Any one know why Byrnes is out? I get the sense he isn't appreciated as he should be, unless he's just had more injury's than I'm aware of..?

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

I recon he just needs more games in him, up & running he's one of our best small forwards imo.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

Would be appreciated more if he was doing more. Being dropped while Varcoe and Wojak are not back would suggest he is some strife I am afraid. The youngsters are/have overtaken him.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

Just hasn't found form yet after all his soft tissue injuries last year.

Working hard but fumbling everything.

At his best he hits the ball at speed and hits the scoreboard but it ain't happening at the minute.

At the moment doesn't merit a gig in the 22 on form, needs at least a month in the vfl to find it, then we'll see.

It will be tough for him to get his spot back, but if he can find form again there's a chance. The emergence of Motlop may well mean there is no spot for him regardless (assuming Trav is fit and back in the team later in the year) but if he can find his 09 form, he's a chance to come in again. At the moment it looks a fair way off though.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

because he's shithouse

bit harsh....injuries are hurting him big time as he tries to battle back but Motlop has just taken his opportunity and hasn't looked back.

If he can find more fitness in the reserves and really push for another shot in seniors, he's a very valuable small crumbing forward, extremely skillful and deadly around goals especially in a final as he's got experience and a stronger body than the youngsters currently taking his spot.

Hopefully he finds his best form at the right time of the year and plays a part yet :thumbsu:

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

His always been a pretty average player to me, has never really done anything. Meant to have "zip" but I dont think its ever been on display that much or maybe i just dont like him.

Trade for Dangerfield?

He played well from 09-10, he kicked over 30 goals both years. I don't think he'll see too many more games, though. Not unless another small forward goes down.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

I feel sorry for Brynes. I just dont think he has been given barely a chance to regain any decent amount of form. Constant injuries, and when he does get into the side he is turfed out after a game or two.

Alot more upside then Stokes, imo.

ahh the memories are short....is the 2009 Gf that long ago???

Might be on his last legs at Geelong though....still....two premiership medals isn't too shabby

this sums it up. I see the selection table (ATM) as Varcoe, Motlop, Stokes & then Byrnes. He hasn't recaptured that outstanding 09 form and will struggle to hold down a regular spot without it. The real shame is that we need the 100 type game players to be developing in to better players to keep that balance between old, middle & young players. The likes of Bartel, Kelly, Enright etc etc all improved from that point.

We are looking very stong at the old & young end, a bit thinner in the middle.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

With a glut of small forwards who can play a bit of midfield as well (even considering Varcoe and Menzel's absence), Byrnes' form hasn't warranted selection so far. Still he's always been the type of player who can turn things around very quickly. He was on the scrap heap in 2008 and 2009 really seemed to come out of nowhere. I'll revisit this in two months, but I can see him hitting peak form in the VFL at some stage over that time and then, if he can carry that to AFL-level, he'll be a valuable player for us.

I think the thing with the inevitable Stokes/Byrnes comparisons is that, in recent times, even if Stokes is not hurting you on the scoreboard, he'll usually get his share of the ball. Byrnes has been practically invisible this year. Love Shagger (love all our players), but he clearly needs a stint in the VFL.

Because when you're in your late twenties, you have to be in the best 18 in order to get a game. He's not in the best eighteen at the minute and has been struggling in one-on-ones. I think it really is that simple.

In one way, he's suffered from being at Geelong because he's not part of the midfield rotations in the same way that he would be at another club. That said, he did get to pick up two premiership medallions.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

I like Byrnes, but it may be that he will be confined to cameo roles in future and has been overtaken by the likes of motlop varcoe etc
He is too 'one dimensional' .Stokes, despite his failings, is more versatile and a smarter player in the decision making areas of the game.
I do feel sorry for Byrnes as he rarely plays a game where his spot in the side is not under some sort of pressure and that must be confidence sapping.

Agree with you, very good summary.

I would be happy to see Byrnes back in form and if he can find it he still definitely has a role to play in bringing the kids through.

The forward pressure he brings to the side is also something we could really use (much as Motlop is improving his defensive pressure, this is still an area in which Shan would give us a lot, particularly while Trav is out).

But he's gotta be in form so he can contribute. At the moment he hasn't been able to find any form since his run of soft tissue injuries, hopefully he can.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

I also think that he doesn't get the opportunity to play in his best position at Geelong, either. He doesn't strike me as being a natural forward, he doesn't win enough of it when stationed in the forward fifty. In a different side, he'd be a rover or a wingman, although his dodgy disposal would hurt occasionally.

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

There are many measures of success at our Club and one of them is the quality of competition for spots on the Team.
It's a great thing that players like Byrnes and Stokes are feeling the heat as it means that our younger brigade are performing and taking the right steps.
We are building impressive depth in that all of the kids are showing promise of being AFL players. Motlop / Guthrie / T Hunt/ Smedts/ Brown/Horlin-Smith/ Stringer/ Gillies all look like they can play - not a dud amongst them.
With Shroder/ Walker/ Kersten / Murdoch/Hamling and others yet to be tested we appear to be in pretty good shape.
I'll gladly put in $50 for a bronze statue of Wells !!

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

Still a great player to have on the list. You need quality experienced players that can step in and hit the ground running, particularly come Sept. That siad, he is behind Varcoe, Stokes (plays a lot "harder" and a different role these days) Motlop and ven Chappy (with Chappy less able to go through the middle)

Id actually like to see Byrnes tried in a back pocket. In a Wojo style role...

Re: Shannon Byrnes?

An in-form Byrnes is exactly the type of player we need at the moment too, so it's a pity he is struggling so badly.

This is it right here...

In form and healthy, Shagga has great vision and delivery and is really good around the goals. He is not so much an in and under but a great line breaker.

For those that wanna lay the boot, go watch the 2009 GF and pay close attention to the 2nd half - you will find several moments where his skills and pace were plenty good....

Sadly, this year coming back after the knee and calf I think it was, he has been caught with the ball or rushed in his disposal and the resulting efficiency has been poor at best.

Not sure if it is just he is 1/2 step slower or over thinking it or its that vicious circle of wanting to do the right option, thinking there might be a better one, looking for it and its face in the dirt time as he gets pinged....

The pressure from Motlop, Hypen, Stringer, hell even Chappy getting back amongst it doesn't help his cause.

Maybe the step down in class will get him that confidence back that the first option is the right one and give him that Shagga speed back....

( and maybe even a right foot... nah... who am i kidding....:p)

Go Catters

And let's face it, he's always been a fringe dweller at Geelong. Luckly to get a gig in the GF's in which he played.
