I am on record as one who suggested that he should be considered to be chopped come delistings. I don't think that it was that strange. He only managed 4 games as a 24-25 year old when at that maturity he should have been a regular player. At his age I thought that he was just a fringe player who would be a list clogger and someone who should make way for a promising youngster.

Agreed, he was the obvious one to go, given one had to go.
If he gets a regular game at Hawthorn, it's good for him, and good for us.

It makes us look as dumb as dishwater, but the Hawks just called up Simpkin to the GF.

Whatever we thought of him and his delisting I like when a player can turn around and give his old club two fingers, even if it's ours.

Is it OK to question whether the people who do the firing at GFC are as smart as the people who do the recruiting? Just think out loud.

Who else would you have rather lost?
He was a rookie on his third year if I remember correctly. It was promote or delist. We had no other option.

I liked him at the cats, but had no problem with his delisting, he was in an unfortunate situation where the rules changed forcing rookie numbers be changed from 6 to 4 - I doubt we would have let him go otherwise. So I am genuinely happy for him to be playing on Saturday.

Sorry to intrude guys.

I just want to say. I actually think Geelong did the right thing at the time when they delisted him. When you look at the youngsters who are developing at the time like Taylor Hunt, Murdoch, Schroder, Horlin-Smith, Stringer etc, they were all going to be ahead of Simpkin in the 'pecking order' no matter how good Simpkin form in the VFL was. While I don't think anyone would dispute Simpkin being a good depth/VFL player, he was never really going to push for a spot in the Cats best 22 at the time and even if he did, he would of stopped a younger player from getting some game time. The Cats made the right call.

Sheringham
Stringer

Big deal.He got lucky with Whitecross going down, otherwise he'd still be been running around in the VFL just like he would've been had he stayed at Geelong.

I always liked his willingness and hardness at the contest, never got the opportunity deserving a VFL B+F.
Hope he plays a blinder.

He is a good player, keeps his feet and is hard at the ball. I rated him a better player than Stringer and Schroder and I stand by that (though he is a fair bit older than those two).

I don't think it was a major blunder to let him go all the same. Hope he plays well in a losing side.....

Thought it was a bit strange he was selected for the Elimination Final last year and then delisted. Only played 4 games so we can hardly claim him as one of ours. Good lesson in persistence though

Two VFL B&Fs, a VFL flag and a Colac/Falcons boy to boot. I think he qualifies.

Sheringham
Stringer

If we take the decision on face value (i.e. that it was just a matter of choosing the best two out of Stringer/Sheringham/Simpkin and no external offers were on the table), I think it would have been very close between Sheringham and Simpkin. It's easy to say Stringer in hindsight, but I think he was really showing that he could have been something special last year. Quick, tough and pretty skillful. From memory, if we were just putting it down to what they had shown as players (without factoring in Stringer's indiscretion), he would have been well ahead at the time.

Is he better than Rivers????? Younger certainly.

WTF does Rivers have to do with Simpkin staying or going ?
They play at different ends.

Had Simpkin stayed Caddy may not have played as many games as he did.

Caddy >>>>>>>>>>>>> Simpkin

Simpkin is very unHawthorn - like
Not a great kick, in fact, often a clanger king.
I always thought if he was playing in a final for Hawks against us, we had a head start.
But he is better than Sheringham and Stringer.

not yet.
Caddy has shown good progress, but that is all.
Hardly a scary prospect for opposition coaches.

How many senior games has Caddy played?
How many senior games has Simpkin played?
How did Caddy go this year in the 3rd best team of the competition?
How did Simpkin go in the first placed team of the competition?

Get back to reality dude.

13 >'s is not reality , dude.
Simpkin will probably have a premiership medallion this time tomorrow, not bad company for his 2 VFL GF medals.
He's been ok in the #1 team, ok enough to be selected for a GF.

He worked his arse off that medallion didn't he?
He is obviously the reason why Hawthorn finished first this year right?

Caddy is the reason we made a prelim?

Did anyone hear Simpkin speak on SEN yesterday? I didn't catch all of it, but a snippet on their news update suggested that he felt that his 'AFL dream was over...' or words to that effect, when he was delisted by Geelong last year (I stress that it was the news presenter who said this, not the sound bite of Simpkin). I'd be interested to know exactly what he said, because if that's accurate (i.e. Simpkin wasn't aware that Hawthorn would pick him up, let alone put him on the senior list), it kind of blows my 'Simpkin, Geelong and Hawthorn had a gentlemen's agreement' theory out of the water and it means that they did choose to delist Simpkin over any of the other rookies last year, after playing in the elimination final.
