Rookie Chris Schmidt is out for the season due to a shoulder operation. You'd imagine this all but spells the end to his AFL career. :( But I thought he could have played out the season, maybe all is not lost?

I think those West Australian ABC commenators should take back what they said about him, no wonder why he wasn't moving all that well.

Craigy doesn't seem to think he is gone...

“Chris has played with the shoulder injury for the last month because I actually wanted to see a bit more of him, so he’s done a fantastic job to play,” Craig said on Thursday.

“The decision was, if he could continue to play, the end of May was the time for him to go and have the operation done, so that if things do fall his way he’ll be ready for pre-season which is really important for him.”

That's awful :( As you say though, he was clearly able to play (under duress), so if he was really trying to save his AFL career he'd probably play through it. This sounds more like a Matty Bode off to the surgeon in round 13 type of thing.

If he didn't get another year, especially with this apparently weak draft coming, I'd be quite disappointed.

Edit: Glad to hear that CC. He's done well to play for a month with shoulder problems and still rack up 20+ touches. But why would he handball so much with an injured shoulder? :p Talk about an incentive to kick the ball!!

I think he's definetly worth persisting with. Obviously its a dog of a thing to happen but he's showing enough at SANFL level to warrent another year.

The two thirds draft at the end of the year due to the change in eligibility age will probably save Schmidt from being delisted and give him a 2nd year as a rookie.

There will be players drafted next year who would normally be first round rookie listings, which means the rookie draft depth will be very thin next year.

He's certainly not having any luck with injury. Let's hope that if he does get another year that he gets a chance to really show his wares, because he can play. :thumbsu:

I dare say the club has indicated a desire to keep him on. If not you think he would have pressed on trying to get a spot on the list somewhere for next year.

Yep, i agree with this. That's how i see it as well.

It's what happened to Mathew Bode a few years back. Was struggling with a shoulder injury and was perhaps a 50/50 propisition for delisting and ended up getting surgery mid year after club guaranteed a contract IIRC?

Fair call this!

I think this is another Matthew Bode scenario and considering how piss weak the draft is going to be, one club or another Schmidt would be on senior or rookie list at some club next year. I suspect he stays with us, possibly as a 2nd year rookie.

Something about great minds comes to mind.

Dare i say it – they did the same thing with Luke Jericho a few years back when everyone was certain he was gone.

Hope the lad is retained.

Another example of Craig admitting a player is playing injured - as well as Porps.

Lets hope that there is no lasting damage as a result and that the club will not be open to post career legal action. I give you Mark Johnson at Freo as an example of what can happen ( I acknowledge he is unlikely to win but we have publicy said these guys have played injured).

From Craigy's comments it looks like they wanted the reconstruction done by the end of May so that he would be able to do a full pre-season. (Maybe they learned something from the Porps situation last year?)

Anyway, whilst he wasn't giving any guarantees if they want him fit for the start of pre-season it seems to bode well for his retention for another year on the rookie list.

I also can't imagine we would be able to do better with our last pick in the rookie draft this year.

Playing on with the injury might well have told the list management committee something about his character and determination as well.

Good luck to the young man!

PS: I understand that he had shoulder problems at Brisbane as well. He needs some additional upper body strength and this unfortunately will put another big hold on the weights program I would guess.

I highly doubt they learned anything new at all. This would already have been well known to them, the difference being that Porplyzia was a required player who was willing to go on, whereas Schmidt is just on the rookie list.

Horses for courses.

He shouldn't have played state footy if his shoulder was busted.

This was my thinking as well. Surely the Crows couldve stepped in and said "nah look he isnt right we dont want him to play"

Why would this spell the end to his career?
It's his first year on the Rookie list, so he can and should be still there next year.
He's too good a player from what I've seen to be delisted after 1 year.

Clubs are under no obligation to retain rookies for a second year. It's been very rare indeed for Adelaide to retain rookies for a 2nd year - most are either promoted or delisted after one year on the list.

Agreed. All indications from the club are that he will be retained for 2010. Given that he's been our best SANFL performer all year (at the very least our most consistent performer) his retention is more than justified.
