. :D:thumbsu:

I follow American sports pretty closely and one aspect of their industry that constantly leaves me feeling short is the genuine lack of loyalty by player to club. Over there it is all a business, but it's certainly something that gives that extra something to our great game especially for fan's following a team and it's players.

Remaining a one- club player adds to your status in my opnion. If you can become a champion over a long period and stay tied to the club that gave you your start, raised and nurtured you through your early years, and gave you every opportunity to develop into a good player, I reckon that is just so indicative of our sport in general as one of loyalty, mateship, persistence and club- driven passion.

Good on you Scarlo, you've said you'll retire at 32, this deal gives you that and it'll be great to see you go out on your own terms. A blue hoop through and through. :thumbsu:

It's going to be tough.

To me Moles & Mumford look like they could be promoted. Ranga will go onto the senior list and we need to draft two others. That means we will be forced to delist 4 players.

I think Tenace, David Johnson & Prismall might all be traded while Hogan & Bedford(R) delisted. I don't think we need any of these guys and we could still get something decent on the trade table for the first three.

That would mean we draft 3 players + Ranga and three rookies.

We can also delist and redraft if needed.
