🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Would rather Moore over Ball anyday at 26!

Hope Ball goes to Collingwood!

Panos at 24 would be great! Love his game also. And like Crichton also.

Brisbane to pick up Dennis Lane with pick 91 and become bargin pick of the year.
Great work Snoop Dogg!

yeah I think he may come in - originally had him out just bc he has been passed over twice i think now. But his efforts this year were terrific so will probably go late.

Well thats another draft year done and in some ways more questions than answers.

Overall comments
Happy to get around 70% of the players that went. Thats about usual but this was a bloody hard year to predict and a number like Bollenhagen were close for me.

Number that I knew would be in the mix like Dea and Grimley and Howard but I just hadnt seen enough and like doing my mocks on what I have seen.

Few I was shocked didnt go;

Panos - I am a massive fan but the ghost of Gourdis and Arrowsmith return. Like Panos I had them high and they went rookie. Maybe he just aint big enough or has enough tricks but I would have him ahead of many of the others even still. Still........wasnt on my own

Dare - He was hyped up and whilst I had him late I still felt sure he would go.

Temel - Got some mail earlier in the week he was 50:50 but I thought someone would take the punt. He must get a rookie spot.

Carey / Hooper / Ledin / Hutchings / Ah Chee - I should have learnt my lesson with Batsanis, De Boer, Kelly and HUrley. One paced ball winning mids dont rate highly and are much more rookie chances. I think thats BS so will continue to rate these blokes more highly. Carey was a real shock though. His carnival was terrific.

Donaldson & Hartigan - I would have thought there athletic credentials would have him there. Another that must be rookied. Hartigan didnt have a great year so maybe thats the issue.

On the hand happy with;

Got 70% of them overall

Weedon - Originally had him at 23 but pushed him back to 61. I am a big fan of the kid so happy to be one of the few that called him.

Sumner - Bit like above. I thought he was a class act so pleased to see him go high.

Melksham - was confident he would go high all along

Jordan Williams - was happy to see him get a chance

Tutt - almost squealed when he went that high. Big fan of the kid.

Some terrific kids in the rookie draft though so will be really eager to see how that plays out.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating Snoop, your guy Panos not drafted, my guy Griffiths pick 19. You can't say you weren't told and I kept that booking for the psychiatrist's couch for you. Like I said to you a while back, anyone who thinks Panos is a first rounder is mad.

Plenty of good judges had him pal.........not sure i need a physchiaritrist for that. Look fwd to your full draft list next year now that you are an expert.

You told me to book you in! I'll settle for being a better judge than you, here endith the lesson. I also informed Extreme Black and White readers Christian Howard was a possible first round pick, Didn't see him on your list though.

Snoop - was very excited Tutt went so high myself.

Between the two of us, I think we generated a bit of BF support - his footskills are so sublime I was sure he'd be picked up.

yeah he was certainly one that snuck under a few radars - could to see Williams go as well.

Were you surprised Crichton dropped? I think Howard really stuffed the order up. Pretty happy with Davies as well as had plenty tell me he wasnt going to get drafted. I really like him and its a win for those player types who arent the best kicks. Good call on Webberley as well my man.

Not so surprised - there was a huge number of extractors, and Jesse's lack of improvement this year probably warned recruiters off a little bit. He's ferocious, feeds the ball out well, keeps his feet in the contest, is quick and runs all day but his disposal and his size go against him a little bit.

Thanks on Webberley - I've always been a believer and I'm glad he got a gig, and more so that it's at the Tigers.

Lesson from you....funny stuff? Maybe you can do that when you actually watch some junior footy instead of trawling a whole bunch of boards and do your own mock for us to judge you on.

From here on pal - rather you just didnt bother posting in this thread!

yeah that was an added bonus for you.

Not sure about Milnes chances in the rookie. Tested well but there are a few rucks in there that will be in the mix with Hannath, MacCauley, Hayward, Jones, McMahon his main competitors I would have thought.

