There are different types of leaders don't necessarily have to be the most gutsy or most vocal. There is no presence about Murph however. As soon as the hard tag goes on him he just seems to resign himself to the fact that he is in for a hard day. He needs to watch someone like Ablett. Doesn't strike me as overly vocal on the field but (despite being an exceptional talent) is always on the move. Murph is never on the move at a stoppage which makes it incerdibly hard for a team mate to block or for any illegal attention being noticed by an umpire. He really needs to take his work rate to a different level.

We need a generation of Simpson's.

My thoughts EXACTLY. Jobe these are the personalities you look for in a captain.

Sorry, I don't think I'd want a gloating drug cheat as my captain.

He's one you absolutely cannot feel for. He was in a position of authority of his teammates. He was one that had to stand up yet he did not.

Not a captain's arseh*le.

Same thing, I guess.

Agree with you on Ling, didn't want him in the conversation on drugs.

No, Murph should not stand down as captain. It is a role that can be grown into. Was Judd a great outspoken leader? No he led by deeds and actions. Would Gablett have been a great leader at Geelong? No, he needed success and mentoring from a strong leadership (on and off field) team. After the success he has become a leader by example and also feedback to the youngsters at the Suns.

I hope Murph can continue to grow as a leader and a player. I also think that with some miles in his legs Carrots will become that play-maker that creates some space for Murphy, resulting in better football by example. He had a bit of a go on Saturday but looks like he blew up too far from the end of the game.

Both Carlton and Richmond made the same mistake with their captains. Not the players choice in any way with either player but they got their timing wrong. Why you would bestow such a burden on such young players is bewildering.
The perfect age is 27 ish. A player of this maturity knows their own game, their own strengths and limitations and have built up some general life skills that will enable the to converse with all ages of the playing group.
In hindsight whilst a little older Simpson would have been the perfect choice for two years before handing over to Murphy.
For some reason everyone is after the next Carey. Look what it has done to poor Jack Trengrove. Neeld has effectively ruined the kid.

I'm not sure about the age being a problem. Selwood and Swallow are the same age as Murphy and are great captains. Judd should have been left as captain until Malthouse got to know the group better. Murphy as vice captain for a year with some help to grow into the role would have been fine but you cant throw an introvert into the role without helping them develop.
In my opinion Murphy should now stay as captain but Simpson should be promoted as co captain. Ive never liked the idea before but it makes sense for these guys and Its worked at other clubs so why not?

Judd wasn't any great shakes as captain either. This leading by example mythology really needs a respectful burial. Otherwise make your best player captain and be done with it.

Totally agree with this.

You're sly.

Why should Ling have his name attached with a drug cheats when I was responding to one of the two names you posted? He's above that.

That you think Watson is a good captain demonstrates that you have some serious character issues going on.

I remember attending the pre-match function in Brisbane (for the final in '09).

Stephen Kernahan was trying to put Chris Judd's captaincy over. He told a story about Judd's first days with his new teammates and Sticks at a lunch. It was the off season. Said that Ryan Houlihan had ordered fries with his lunch. Judd apparently had a go at Hoops for doing so, saying that chips were unhealthy to eat and that he had to watch his diet. Sticks said that was the first bit of leadership Judd provided at the club and it was a big step in the right direction. Not knocking Judd at all for his choice to eat healthy year round and Sticks got the desired result, cheers and laughter from the gallery, but it now stands out to me as a little misguided professionalism or rather as a sign of just how far back the club was coming from.

Disagree. Carried the team on his back plenty of times and was a important leader off-field who improved our training standards by leading from the front.

Put your self in Murphy's shoes. Would you step down? Would you be peeved if the club took it off you if you still wanted it?
The uproar the media would create about it and the bagging he would cop on the field would be a whole lot worse to what he is copping now. His first 2 games weren't that bad, the last 2, he had 21 blokes beside him who failed to do their jobs. We lack mongrels with muscle who will stand up for their captain, he has been chosen, now it is up to him to get the boys on side and performing. If we were 4-0 and he was playing shite, would he be questioned as captain? Maxwell has copped it from the media and peers for not being a fantastic player yet is a premiership captain.
Get him all the help he needs and get the team to play football and all this goes away. They won't take it off him unless he agrees to it, much the same as if Thomas gets injured this year, the media will report it as his ankle whether it is or not. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, so I'll back him in

The club is stating it isn't in turmoil then the president comes out and says he is stepping down mid year and then we want the elected captain to stand down also? May as well blow up the place with everyone in it and start from scratch. The boat has sailed now, too late on Murphy and we need to stick with him now and hope he grows into the role we need him to. We don't have anyone else to take on it. Ideally Simmo should have been given it after Judd until Murphy or any other was ready. Now Simmo is older, Carrazzo is also.

Now is the time for Murph to stand up and be counted. It is the perfect opportunity for him (actually that was probably against Melbourne) to do so.

Through adversity to the stars (the RAAF's motto which I use on my posts (Per ardua ad astra)).

Am I the only one who would've thought it would've been very interesting if we gave the captaincy to Nick Duigan?

IMO I didn't really want Murphy as captain from the start, I thought Simpson, Carrots or Jamison should've been given the captaincy. Murph is probably our best player behind Judd at the moment imo, but the best player doesn't always make the best leader.

I think Murph has got to LIFT somehow someway as captain. It still feels kinda embarrassing that Carrazzo was the one doing the talking at 3 quarter time against Essendon when it should've been Murph showing the kind of captain he can be at this club.

Duigan may have made a very good captain but wasn't in our best 22, yet at the moment??? ( he is still on our list isn't he)

Was it embarrassing when SOS spoke out at 3/4 time when he wasn't captain? Would it be embarrassing if Mitchell spoke out over Hodge or Feltcher over Jobe? Media upbeat, Carazzo is in the leadership group so why not?
