This is really strange, Its happening quite frequently recently, the other day I was listening to the radio, there was an advertisement for the beach at Glenelg, and straight away I could smell the beach as if I was there. The sea water. I couldn't replicate this. No matter how hard I thought I couldn't replicate it.

Today I'm watching videos on youtube, on a playlist, I forget about the playlist being auto play, I listen instead of watch. When my video finished, the next video came on and caught me by surprise. It was a high speed train arriving at a train station. Immediately I could vividly smell the burning metal from the train.

I've tried researching this, but can't get any serious responses, or information. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this phenomenon.

Same.

Hippocampus used to develop memories - links between where sounds and smells located in the brain.

Whats the deal with not being able to replicate it. It needs to be somethign that happens out of my control. I tried it before with gunpowder and gas, and while I knew the distinct smell, and could understand what it smells like, I couldn't actually smell it.

I do also remember when I was seeing someone recently, I could smell her perfume everywhere, and her natural scent, despite it quite clearly not being present.

Its probably associated memory located in the inferior temporal complex.

Some smells remind me of a time and so does some music it links with a specific time in my life.

Do you know the song "Not the Crows again", I always think of the Crows winning the flags.

So when I heard the other day at my parents place the song by On The Road Again -Willie Nelson I immediately thought of the Crows winning back to back flags.

Something your club should try! But first try wining another flag to draw level with us Lol. :p

LOL, had to throw that one in didn't you. I am familiar with that type of memory, I hear a song on the radio, that I was listening to over and over again in 2000, I can remember precise moments in that time, what I was doing, things I was ashamed of, things I was proud of, achievements etc.

I tried that trick out the other day, listened to a song, I was listening to on the bus last year, and I could visualize key moments and people I saw on the bus, bus being late, etc, pretty powerful.

I could bring the Crows winning those flags into any conversation lol

The memory stuff you speak off was done on TBBT, Amy did it to Sheldon giving him the Quick milkshake and played Mario tunes so he would be happy at Amy's place lol

Never really got this, but I can "remember" taste,

Can anyone else do this? Not sure if this is normal or not.

Funnily enough, I remember people here on forums by avatars. I only just realized your userid when I bothered to look. The avatar is the easiest thing to acknowledge, and its a killer when people change it. Like timtamWB and peternorth

Same here. Takes me forever to get used to new avatars. Reading usernames is a last resort.

If I'm in the supermarket and in the pet food aisle and look at the cat food I can smell it (well, I'm not really smelling it, just imaging it) and then I start dry-retching. Have been in supermarket lying on floor retching to the smell of cat food. Not a cool look.