Archer a chance and Groenewegen I guess but I really worry about how the latter has come on this year. He was top 20 at the start of the year.

Thought I would put together a mock PSD and Rookie for a bit of fun. Names arent in any real order (particularly the rookie) but more just getting the names out there. Was interesting because there are some decent kids in the mix and was hard to leave a few out as well so have added them at the bottom (will add a few more if I get the chance). As it gets closer I might rejig it a bit but would be interested in other folks thoughts on who they think might slip in to the mix.

Pre-Season Draft

1. Melbourne Joel McDonald (Brisbane Lions)

2. Richmond M.Panos / Norwood / 193cm / 85kg

I think we all find a player in the draft that we just really like for whatever reason. Probably explains why I had him so early in the ND but I wasn’t on my own there. It’s amazing in a period where we have few real quality Full Forwards (Franklin, Roughy about it) that this bloke is overlooked. If memory serves the only true FF taken in the draft was Butcher. It’s not as if they don’t make a difference in the games that count. I just love a tough aggressive key position forward and this bloke has all those qualities in bucket loads. Very fit fella who keeps on presenting all day and is prepared to hurt blokes in the marking contest. Seen a bit of him and just love the way he hits the pack and sends the opposition defenders scattering. Can play either FF or CHF – played more CHF at champs but I saw him play FF and preferred him there. Had a really good champs and form has been good at the local level as well. From memory he was the leading goal scorer at the champs with 14-or 15 and was deadly accurate. Super mark and a deadly accurate kick he also brings others into the game and is always talking on the field and leading by example. The knock on him is he probably can only play forward and doesn’t have to many tricks. All in all though a good selection for the Tigers who need to look to life after Richardson.
Others to consider: Been a lot of interest in Tighe and he was very unlucky so would think he is in their minds. Temel was being courted by Tigers but think they went cold. Donaldson another I really rate.

3. Fremantle Adam McPhee (Essendon)

4. West Coast John Bennell / Collingwood Rookie List

Youngster who only got one year with the Pies on the rookie list. I was a little surprised because he showed glimpses all year and was tried in a range of spots. Creative small fwd with electric pace and foot skills pretty good. Something has obviously happened where the lad was homesick etc and the Pies have done the right thing. Just the type the Eagles need and they have the time to develop him. He might come back to haunt us I think.
Others to consider here: I think it would have to be redrafting a McNamara but more likely to rookie I would have thought or taking one of the mature age WA blokes like Hardingham, Howlett etc who they think might make a difference.

5. Sydney Daniel Bradshaw (Lions)

6. Port Adelaide Cameron Cloke (Carlton)

7. Essendon Michael Barlow (Werribee)

Originally had Patrick here but he got snapped up as a NT zone selection by GC.

Swans – NSW Rookie Selection

D.McNeil / Murray Bushrangers / 178cm / 75kg

A players player and bloody unlucky to be left out. I think he kind of new as he was preparing himself for Rookie from the start. Better player IMO at the same age as Bird so would be a terrific selection. Capt of the NSW side and won the best player for Div 2. Great leader on the field and from all reports just a fantastic kid with a super work ethic. Very courageous player who is superb at the clearances (and remember NSW didn’t have a fabulous ruck division). Amasses big stats and tends to use by hand and foot very well – in fact its his outside game and execution skills by foot that have really improved this year. I really hope this kid gets the chance because fans will love watching him play. Many of my fellow posters I think have him higher than here and he thoroughly deserves to be but I get a bit worried about the combination of height and explosive pace holding him back a bit.

Others for the Lions to consider: Young Leroy Eglomesse is a bit of a wild card. Plays back pocket but very quick and seems to get through traffic pretty well. Undersized but might be worth a punt. Sergeant is the other one along with Duncan. Sergeant kicked 5 in a game I was at and showed plenty but wasn’t that dominant at Champ time when he needed to be. Sam Crichton also been training with them. Haven’t got my notes with me but the big bloke (#27 I think) who played ruck and had a heap of agility and aggression caught the eye as well.

