I must say if he wants to be captain he can't be crumbling when his side needs him the most.
myman, that post was brilliant. Thankyou.
Scotty T. forever!

They say stats can be twisted to work in anyone's favour and with that post I am very suspicious; Nathan Lonie wtf???

Thompson always stands up when the side needs him the most.
I mean look at his games from Rounds 20-22 when we couldn't lose a game. Was BOG against Collingwood for crying out loud. Thompson is a big game player and that's one of the best things about him, is that you can count on him when it matters.
Can't believe that comment.
This is what really annoys me. You bag Thompson for his kick and yes he shouldn’t have kicked it on the full, but without him against the Hawks we wouldn’t have even stood a chance to win the game. His stats for the match:
• 34 possessions- led team
• 5 inside 50’s- led team
• 7 clearances- led team
People see him make a clanger and think to themselves he must go and we would be better off without him. Without Thompson we would be losing a heck of a lot more than just the odd clanger. It’s a shame some people can’t seem to notice this.
How comforting!

You left out the little fact about the 8 clangers he made!![]()
nice post mymansyd - certainly adds some perspective.
I have been one of those who were bitterly bitterly dissapointed with Scotty's performance against the Hawks. 10 clangers from 34 possessions.
but there's no question this year has been a good year and he is starting to play somewhere near the level of consistency we hoped he would.
With Goody and Edwards winding down their careers over the next few years - it will be up to Thommo to bring the next batch through with him.
Thoughts of trading him are ridiculous - no wonder we are mocked in the media....![]()
Thompson, Reilly and Van Berlo are going to be the key midfeilders going forward, but after that it looks very thin. Midfeild development will be important over the next two years.

Excuse my typo...
Lance Franklin (Jaw) 31%![]()

I don't know what planet you are on, but definitely NOT FOR TRADE.Ok, so I know I'm in the minority, but I think he is tradeable. He is a good player, but he is also a stupid player. The worst thing about the errors he makes is that he doesn't learn.
The OOF against Hawthorn was a shocker, but really came as no surprise. When I saw him mark it I closed my eyes. You see it was in a game a couple of weeks before that he had almost the same situation. Game on the line, mark from kick out on boundary line. That day he waited until the ump called play on, stood motionless until the players on the mark came at him, and then handballed at the feet of someone running past with three players on him. He barely even made contact with the ball! The team (Geelong I think) picked it up and run forward to kick the game sealer.
That's two clangers that cost games from the same situation. Not exactly encouraging for the future.
Hoving said this however, I wouldn't trade him for a 2nd round pick! I would be willing to part with him if it gave us something significant in return.![]()
Being soft as shite doesn't count towards the clanger count.
Lonie has very good disposal. He wouldn't be on an AFL list if his kicking wasn't elite. Being just about the defintion of "reciever", he gets a heck of a lot of his touches out in space, under little pressure, so he's far less likely to give away free kicks or rush his kicks/handpasses.
I'm not at all surprised to hear he has a low clanger rate.

so you think he should be traded ?

I'd like to know what they classify as a clanger then... because there are two players on our list that make countless clangers every game and are not in our worst 5!!!!![]()
There's nothing like facts. Thanks Dyertribe.
Let's focus on this one...
2nd in Errors per Game
This is true, but I think it is more important to focus on 'clanger rates' rather than total clangers. For example, if Player A has 5 clangers during a game from 20 possessions, then his clanger rate is 25%, if Player B has 5 clangers during a game from 10 possessions, then his clanger rate is 50%.
To give strength to this argument, here is a list of players who - like Scotty - previously had the second-most clangers count in a season-:
2006 - Daniel Kerr
2005 - Luke Hodge
2004 - Barry Hall
2003 - Luke Darcy
2002 - Simon Black
2001 - Adem Yze
2000 - Scott West
1999 - Shane Crawford
1998 - Chris Scott
I would have thought these were all pretty fair players, and only due to sheer weight of possessions was their clanger count so high, a la Scott Thompson this year.
So then, here is a list of the top 10 best and worst clanger rates for 2007 for both Adelaide and the AFL. I've restricted players to only those that played a minimum of 11 games (half the season).
2007 AFL Worst Clanger Rates
Daniel Motlop (Port) 35%
Lance Franklin (Jaw) 31%
Brendan Fevola (Carl) 29%
Simon Taylor (Haw) 29%
Anthony Rocca (Coll) 29%
Simon Prestigiacomo (Coll) 29%
Chris Bryan (Coll) 27%
Setanta o'hailpin (Carl) 27%
Paul Medhurst (Coll) 27%

Ben Hudson 19%
Ian Perrie 18%

A clanger should not be confused with an ineffective disposal. Clangers are direct turnovers. Ineffective kicks may result in a turnover, but are not necessarily clangers. Usually an ineffective kick (or handball) may hit the ground and bounce over a team mates head, or something like that. They are a lot more common than clanger kicks (or handballs).
I am sick of writing about the Orient, Occident, Said, Qutb, bin Laden and Islamist terrorism as a form of praxis related to Postcolonialism, so I will fritter away more valuable time prior to tomorrow's deadline here. Ah sweet catharsis...
