Looked very good in defence today...lets hope Pagan keeps him in the side for the rest of the year . he needs more gametime at this level to polish up his skills and adjust to the pace of the game . :thumbsu:

Needs to spend a lot of time working on skills.
His kicking is not upto AFL standard, and decision making is average.

Not sure if him staying in the seniors is the best option when we can instead try a youngster that may adapt more quickly

can't agree with this. Setanta has displayed reasonable and at time excellent (not to mention creative) disposal. He is a unique player with the potential to be a superstar/freak in the future.

I know today he made a few mistakes, nothing however that cant be rectified with some more experience.Personally I loved his game today.Showed pace, courage, strong marking and a determination that has been lacking a bit in our club.I reckon he was hitting his targets as well

His kicking is quite good by Carlton standards. I agree his decision making is sometimes a little bit of a concern, but he has improved in every game he has played this year. His one grabbing of the ball from the ground and a couple of the contested marks he took today show that his skills are, for the most part as good as many of the young players on our list.

Who are those youngsters who you think deserve a game ahead of him? Hartlett and Bower are just back from injury, Edwards is not ready, nor is Raso and of course Jackson and Flint have still not totally proven themselves yet. I don't think there is any other youngsters available or ready and Setanta is only 23 and in his 3rd season of football. Compare what he showed today to what we have seen from Lappin, Sporn and Teague this year. I think Setanta is showing much more.

Best game he has ever played in AFL today... made a couple of mistakes, but so did everyone else, and he bounced back wonderfully well.

Imagine if he kick that goal in the last qtr.

Pagan praised him in the after match speech according to Fev, so I suspect he will be playing for the first of the year.

Well done to Setanta on a pretty good game... he took a step fwd today, he wanted the ball, make a few mistakes, but bounced back.

Had a horror 5-10 minute patch, but apart from that, was very pleased and impressed with his game today. Runs with the ball, and is very good around the ground. His kicking doesn't look fluent but it hits the target most of the time. Had a very good game and with more excperience at AFL level he will only improve. The Irish experiment is finally paying off.

Not trying to troll just an honest assesment on him. He was pretty awful today just doesnt know where to kick the ball once hes taken a mark and his skills are terible along with Bradley imo they were the worst on the ground. Both made so many mistakes. He does have one thing going for him though he can take a mark and if he can get his kicking and decision making right he could be a good player. Has plenty of upside so is worth fast tracking his developement in the AFL.

He has taken huge steps in the last 2 weeks, reminds me a bit of Roberts-thomson from sydney, his kicking skills do let him down at time but the guy defenitly wants to play and is trying hard every week. The more he plays the better he will get, remember the guy only started 3 years ago, there where guys playing today who have been playing for 20 years and played worse than him.

I'd take him before Solomon or Bradley anyday

I agree. Somethings he does are really very good, however he's still making some basic mistakes owing to his lack of development and inexperience. He does however, know how to get the ball, and is a gifted athlete which is a huge advantage. Not many 6'7" players out there with his speed and leap. Not too fussed with his mistakes, because he has massive potential, and is a naturally creative/attacking player. At this point, his seniors experience is really accelerating his development. :)

What's Tony Shaw's problem with the kid?

Thought he made a couple of mistakes (who didn't), but the little man with a big mouth couldn't shut up about it. Did Setanta screw his missus or something?

Thought Setanta showed quite a bit today. Sure, he went through quite a rough stage, but was generally able to bounce back. His disposal was very poor, but that is to be expected and hopefully can be rectified soon. I would suggest he undergo some intensive skills training during the off-season. Hopefully he will learn from his mistakes and move on. He should definitely be kept in the senior side for the rest of the year, as he was one of our better players.

I look forward to see his continuous development into hopefully a long term player for Carlton. :thumbsu:

Tony Shaw should never be allowed near a microphone ..the blokes a complete moron who talks absolute crap ....he carried on about Thornton claiming he touched the ball before it went through the goals ..and then when replays showed the ball was obviously touched ...his response was ..."well you can't expect a goal umpire to see that "

Hang on. Sorry. It was still negative.
sentanta is going to be a very good player you can just tell he had a rough patch today were i think he had a few clangers then kicked it into the man on the mark but apart from that done very good , what i like about him he has good closing speed and can catch up to the man on the lead ! a very good tackler aswell

On Triple M I've never heard a commentory box more obessessed with being negative of a six gamers efforts in my life. Especially in a game where the match report has him in the best. So Tony wasn't alone.

I noticed. in Setanta's 3rd game some "journalist' in the The Australian devoted an entire paragraph in his match report to bagging Setanta. It seems the anti-Carlton sentiment isn't restricted to BF and it's mods. I think Setanta will be a great player for the Blues. I'm really not too fussed by the mistakes he's making at present, because he's having a red-hot go, and has the potential to do freakish things. He's a sensational mark already, and as some have noted, his skills in close are actually very good. Decision making is still lacking, but will improve with time. His big asset is his athleticism - can't think of any 6'6"-6'7' players out their with his agility. It's a good idea to keep him in one position at the moment, while he's learning. But latter on, Denis will move him up forward. With his size and pace on the lead, he'll be very hard to stop. :)

I think he has shown a lot of improvement this year. Has speed and is very athletic and is going to be a good player for us. If only he had have kicked a point and not out on the full  but overall I thought he played OK yesterday.

This guy is really coming on.

Takes a terrific pack mark,
something he really has worked on,
and is not afraid to back into oncoming players to defend,
good with the ball around his feet,
and can outrun midfielders when he has the pill.

Sure he makes mistakes, but that is inexperience,
doesn't go into his shell when stuffs up.

Think it is great for his development that he is down back facing the play,
and being led to the ball. Having said that, if can nail CHB, and Lance goes forward, we can straighten up a bit.

With that facial growth and his exuberance,
just for a split second i thought it was the original 17,
Tiger Croswell.

If he can be half as good as Brent I will be more than happy. The no.17 guernsey hasn't seen much talent since Crosswell, so here is hoping Setanta can do it proud.