Brisbane Lions – QLD Rookie Selection

M. Fowler / Southport / 184 / 85

I originally had him in the mix for National Draft but he probably didn’t have enough x factor to go I guess. Very strong kid who plays lead up HF. Could easily play FF as well as a part of rotation. Strong hands, nice balanced and a beaut kick for goal. He could be ready to go pretty quickly. I didn’t think he would test to well but he is good on the sprint and has a nice leap. With those strong hands there is plenty to work with.

C.Beams / Labrador / 182cm / 78kg

Claye is an outstanding young cricketer who if doesnt play AFL will potentially end up playing for QLD or even Vic as there was some talk he was signing down here. Only really stepped back into AFL this year after seeing brother Dayne go so well and played a number of reserves (4) and senior games (6) for Labrador where his results were good for someone with such little recent footy – he wasn’t even on the roster at the start of the year and only asked for a game in May! After playing 6 senior games went back to the reserves so he could qualify for the reserves finals side and showcase his game a little more. He is a midfield type who from all reports plays like his brother in that he is tough at the contest, has good endurance, neat skills and finishes well in front of goals and ultimately could play a variety of positions around the flanks. Lions might see him as someone who they could grab late but given he tested well and shows a lot of promise they may take him here.

Brock McCauley / Southport / 199cm / 97kg

Big tall who comes off the Southport production line that has produced some beauties like Tippet and either Renouf or White I think. Had a terrific year and I thought he must have been close. Have seen a bit of him but knowing Quigleys a fan helps me pick him. Screening results were a long way ahead of what I thought I had seen. Can play ruck or key position and wouldn’t surprise me if he ended up being a ruck / fwd.

Others for the Lions to consider: I think MaCauley and Fowler are standouts. Beams is the 50:50 one and they could easily go with kids like Lock who I don’t think has signed with anyone yet (maybe wrong) or Tapp who comes off the HBF and uses it pretty well. Also fans of Bevan and Hutchison who are taller KP types. Hutchison is one I really like but just hasn’t done enough and unsure about how much development left.

ROOKIE DRAFT

# 1 Gold Coast Sam Iles / Box Hill / 185 / 83

Seems like Sam Iles is set for the Gold Coast as a mature age recruit and its well deserved. Had a terrific year at VFL level after struggling to get into the Collingwood senior side but a string of terrific performances for their VFL side. A Tasmanian kid who goes all day, wins his own footy and uses it pretty well. I think the knock on him was probably his decision making under pressure and his lack of pace. Still as these kids get older they get smarter and can mask their deficiencies and I think Sam fits that bill. Good luck Sammy!

2 Gold Coast Luke Ablett / Sydney Swans

3 Gold Coast Daniel Harris / North Melbourne

4 Gold Coast Mitch Thorp / Hawthorn

Probably a bit of a surprise but I think it would make sense for this kid to go GC. Get out of the spotlight and give himself a year to get completely fit knowing he is on a list in 2011. No question he has talent.

5 Gold Coast Scott Harding / Brisbane Lions

Another I was a bit surprised Lions let go. Has good skills and is a really good runner. Best game I saw him play was at their home ground and his fitness base will suit him there.

Others the GC could look at: Obvious ones are Tenace (Cats) & McNamara (WCE) as well as Harris from North but wonder if he just a tad old for them and the 2011 start. Hardingham and Howlet are players from the WAFL whilst Barlow and Pederson from VFL and O’Hara and Stopp from the SANFL.

6 Melbourne M.Newton / Melbourne

Get the sense Melbourne have indicated they would redraft Newton…….suspect Dee fans are divided on that question. Seems odd to commit to players until you know whats there.

