A skillful outside midfielder would probably suit our team.My query would be on fitness/injury and whether he is still at his peak.

That is a fair question and one I am sure the club would cover before agreeing to any trade. If he is fit imagine our midfield all of a sudden if we take Scully and Trengove. Holy Crap

I would think Pick 18 and Jamar could well end up being the offer from our side, and if he nominates us that will be the best Port can hope for, otherwise he'll walk.

It is interesting to note that he has connections with Bailey, Mahoney and Aaron Davey (cousin), so we would certainly have some hope in that sense.

We'd want to be confident we weren't picking up an injury prone crock ,who's best days are behind him.

I just don't think he would suit our team.He picked us as one of his preffered teams to join.Oh Lucky us!!!

I tend to agree. May not be the easy sell most would think him to be.
A medical may uncover more issues than it's worth.

The reputation is there but the inclination may not be.

Burgoyne has only nominated us so that Port don't play hard ball when it comes to trading with Hawthorn, in my opinion. If he is genuinely interested and nominates us Port will get an epic shafting. They will either get enormously under compensated or lose him for nothing.

exactly what i think.

His manager knows we have the psd pick 1. He won't play for us.

But we can still wish for a PSD that falls in our laps (IMO Jurrah was an absolute fluke).

Well said FS! Second that motion... :thumbsu:

From memory Byron Pickett and Burgoyne were quite close while Pickett was at Port, would be interesting to know if Burgoyne has spoken to Pickett about the possibility of coming to Melbourne and what Pickett’s thoughts were on the club. Personally I think we will make a big play for Burgoyne, that fact we have so many indigenous players I think could play a big part in his decision. His knowledge and experience would invaluable for the likes of Jetta, Bennell, Jurrah and even Davey. If we were to try and trade for Burgoyne I would hate to see us give up pick 2 but could understand pick 18. Would make our choice at pick 2 even more interesting.

MS Word??

Club has changed sooo much since Byron left so i dont think that would hold any sway. Furthermore, pick 2 its pretty much a given we will take the best player available rather than needs. No point taking someone at 2 which other clubs would at 10.

A few things -
When are we expected to push for finals, and then a flag? I'd say finals in 2 years, flag in 4.
SBurgoyne is 26 turning 27 and barring injury will play for 4+ years.
He is exactly the type of player we need running through the midfield - gamebreaker, x-factor, quick, skillful and experienced.
On song he is a genuine elite player.
He would definitely be one of our top two midfielders next year(Col being the other) and if he cops a tag it frees up the likes of Davey on a wing.
We can afford to pay him almost anything - You have to pay 92.5% of the salary cap as a minimum, that's what we payed this year, and to do it we had to front end a lot of contracts meaning that there will be quite a lot of extra $$ floating around next year needing to be used.
He is worth taking.

I think a trade along the lines of
Pick 18 + pick 34 = Burgoyne.
OR
Pick 2 + Bell(or the like) = Burgoyne + Boak/pick 8

Let's try not to get ahead of ourselves here, pick 2 is almost guaranteed to be a good player, but there is no chance they will be a superstar and this draft is comparable to the likes of 2003 in terms of talent available.
S Burgoyne is a superstar with 70+ games left in him and he will dramatically improve our team next year.

Does anyone think we would be able to do this deal with the hawks??

Pick 18 + Warnock = Pick 9

Then we could on-trade pick 9 for Burgoyne which should be enough. Thats of course assuming the hawks are somehow turned off going for him...

IMO Warnock is vital for our backline... i think Warnock would do more for our backline then Burgoyne would do for the midfield.

Burgoyne + Boak is closer to pick 2+18, but I'd be lynched for saying something like that around here.

More like picks 1 & 2 lol

I thought today Salopek and Shaun and a 3rd round pick for pick 2 and a 2nd round pick or pick 2 and a player perhaps?

Pick 2 (& 18) for Shaun Burgoyne and Pick 8?

Remember if both teams feels like they are being hard done by it is probably close to the mark. If you are happy with the deal from your clubs perspective, It is probably reaming us!

Deals are never this complicated.

Back to basics, we'll offer 18 and they won't accept it. Burgoyne will end up elsewhere, or slip through in the PSD.

I have seen on the Hawthorn board some posters entertain the possibility of Burgoyne going into the ND (with the new rules) which may suit him better than the PSD if he is only bluffing about being interested in Melbourne. I can't see it myself but if he did then all of a sudden our pick 18 becomes pick 17. :thumbsu:

Here is my spill on this (not that it matters). I don't think SB will go to PSD unless he is strongly desires only to be with Melbourne (in all truth, unlikely). So MFC will have to offer at least their 2nd round (pick 18) to get him. why? because essendon (and maybe hawthorn) are likely to offer a lot more e.g. 2nd round + lovett. So unless he wants to do the dirty on PA (which doesn't seem likely) he's gonna cost you a pick or two (or a decent pick + player). Also because you guys are highly unlikely to trade pick 2 for SB, by attaining him you will be overloading midfielders (+scully +trengrove) and this will also mean less game time to develop the young guns. Instead you guys should probably be looking at your forward line b/c your back line is set to be great, midfield will also be very good in a few years but your forward line is probably the worst in the competition and although it will improve i don't think it'll be anywhere near the same level as your midfield or defence come 3-4 years. In addition to these points is it financially wise for MFC to sign a injury prone player probably having to splash 2.5mill over 3 years?
FWIW, if you can get him in the PSD he's worth his weight in gold, if not i probably wouldn't touch him. If you're going to trade, go for walker, maybe even hurley (pick 1 anybody? :)) but you definitely need to improve your forward line unless you wanna become like carlton in 3-4 years.
my two cents :)

*edit* i'd probably trade pick 18 to hawthorn for beau dowler, they can use 18+25 for SB as looks like hawthorn are his favoured club

It's not that Melbourne supporters would feel 'hard done by', they would be calling for sackings if a deal involving pick 2 was used for Burgoyne.

PSD or nothing. If we traded, we wouldn't be able to offer what Hawthorn or Essendon could. Therefore, our only way of getting him would be if he goes in the PSD.

I'd take that in a heartbeat.

Warnock is massively overrated by Melbourne supporters. If you read Sean Wellman's assessment of our kp backmen, Garland, Frawley, Martin, McNamara and Warnock, you'll understand why Warnock is expendable. He did a good job on the plodders (Hale and Tredrea) but can't handle the key forwards who run all day (Brown and Riewoldt).

Plodding, stay at home key forwards are being fazed out of AFL football, hence Warnock value to the side is overestimated.

Doesn't matter what you read its what you see, and if you've seen our games this year you would understand that Warnock is of high value. He doesn't struggle on the run all day forwards, its probably the plodders who do him the biggest damage. Wellman's comments are a load of rubbish:

Tredrea 9 marks 6.1 (in earlier round)
Brown had 8 marks for 5.1
Riewoldt (game at GC) 10 marks 4.1

Martin is a ruckman, Dean Bailey has realised that now. He got a great education down back but doesn't read the game well enough. His opponents can slip off him.

Rivers and McNamara are only fourth talls, and Garland is worth a shot in the forward line.

Frawley is a gun but he can play in the same defence as Warnock, Rivers and McNamara. The Geelong defence with Scarlett, Harley, Milburn and Taylor show you can easily have 4 genuine taller players. Frawley and McNamara both give good run, and Rivers gets to a lot of the right positions.

Why would you trade a genuine honest player, for a flakey might make it player. Surely its a better move to try Garland up forward and then if you end up with too many defenders then so be it. I'd rather have a dominant defence and be short up forward than have an average defence and still not setting the world on fire up front.
