SFNL Division 1 2024 discussion

Looks like Cheltenham, St Paul’s and Dingley you could say would be a lock for finals….almost Port Colts but have worries about their fitness / leg speed on the bigger grounds.
Springy and Peninsula All Stars to battle for last spot in the finals. Yep, Cranny are done…will finish probably 7th - 9th with a battle between Bentleigh and Chelsea.
Mordy would be lucky to win a game in D2.
Anyone hear the news Narre Warren will come across next year? If so how will D1 look?

Yes my m8 is friends with several people who are heavily involved with Narre and they said they are definitely coming into sfnl

Surely if Narre come across they go straight into D1 then?
So what does that mean?
2 down and 1 up with current D1 or just 1 down and no one promoted from D2.

I’ve never not said anything about Footy Bayside I like the concept but can’t see it ever getting off the ground.
What will it take for the league to get off the ground?
Will the Ammo teams ‘break tradition’ and make the move across?
Who will oversee the league?
So many anomalies and big changes required…..probably too hard basket!

In the meantime SFNL will gather more sides out in the outer South East…..maybe the league should change their name to South East FNL to further reflect the growth corridor of teams they are absorbing out that way?

Narre will go straight into Div 1 and it will be a 2 down and 1 up . Promotion from Div 2 plus Narre in.

Gee you really can’t let it go about sides from south east playing in this comp mpnl and eastern fl all travel roughly same distance as most of the southern clubs and they are very strong comps if you want them out half the Div 1and 2 would be gone if Sfnl want a good strong comp why not bring them in great grounds and facilities and that attracts more people the only way it could happen is these ammo clubs grow some balls and get out of the vafa and try something new

Always been a scuffle between the Vamps and Dingoes. As long as I can remember.
Great to see that rivalry back, hopefully continues for many more years.

I think the trajectory of your own club is clouding your views Bedford. School and uni based teams have made up the majority of A grade for decades so it’s hardly new. For most local footy watchers we are happy for our club to find their level, be competitive on the field and viable off it. Neither comp (VAFA or SFL) is perfect but both have point of difference. The travel in the VAFA can be tiresome but for some the competitive balance it provides offsets that to some degree. Not having to engage in bidding wars for over paid hacks is another advantage but losing players every year to paying comps is a constant frustration. No question the SFL is a much better comp then it was a decade ago, both in quality and administration. Narre will be good for the comp but (in my opinion) bigger is not always better and at some point, the SFL risks losing it biggest point of difference if it keeps expanding its geographical footprint. There are rumours that Spotswood are sniffing around, and it already covers from Port Melbourne to Mount Martha. It is now picking up clubs in the Casey LGA and with the shambolic state of the OEFL, others may jump ship. The SFL does not want to become the dumping ground for those disenchanted with their current competition to the detriment of the current clubs.

We could always have a Southern league and a South East league ... unfortunately, we have been down that path before. I thought the SWGFL worked well but then seemed to lose its way when it came under the MPNFL structure in the mid 1990s. When it broke away and became the SEFNL, some clubs were desperate to get out for a number of reasons and transferred to the SFNL.

The best option I see is a Nepean league for the southern peninsula clubs and then a multi-division Mornington Peninsula league for the northern peninsula clubs and the clubs in the old SEFNL catchment area. This would allow clubs to find their level much better than in a one-division South East comp, which was why it broke up in the first place. Unfortunately, the peninsula clubs aren't in for that, especially the unambitious southern peninsula clubs, because they don't seem to like change.
