Selwood game time stat...scary

One of the biggest risks for the GFC's future is that the recruiting officers at some of the other clubs were right and Selwood's knee only has 5 years of footy in it. I desperately hope not but we won't know for another 3 years.

Start praying to the knee gods.

How could they possibly tell that an 18 year olds ( he was when they supposedly made the call) knee has 5 years of afl left in it?

hmmm... controversial.

i would take hodge for pris.

oh, we don't have the messiah no more.

2009 will be the year Hodge (who is a good player btw) will be made accountable in the back half...when he was made accountable in the MF he failed.
Great coaching move by Clarkson but there is NO WAY Hodge will be left free to roam a backline week in week out cherry picking. My suspicion in the GF is that due to injury we were robbing Peter to pay Paul in terms of having no one fit enough to stay on him which allowed him to dominate down back, particularly after Harls went down.
Clarkson's plan is to play most of his team back...gut run on the rebound and get into space or one on one contests close to their offensive goal where most of his talent is.
It'll get worked out and then a bunch of very mediocre Hawthorn players will be found out. Hell we pretty much worked it both times we played them except for our inability to kick goals with a dominant forward. That is our task for 2009.
Remember how Chapman was carving them up in Rd 17 before he got injured?
You just need one of yourr forwards to dominate and the whole plan falls apart. Make the ****ers accountable!

Would you make him accountable by playing a defensive style forward on him to make him earn his kicks? Or possibly play a very tall forward line say Mooney, and the two Toms with big brad rotating through to force to have to man up on a big man in the forward line?

All of the above..we tried to do it in the GF but didn't have anyone fit enough or good enough to do the job.
That's the way to dismantle their plan...a KF who even LOOKS threatening..
Hawkins and Gamble were designed to beat Hawthorn. What about putting a fit Chappy on him? Now THAT would be interesting and out of left field!!

I would love see that!

Cant wait tos see Hawkins and Gamble playing in the seniors more often to.

"(The next step is) Probably more time in the midfield, more game time. ... we've probably brought him from 64 or 65 per cent of games and get him around 85 or 86 (per cent of game time) this year, which will mean he's got more influence on it."

This from Brendan McCartney...

Can you give us a link witsend?

I may be wrong but wasn't Rooke on Hodge for a short period of time? I remember thinking we should have kept him there, as he seemed to do a decent job of negating his influence.

He was, for a while. Don't know why he wasn't kept on him for longer.

2 interesting points...this kid got 19 (tx Chuck ;) ) Brownlow votes playing just 65% of the game..what's he gonna do this year if uninjured??!!

If he is getting that kind of MF time, who eases back? Ablett, Bartel, Corey or a little bit from each?
One advantage I can see is the opportunity for those players to spend time pinch hitting forward for small bursts when off the ball rather than going to the bench. Naturally they have to be rested but a few minutes here and there from Ablett and Bartel could cause a LOT of headaches for opposition defences.
Can you imagine them in the goal square 1 out? The backlines would shit themselves! And it would unbalance them.

The Herald Sun says Selwood had 78% gametime this year. Still a fair bit below your Bartel's, Ablett's, Ling's and Corey's mind you, so the improvement is there.

Could McCarteney be talking about 65% of midfield time? I'll sneak in a bit of DT question here (sorry):p Is Jimmy likely to continue his awesome numbers or could Selwood effect him. Also, at the start of the season I got the feeling he (Bartel) was sacrificing his own game to block for Ablett.

Cheers.

Bartel didn't play that much in the centre square in 08 compared to 07.
There were rumours for most of the season that he was playing with sore ribs/back/hip etc but Jimmy doesn't miss games.

why was he not picked up till number 7 in the draft?

Concerns regarding possible long term problems with one of his knees. He sustained cartilage damage and had subsequent surgery to repair it resulting in him missing his entire U18 year. Was touted as a top 3 pick early on in the piece prior to injury though.

Is it true that he's put on a lot of weight in the pre-season? And if so, is it muscle or fat? I heard on SEN that he's stacked on some pounds. Photos would be appreciated if available.

I come in peace ;)

He has most certainly put on some weight over the pre season and its all muscle. I saw him up close in the pier to pub swim. His arms a clearly bigger and more toned. Should be on track for another superb year.
