Have read the article in today Sun written by Kevin Sheedy on the National Draft, I found it an interesting piece of self justification of his draft picks
Sheedy under the guise of commenting on the National Draft , starts by commenting about the apparent recent rise in youth and points to instance’s in the past of players who were excellent at young age .Fair enough
He then states
“People keep bringing up these young names-Chris Judd, Andrew Walker and Kane Tenace-yet there are so many examples of young men who have achieved great things before this bunch”
Really Kevin, people keep bring up these names? Judd, yes, into his 3rd year and referred to quite a lot. Walker and Tenace might have been in the paper but really does that mean people keep bring their names up?
Later in the article he states
“The coaches who want to sit back and let their recruiting staff do it all should get a kick up the backside. If you let the recruiting department have all the say and pick all the players, it your fault if the list is no good and you should get the sack”
“You can keep picking the best players but they might be all midfielders”
“Kane Tenace might win a Brownlow Medal but we think Brent Stanton and Ricky Dyson will be in our best 22 and we will still have a 196cm centrehalf-back in Kepler Bradley."
In this second reference to Tenace he has really gone out of his way to show that he (not his team) has made a top choice in picking Bradley and that they have got others to fill the role that Tenace would have had in an Essendon side.
In truth, no doubt, Essendon nee Sheedy probably has been the master of the draft for ages and he certainly has always made sure he’s had some big guys with talent, whether Bradley goes on to be more valuable than Tenace will not be sorted till some time in the future but there are couple observations that can be stated now.
Essendon had the choice of either so it was Sheedy judgement to take Bradley.
Why mention Tenace who’s only played a handful games like this and compare him to Bradley?
Why talk about Tenace winning Brownlows?
Would it be behind the scenes at Windy Hill some murmings have found there way to the coach? Have there been questions like “Why didn’t we get that Tenace kid, Sheeds?” Sheedy wouldn’t have written the article to justify the decision would he?
Let hop Tenace can really embarrass him in the future. Wouldn’t it be nice for Tenace to have the Dons as his bitch team. Every time he plays them he’s in the votes.
Ohh, wouldn’t that be tasty!!!
