It’s certainly an issue is that area as it is in many.

Every year there are senior clubs going under in Vic and this year has been an acute case, feels like 5-10 have gone out of business.

The problem in every case has been playing numbers.

One thing I am noticing is I think we are seeing the rise of really big clubs (in metro areas anyway) which surely must be having an impact on other clubs ability to get significant playing numbers.

It is hard in footy, in basketball or cricket you can basically have a club with five or ten blokes and a few fill ins.

You need a minimum of 50 players for a senior footy club which puts the pressure on smaller clubs.

It’s not just footy or sport, in all walks and businesses, it often seems that the big get bigger and the small get squeezed and pushed out. People want to get involved and be associated with the big successful clubs and numbers breed more numbers.

The big VAFA clubs, I mean some have seniors, reserves, 2x thirds, 2x Under 23s, 2x U19s… up to eight men’s teams. It must impact other clubs.

Those clubs would make a great comp geographically
Geographically for sure. Competitively it would be a disaster. Hate to say it but A grade VAFA teams Old Brighton and Old Melburnians would deliver some frightful hidings to the likes of Black Rock, Elsternwick and Hampton Hammers. I’m all for a geographically based comp but it needs to have multi divisions and competitive results.

Mt Eliza knocked off Bentleigh by 40 odd points
Unsure on the strengths of the teams but not a terrible result considering the quality of the MPNFL

Ground not safe to play on
Cricket pitch area not ready
Embarrassing for Bayside council
All junior games on Sunday also have to be cancelled
Bayside also in charge of Elsternwick Park , this is what happens when you privatise . They knew when cricket would finish .

Chelsea Heights with 1 team played Ormond 3rds at Peninsula , pulled away at the end to win by about 4 goals
Bit confused. Could CH not find enough players for 2 teams or was that the plan all along? And why Ormond's 3rd team? Where your 1s and 2s booked to play someone else?

CH could only get 1 team , so Ormond played a mixture of 3rds and 19's as had quite a few out and the seniors played Peninsula , both games were at Peninsula Grammar

Thanks for the response. Don't know the circumstances and perhaps there was a wedding or other reason but not great for CH to be battling for numbers a few weeks out from Rd 1. Probably a concern for the league also to have a Div. 1 side in this position. Lots of clubs in very close proximity scraping over players.

Again I don’t know the strength of what they put out on the weekend but if what you say is correct (and I have no reason to doubt it), for CH to just get over a mid-table (based on last year) C grade ammo club’s 3rds is perhaps of bigger concern. How will they fare against Chet, Cranny etc?

Chelt knocked off St Bedes from B Grade Ammos on the weekend also.