7 Richmond Mark Hutchings / East Perth / 180cm / 82kg

Every draft seems to throw up a certain type of player and this year it seemed to be inside midfielders. Hutchings is another off the WA production line and frankly little separates him from many of the others that were taken in the ND. He is a bit smaller than the others and doesnt have a great deal of x factor or pace but he is just your good honest footballer who keeps on trying and never leaving much in the tank. Played league footy last year and his form and development continued this year. Built solidly and will definitely be ready to go in the Gold Coasts first year. The knock on him would be his foot skills are probably not as good as some that are before him but he is great at the ball, clears it well by hand and runs all day. Foot skills are ok but he is probably only in the good camp I would say. He is a better version of DeBoer for mine so he should definitely go. Nice replacement for Coughlan as well.

8 Fremantle Jack Hannath / Central Districts / 199 / 83

Tall athlectic ruck from SA who went to DC and tested pretty well. Had him on the cusp but I think he is an early rookie just because he is very light and is little chance of playing seniors in the next few years. Probably needs to do a lot more around the ground but what he does do is good. Certainly fit enough just needs to get himself in the right spots. Skills are good. I had him on the cusp of National Draft selection.

9 North Melbourne Majak Daw / Western Jets / 193 / 84

I think one of the real talked about kids in the ND. Plenty had him hyped up as a possible late round selection but I though he was probably always going to be an early rookie selection. This kid is the reason the rookie draft was created. Sudanese kid who is tall and moves like a bloody panther. Came to everyones attention when he booted 5 earlier in the year for the Jets. Skills seem ok but has a long way to go. Apparently a hell of a nice kid with good head on his shoulders and knows the road ahead of him. Could fall to the Saint, Dees or Bulldogs as well. Had thought about him as a Gold Coast selection but it’s a big gamble to take the kid away from his family…..hope he gets to stay in Melbourne.

10 Sydney A.Carey / Glenelg / 181cm / 79kg

Carey is an AFL / AIS graduate and is a very good cricketer as well. Strong build and very physical player who excels around the contest and is very courageous. Like many others in this draft has really good contested possession capability and his work around the clearances, particularly by hand, are exceptional. Can have a tendency to overplay the release but for the main part is very good. I think the knock on him is how much development is left in him and also whether he has the engine for the midfield at AFL level. I hope Collingwood take him.

11 West Coast Charlie McAdam / NT Thunder / 180cm / 81kg

One of my favourite players that I watched through the year. An overage player who really came on in the last 12 months. Plays HB and is used as a quarter back style player who reads the ball well and gets fed the ball to distribute on his left foot. Accumulates a lot of touches and his agility is a real feature in terms of allowing him time and space. He will need to be placed into a back line which is very accountable and use him as the player to release through. Very much a Roger Hayden / Wirrapanda type!

12 Port Adelaide Deon Gordon / NT Thunder / 185cm / 87kg

Solid lad who plays HB and oozes a heap of class. Beautifully skilled with really good balance at the contest. Can win his own footy but more likely an outside type who will have the ball directed through him on the way out. Got clean hands and seems to make terrific decisions, always having more time than he should. I think the knock on Deon is going to be his fitness base – he could shape up a bit and I think a bit more aggression at the contest would help him. Minus the physical aggression he reminds of a young Byron Pickett.

13 Hawthorn Wade Skipper / Western Bulldogs

14 Essendon R.Ah Chee / NT / 183cm / 81kg

Can play inside and outside as a midfielder and is very good at winning his footy (had the most touches at the champs for what thats worth). And does he win it – had something like 90 touches in his first 3 games of the champs .....or something like that. Has also played very well in the SANFL albeit I don’t think he has had much if any senior experience. Seeks to be very fit and he is a ball magnet. He is a compact little player and liken him to Foley insomuch as he just loves getting the footy at a contest and bursting away. Nice penetrating kick but it can be a bit hit and miss. In saying that he has an ability to finish his work with good goal scoring potential. Also fairly adaptable and could imagine him playing a variety of spots including a back pocket where he has the pace and strength to compete against small fwds.

15 Carlton Josh Dyson / Eastern Ranges / 181 / 69

Light kid who was in the mix for a late selection by Collingwood in the ND. Loads of potential and will be one to watch. Just looks like an AFL player – beautifully balanced, penetrating kick, can play a bit taller because of his leap and really good pace.

