This thread is about selecting a combined team made up of Australian & English cricket players that have fought for the Ashes over a long period of time.

My team:

Sir Jack Hobbs (E)
Bill Ponsford (A)
Sir Donald Bradman (A-CAPT)
Allan Border (A)
Greg Chappell (A)
Sir Ian Botham (E)
Adam Gilchrist (A)
Shane Warne (A)
John Snow (E)
Dennis Lillee (A)
Glenn McGrath (A)
12th: Peter May (E)

I can only go on the players I have seen.

Greenidge
Ponting
Tendulkar
Lara
Border

Great players but I can't recall them playing any Ashes tests.

Based on Ashes-only performances

1. Hobbs
2. Sutcliffe
3. Hmmmm - let me think............
4. Border
5. Macartney
6. Gilchrist
7. Botham
8. Warne
9. Lillee
10. Larwood
11. Laker

12th Man: Either Syd Copley, Peter Cantrell or Gary Pratt

Larwood instead of Tyson is the correct call. Like Spikey, I would have Miller instead of Botham, which means you can have Gilchrist at 7 (although I would perhaps have Marsh instead of Gilchrist purely based on his superior wicket-keeping). Also I would have either Hutton or Hammond instead of Macartney.

D'oh!:o

Hayden (50+)
Langer (45.3)
Ponting (50+)
G.Chapell (50+)
Border (50+)
Waugh (50+)
Gilchrist (47.6) (Knott on pure keeping ability)
Botham (33.54)
Warne
Lillee
McGrath

Walters

Terry Alderman anyone?

He probably has a good case, took 42 wickets on the 1981 Ashes tour and 41 wickets on the 1989 tour. If he didn't miss so much cricket with injury and his ban for the rebel South Africa tour, he would probably be a certainty.

Based on Ashers performances only - below would be my list. Of course stats are all we can use - and we know how bad that is across generations

Ponsford
Hobbs
Bradman
H Sutcliffe
S Waugh
Gilchrist
K Miller
Warne
D Lillee
S Barnes
Spofforth
12th Man - L Hutton

I'd have to look at the stats to do a proper team, but based on some head knowledge you'd have to consider the following names:

1. ---------
2. ---------
3. Bradman (duh!)
4.
5. S.Waugh (he absolutely ripped England in 1989, Ashes batting averages in a number of series are outstanding)
6. I. Botham (killed us in 1981 with his all round ability)
7. ---------
8. S. Warne (regularly took more than 30 wickets a series, almost won 2005 for us single handed)
9. ---------
10. --------
11. Terry Alderman (in England he would definetely play. Took 40+ wickets twice in series in England)

Based on Ashes performances

Australia

Barnes
Morris
Bradman
M Waugh
Border
S Waugh
Miller
Marsh/Healy/Gilchrist
Warne
Lillee
