Ben Johnson who also arrived at the club in 2000 has played 136 games.

No, no he is not. A dead-man walking as it is. Been giving a fair go and needs to repay the faith shown by Mick. If he doesn't step up Malthouse has no choice in his role - but to delist him - otherwise we will be going backwards.

I really have no faith though that MM will seek a trade if Richards/Bryan don't pan out. We've left it this bloody long, getting smashed in the ruck, why should season 2008 be any different?

Well, as horrendous as the trade turned out, he DID trade for Steve McKee...

Maybe he's just gunshy trading for ruckmen after that.

However, picking up Bryan does show that he recognises that we need backups, so if we end up cutting Richards loose, he will probably pick up another ruckman.

It depends what you mean by "coming on". I don't think he needs to have a fantastic year. He just needs to have a solid year where he at least establishes himself as a decent back up to Fraser or Bryan (depending on where we play Josh this year).

what i mean by that we need a walk up start ruckman ready to play not a kid out of the draft because he won't be ready.if we cannot get a ready to go ruckman, and draft a youngster instead ,then he is safe

i have heard matthews in an interview and when asked about his list management he said among other things that they always draft a ruckman each year and keep them on the list, because they are slow developers and they become good trade bait. mark williams does the same

He has this year to step up,if he doesnt after the no of years and chances he has had he will be delisted.Cant see why it is so likely another club will pick him up. Failed ruckmen who have been given years of chances dont usually change their spots.

If Ben Reid could grow another 5 or so centimetres, it would be fantastic for his prospects in playing ruck, and hence fantastic for the Pies. Still, two inches, in two or so years is quite a bit to ask.

Ben Kinnear did play a well deserved 3 Brownlow vote game but thats about it. Guy Richards has so much more potential than Kinnear. Richards has had shocking luck with injury and is a skinny ruckman on a list with little ruck depth. All those mean he needs more time and unlike Kinnear actually still should be on the list.