16 Brisbane Sean Tighe / Western Jets / 197 / 90

Tighe was appreantly in the mix late in the draft with the Lions who ultimately went with MacGuire instead. Think the Lions might take him first up and why wouldn’t they. Part of the Metro squad only to be cut….be forgiven for having a few ordinary weeks but instead turned out for the Jets the next week and had 35 touches and kicked 3 goals. Won the Western Jets B&F principally playing as a CHB but also has the ability to play other positions in the spine as well as the ruck. Ruck in fact could be an area he develops well into given he is very athletic, can take a grab, has a good leap on him and uses the footy pretty well. I like him and I would hope of all the potential tall backs we give this kid a shot.

17 Adelaide M.Pitt / Dandenong / 190 / 85

Myles didnt play a lot of TAC footy this year but really impressed when he did. Powerful FF for Dandy but will be a third tall at AFL level. Love his competitiveness and strength at the contest. Uses pill well off both sides which is a must for good fwds IMO and has the ability to make good decisions when looking for options.

18 Collingwood Josh Donaldson / West Perth / 194cm / 85kg

Versatile tall who represented WA at champs and can play a variety of positions. Mainly played as a back up ruck at the champs but at 193cm will be recruited to play back or possibly even CHF where he has done well at times. I think his best chance at AFL level is to become a FB or CHB where he has also spent some time. Got good athletic credentials, good pace for a big fella and a big leap on him. Can also take a contested grab and kick a goal so will be interesting to see how he develops. Similar to Ryder in many ways! Big chance Pies will take Kris Pendlebury around here.

19 Bulldogs Kyle Hartigan / Western Jets / 194 / 84

At the start of the year was one who was a definite top 20 prospect. Had some injury worries which haven’t helped but when up and about mostly plays CHB and entered the year as a really promising type who could take some contested grabs. Played champs this year and wasn’t as impressive as many would have hoped (maybe the injuries but was selected so.......). Still, has all the physical attributes to be a damaging player and if he can get going would be a great rookie selection.

20 St Kilda Ryan Davis / WCE

Knocked back a rookie contract with WCE so must be feeling confident of a chance with someone else.

21 Geelong J.Dare / Geelong Falcons / 188cm / 81kg

Very surprised he didn’t go in the ND as I think many of us saw him going as high as 30 but were pretty sure that Geelong were going to nab him at the very least with one of their last picks. In saying that he was a bit of a bolter late but he did interview with at least 6 clubs so not sure what went wrong. He is a no nonsense key position defender who presents in the Nick Maxwell style of third up defender. Courageous as you can get and would be very coachable. Skills good and would be someone that would be in the mix to play in 2011.

22 Melbourne John Meesen / Melbourne

23 Richmond Luke McDonald / Eastern Ranges / 196 / 90kg

Gone with McDonald who is an over age player who dominated at FF this year for the Ranges and ended winning the goal kicking for the TAC. Tigers really need to develop someone like this. That never seems to be a reason for these blokes to go high and unfortunately I don’t think Luke will be any different. Got a massive set of hands on him and takes a contested grab but I worry a bit about his pace and agility when he comes up against the bigger mature bodies. Still has a wonderful boot on him and his conversion rate is high. Worthy of the Tigers taking a punt and adding to a list of taller youngsters.

24 Fremantle Kyle Hardingham / East Fremantle / 187 / 88

Been on the radar for a while and is training with the Dockers. 21yo who has been playing WAFL seniors and dominating for a while. I think he would be pretty much ready to go straight away. Plays third defender and is a genuine ball carrier. Got good skills and takes a nice mark.

25 North Melbourne George Long / Port Magpies / 178 / 80

I think he was pretty close to a senior spot and so probably shouldn’t have him this low. He was in the mix last year for a spot and backed up this year pretty well albeit had a few injuries. Is a medium defender who has a great turn of pace and neat foot skills. Makes good decisions and has a penetrating kick to which is probably AFL standard. Kid has a lot of x factor and I think he is probably a definite to go.

