Visited family in NSW over Christmas and stayed in a hotel on the outskirts of Sydney that was run by an ex-coach of Michael Clarke when he played in the under 21's.

He said that Australia will remain poorly competitive if Clarke is made captain of our test side, and his reasons were;

* Wont be told because he knows everything.
* Most players don't like him or his ego.
* Sooks and spits the dummy easy.
* Selfish and only thinks and does for himself.
* Parents repeatedly stick their nose in and influence his affairs.

If the above is only half true, I don't think he should captain Australia either. What do others think?

As grim as it is do you guys really have a better choice?

Hussey would be a good option if he was 5 years younger. Seems to live for Cricket.

Watson seems like a dumbass.

Unless you bring someone into the team simply to captain. E.g White but im not convinced he's good enough.

Something I heard that was quite disturbing recently was an interview on ABC radio with Greg Chappell.

When asked by Glen Mitchell who the next test captain will be and when, Chappell without hesitation said "I can say that Michael Clarke will be Australia's next captain to take over from Ricky, but when that will be I don't know".

That suggests to me that the selectors are not basing the captaincy on form or ability, but rather on who they decide based on personality!

That in my opinion is why we are in trouble already, and if the selectors keep the same selection criteria, we are going to struggle for some years to come.

No.

but they've already decided so lets hope they put a decent support group around him.

punter had gilly, warne, haydo's, mcgrath amongst others to guide him.

Now there is no one.

There was a theory going around that North's selection was in part a transition and support for clarke given his experience and the fact he is a top fellow.

I can't see WA being a strong team atm, so where that leadership applies aside from being a much loved sandgroper I don't know :(

Seriously, we can only hope Haddin retires from Test cricket. Paine screams captain - has all the attributes, is the right age to lead long term, and doesn't have an overinflated opinion of himself.

We realy just need Hussey and Katich to be 5 years younger and they would be shoe-ins.

Well, I'd prefer he didn't go around telling the batsmen to 'play their natural game' when they have to bat 2 days, but considering the state of the team by the beginning of the 4th day in Sydney, that's probably a minor quibble.

^This. It was well documented what an arrogant cricketer Clarke was in his debut with the side, but all reports suggested he did a complete 180 when he was dropped. Nowday's his only bad image is the news surrounding him and Lara Bingle which is personal and got nothing to do with cricket.

Also the point about players not liking him or his ego only applies to the oldies who are still around. Katich is gone, Ponting will probably follow soon and Hussey is getting older. They're really the last surviving 3 from the oldies brigade. The younger players who will enter the side from there will hang on every word Clarke says.

Do you get your jollies making fun of young people hey Spook the Hawthorn supporter?

It makes you feel a bigger man does it?

Tim paine should not be captain. he should be behind wade for the keeping spots in test and one day teams. stats prove it.

Cam White should be made one day captain today. i also hope whitey decides to bowl himself moore. last i heard he was trying a whole new technique. imo whitey needs a summer in england to tune up his bowling then for the next test we have bring him into the team as captain and let him bat at 5.

Stats also prove that White is incompetent as a bowler.

He isn't even good enough to be a part timer.

i concur however...

cam white: 172 FC wickets at 40.4
Nathan Hauritz: 154 FC wickets at 42
Steve Smith: 49 FC wickets at 48.51

Back on the subject, I think most of this is already well known about him, that is why he is the most hated australian cricketer of all time. If he is ever made official captain, Australia will lose a lot of fans.
