Watching this Geelong game and it's positively embarrassing how awful our midfield structures are.
As a reminder, Campo was the head coach when he dropped Lever and brought back Mackay for the 2015 finals series purely because of "experience" reasons. Absolutely clueless. And then when we get pumped he can't make the hard calls to drop his 'mates' for their disgraceful efforts.
He's been here since Neil Craig. How many coaches have we rotated through while keeping this guy? And that entire time we've been completely unable to win pressure matches and tough finals.
Has to go. He's finished at the club. Won't win a flag with him controlling our midfield design.
- Jacobs getting decent taps, but our mids run under the ball and away from the tap zone. Consequently we don't get clearances.
- Defensive midfield structures are non-existent. So when the pressure is on, the other team finds it easy to waltz out of stoppages because we don't set up defensively, ever.
- We still hack kick out of clearances rather than working it around the stoppages like other teams. These kicks are cut off by a defensive sweeper on the 50 line about 98% of the time.
- Players don't run defensively and they never had. Even when we had a gun midfield unit of Sloane, Dangerfield and Thmmo. Pure attack which never stands up in pressure games.
- On top of the above point, teams tend to find it ludicrously easy to get the ball out of our forward line because our midfielders are caught in no mans land when they handball it out of defense. On the flip side, our structures deny us easy ball out of the opposition's defense.
- No tagging when it's plainly obvious who needs to be tagged and when tagging works. Today, for example, Selwood needed to be tagged from the opening bounce to the final siren. Didn't bother.
- When Sloane gets tagged, we have no answer. We don't get Sloane to work off another player, and we don't get out other midfielders to support
- We have taught the mongrel out of our players. M. Crouch was a tough unit when he came to the club. Now he's soft.
- Tackling ability is non-existent. We don't tackle well and we never have.
- We don't play to the times. Umpires are letting people get away with drawing high frees and dropping the ball. We should be dropping the ball the moment we are about to be tackled, but we don't.
- Our players have zero desire to win the football when it's tough and that is absolutely a coaching issue. We need to be coached to be tough at the ball.
