Just got home from work. The first thing I did was turn on my computer and go straight to this thread, hoping I would read that Skyrim has broken street date and I'd have to jump in my car and zip down the road to my local JB. Today is not my lucky day, it seems. Oh well, there's always tomorrow!

Starting to have a think about how I want to play the game. I played Oblivion as a Dark Elf and basically relied on destruction magic. I played Fallout 3 as a sniper and told myself that I wouldn't play New Vegas as a sniper, but alas, I played NV as a sniper. I guess this means I will probably use a lot of destruction magic in Skyrim. Has anyone else put much thought into what type of character they want to play?

Rang EB again just now, he said it didn't break today but "hopefully tomorrow". If it doesn't break tomorrow and they have cancelled their midnight release I'm going to be mildly filthy at having to wait another ~9 hours to play!

I have had a bit of a think about it. I played Oblivion as a Khajiit, used Stealthy mostly. Mastered sneak and security and all that, used bows and swords. Was terrible at any sort of magic, apart from restoration.

I think im leaning towards being a Nord in Skyrim, sticking to the theme :p. Will probably use blades again, have always preferred them. But the magic looks pretty awesome in this, so I just don't know.

I've basically never played an rpg, but the trailer makes this look pretty sweet, and you guys seem to be freaking out over it. Think I'll give it a go

Prepare your body...

Inevitably my first character ends up being a jack of all trades. I then go more class specific for following playthroughs. On Oblivion I started with an Imperial that did eveything, a Khajit thief/archer, a Breton mage an Orc warrior and finally an Argonian that did everything.

For Skyrim I'm thinking along the lines of -
- Nord that does everything
- Wood Elf thief/archer
- High Elf Mage
- Redguard Warrior
- Dark Elf combo, probably battlemage

It will depend greatly on how satisfying each combat style is. I generally love spell casters but I wasn't really a fan of the spell casting in Oblivion. I will most likely end up a stealthy type coz I love stealing shit!

Can people explain the fascination with these games for someone who has never played them? What do you actually do in them?

Might pick up a copy once uni exams are over.

Well, they have the main quest line, which you can just choose to follow straight away, but they also have a lot of side quests to do. You can choose what sort of player you want to be. You can use magic, blades, blunt weapons, bow and arrow, even go around fist fighting people. You choose what race you want to be at the start, then customize your character as you see fit.

So in short, it's a fantasy RPG, where you can choose how you want to play, where you want to play, and how quick you want to go through it, etc.

I'd like to add that the worlds are huge and the game is geared towards exploration.

Yeah, and this. Could have sworn I put that in, but apparently not :p

Freedom of choice. And all the little things that other games don't have. You can play for 100+ hours and still find things that are new and interesting.

Plus, dragons. That old gameplay video of the dude attacking some giants, then a dragon came out of nowhere and massacred everything.

Just a complete world where you can do what you want, how you want.

It's the freedom of being given control of a muscular, extremely fit, magic wielding evil prick..and the ability to freely rape and/or pillage innocent villagers and townships.

Things that by doing in real life would give you long-term imprisonment.

It'll break tomorrow. I'm pretty confident. I'll likely still buy it even though it probably won't be released on Steam until Friday.

I will set my alarm for 8:45, check this thread firstly, then call EB, then run as fast as I can if it does break.

Don't release dates usually break at 2-3pm?

Even if that's the case, I will use those hours to pump myself up as much as physically possible :p
