Its been reported that Scott Welsh kicked 9 goals for the eagles reserves against norwood last night. Great to see Scotty back and hopefully now he is close to playing for the crows again.

Good signs from Scotty, even if it is a lower standard game.

Hopefully he can now strings some games together & return well before the business end of the season. His return may be the key to giving Roo a much needed rest.

Do we want him back?

He has never been a consistent performer and has struggled with confidence, self esteem and depression. The loss of his brother has weighed heavily on him (as it would) and he has always had doubts about whether he is good enough to play at AFL level.

Craig described him, along with Burton and Perrie, as a high maintenance player in that the coaching staff have to work hard to maintain his confidence. I don't think you can have too many of those sort of players because they let you down when it counts.

I think we're better off without him.

I think sometimes with a long term injury like Scotty has had, the way he plays the second week back is almost more important than the first week. Hopefully he pulls up nicely and can put some form together. I'm still of the belief that he could be a very, very important player come September.

My concern is that he may have lost some of his pace with these injuries.

Without his pace, Welshie can't offer much to the side - his strength is his pace off the mark, allowing him to burn off his defender.

When he came back from injury during the finals a few years back, it was painful to watch, he was slow and couldn't chase down a defender to save himself.

If he's going to win a place back we need to be sure he's fit, on pace and doesn't fall into bad habits of not chasing his opponent.

I don't think I can take much more of the "Will he make our lineup?" and "Will he be delisted?" rubbish that is coming thick and fast.

He is our No.1 forward, whether people like it or not. :)

Shocking post. I feel embarrassed for you.

With Roo not looking 100% I doubt he will go into the midfield this year so I think with Roo up forward, a 3/4 fit Welsh will struggle to get a game.

I said this awhile back,Welsh for ages now always took the number 1 defender and after all he is just an exceptional flanker/pocket player.
With the emergence of Hentschell and the dangerous Ricciuto that aint gonna happen much.
I expect him if fit and confident to become quite deadly and possibly game breaking.

VERY VERY valid point. Generally players come out and play a blinder after a long term injury lay-off but then play a stinker the following week.

Coming off severe case of OP and coming off shinsplints and sore calf is hardly the same thing.

He'll need some time to work his way back. He'll probably need 1 month in the SANFL. Expect him to come back late in the season and be ready for the finals good timing:thumbsu:

How late is late? If Bock, Welsh, Pez, Huddo,VB and Hart aren't back in the side by round 18 I doubt they will play this year.

And you would be right. I would be very surprised if all of those boys play for the rest of the year unless some of our current 22 cop injuries, and going by the trend so far this year, there is afair chance fo that happening.

All things being equal, I don't think we will see more than 2-3 back. Craig will not unsettle a winning side and he will not drop performing players.

Agreed. By round 18 we will be thinking finals(well we aren't there yet but we are pretty much certain to make the finals). We don't need any passengers or people who are getting back to AFL standard. It will be interesting what Craig does.

4 weeks? Ample time IMO.

If Craig believes a player is required for his team he will bring him in ....he did that last year with Johncock palying his when he was still very underdone.

Welsh, Perrie and Hart IMO Craig will want back.....VB is going to be tough after a collarbone and with his body and probable succeptability to have it re-broken I doubt we would see him again this year.

Bock hasn't enough training or footy to play this year, Huddo no chance.

BUT it all depends on injuries in the second half of the season as well.

Number 1?

I doubt it anymore.

He had a role , and he may well do in the future. At this point he needs to get himself right. I think Hentschell and McGregor are number 1...which is a worry in itself

Are you aware what shinsplints do to you?

I've had them, and they're mind-numbingly painful and you always run the risk of them occurring again. If he still suffers any pain from them, it would not surprise me at all if he'd lost some pace.

Note that both shinsplints and a calf injury are leg injuries...funnily enough, the things you use to run with. Maybe that's telling you something?

Anyway, did you actually want to comment on my post?

How was that a shocking post?

The sort of player I trust least is one who struggles all day then bobs up with a few goals in the last quarter when the game is gone. Why couldn't they do it when it counted? These sort of players might have the ability but don't perform at their best until the pressure is off.

Look at the England cricket team. For years they invested in players that performed well against Australia in dead rubber tests and second innings when the game was as good as lost - Caddick, Butcher, Gough, Stewart, Hick etc. Good performances when it didn't matter ("look what they're capable of") blinded the selectors to the reality of their ability. They lost 8 Ashes series in a row because of it.

You must be a Welsh hater as IMO you do not have a balance opinion on him.

Seriously, go back & have a look at last year when he scored his goals - they were not all in the last quarter! He kicked some crucial goals when we need him to. Also, the pressure he puts on the opposition is enormous.

You really need to get a clue, as making posts like you have do your credibility no favours what's so ever.

Back to who will return. Huddo is a very small chance. Bock I'm really not sure of given his stress fractures, but would be doubtful. Perrie, Welsh, Hart & VB will be all reasonable chances - but probably not all of them & will depend on how they return through the SANFL/match fitness. What it will give us though is more depth come finals, which may well be needed.
