The 27th season of the Sweet FA gets underway on Sunday afternoon, after a lengthy off-season that saw the mighty South Australians lift the State of Origin title. The Mount Buller Demons will look to defend their flag, new signings will look to impress, and we can all look forward to some cracking Round 1 fixtures.
The Hawks and the Dragons is a fixture that rarely fails to impress, with little love lost between these sides. The Hawks have a new logo and new leadership, with the mantle well and truly passed to Agent93 and The Half Back, whilst the Dragons were the whipping boys of Season 26 and the off-season, and their new captain PhenomenalV1 has undoubtedly the hardest job in the league this season.
SIGNINGS
The Hawks came out of the off-season without too much damage despite losing The Filth Wizard and Noobz0r to the Royals as well as boncer34 to the Bombers. NaturalDisaster comes across after 3 seasons as Furies captain and is one of the most involved posters in the league, and they'll hope SM can get back to his best at greener pastures following his departure from the Gumbies. ArdentEagle looks like a good prospect as their sole rookie as well.
Meanwhile the Dragons were absolutely ****ed over during the off-season, primarily by the Bombers, and have a devastating list of outs. WFL and VSTone, two of their most active and experienced posters, left first and were eventually followed by WaynesWorld19 - with those 3 constituting 75% of the entire Dragons post numbers in Season 26. They were also negatively impacted by the retirement of CinnaMay, and the near-retirement but eventual defection of xenxen to the Bears. They have just one experienced poster coming in with gym4life arriving from the Bears and like many other young captains, PhenomenalV1 will be relying on a glut of rookies to help restore the club: AceAndy, Andrew Birch, Bluella, Cold Sober, PeanutButter Pies and SaltPeter.
KEY PLAYERS
Expect The Half Back, Agent93 and The Jesus to reprise their roles as half back, ruck rover and ruckman at the Hawks but the other positions could see some change. NaturalDisaster and Loonerty, both full backs in Season 26, will be expected to move to greener pastures and Golumless' form as leading goalkicker in the State of Origin tournament is rumoured to have landed him the role at club level. Expect the usual from spookism and por_please_ya.
The Dragons' line-up in Round 1 will be very interesting considering their player movements over the off-season, and especially if PhenomenalV1 retains the full forward role. The likes of Blaze Storm, Hatchy1992 and Pie 4 Life should step into leading roles, whilst gym4life will almost certainly have requested a good position after moving across. If some of the rookies can impress as well, you can expect them to become key players.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
Season 26, Round 10: East Side Hawks 16.7 (103) defeated Dragons FFC 12.6 (78) at Waverley Park
The Hawks won the latest clash between these 2 sides, kicking 11 goals to 4 in the second half to run away 25 point winners in spookism's 200th career game. Agent93 and The Half Back both had incredible performances, with the ruck rover managing 33 disposals and 11 tackles whilst THB had 29 disposals and 10 marks from half back, a game that went a long way to securing the TFLUA-Tiger Medal. For the Dragons, Pie 4 Life and Blaze Storm were servicable with the goals coming from PhenomenalV1, mistylake and Pea Nut.
PREDICTION
Hawks by 56 points.