26 Sydney Cameron Kickett / Perth / 194 / 82

Played ruck at the champs for WA but like Donaldson is going to end up more like a KPD. I am a bit 50:50 on him. No doubt in what I have seen he has talent but he also looks a bit lazy. Whoever takes him will need to be convinced that he is going to get his work rate up. Certainly got the potential because he tested well at SS. All the skills are there – good mark and kick and has a little bit of x factor about him so worth a shot. If Sydney were looking for talls late Hutchison and Bevan would be others

27 West Coast Mitch Carter / South Fremantle / 183 / 76

Kid that went a bit under the radar outside of WA. Very clean player who is one touch and makes some really good decisions with ball in hand. More outside than in but does the one percent things. Good pace and good agility and a very penetrating kick. Typically plays HB but I think he could play wing, midfield or HF. He would be a handy prospect and someone that moves like an AFL player.

28 Port Adelaide K.Tenace – Geelong

Very left field but Tenace would give Port some genuine pace and leg speed for AAMI. If a kid would think maybe Rolfe or O’Hara. Amalfi would be an interesting choice as well.

29 Hawthorn Brent Wallace / Northern Knights / 178 / 67

C’mon Hawks….take the kid. S.O.T – Son of Terry. Was terrific as a junior and played U18s this year but has probably tapered a bit. I think he was in the mix for a father/son but obviously wasn’t taken. Club have said they will consider him but they only have two selections so we will see. Coach Pagan was a wrap for him so that should count for something. Anyway Hawks would want to be careful bc I think others would have a crack. Good kid who capt Carey I think . Reasonable height but is very skinny and maybe that’s the issue. Plays HB / midfield, good skills and seems to know where to run. Can win his own ball but a nice penetrating kick.

30 Essendon Serhat Temel / Calder Cannons / 194 / 89kg

I was a little surprised he didn’t go but was getting told he was going to be a rookie if anything in the last few days. Would be amazed if this kid isn’t given a crack – his late season form would have had him a certain Metro player. Big fwd who is probably best suited to FF but could go CHF if he improved his speed off the mark and endurance. Was tried down back this year with the Cannons and had no impact and was then transitioned fwd where he took off. Got better and better as season progressed and finished with a really good finals series and GF. Massive set of hands and a really good contested grab. Kicking is a feature and could be a player of real promise. The knock for me on him is that he didn’t play on a lot of big bodies at TAC this year and I wonder how he will go against bigger bodies. Be interested in his 20m sprint #s because they may tell the tale of whether a club takes him or not.

31 Carlton Josh Giddings / Glenelg / 190cm / 75kg

Represented SA at the champs and sticks out as he is only a whippet of a kid but has a bit of potential there. Plays as a CHF / HF type and has good pace and a big leap with a strong set of hands. Finishes his work well in front of goals. The only thing I would say about Josh is am not sure how well he goes when the ball isn’t in his hands.

32 Brisbane Myles Sewell / North Ballarat

33 Adelaide David Mirra / Eastern Ranges / 185 / 82

Mirra is one of my roughies and he is a kid who could easily be left in the system for another year – think Eastern would definitely take him as an over age if he missed out. Hasn’t played a great deal of footy but has certainly shown enough AFL attributes to be in the mix. Club like Crows could stick him in the SANFL where his style of play will suit. Plays as a running defender wing who can run and carry. Will feature high in the handball receives and his disposal efficiency is pretty good. Played for Metro at Champs but was pretty quiet. One to develop though.

34 Collingwood Derek Wanganeen / Port / 172cm / 63kg or KRIS PENDLEBURY

Wanted to get Temel to here but he wont last til 34 IMO. Derek is small and light (but I thought he was closer to 70kg) and hence you wonder how he is going to get drafted but let me tell you this kid has something. Seen a bit of him and typically plays back or wing but his decision making and work through traffic is first class. Big ball winner and uses the ball really well both by hand and foot. One of the things I like about him is that he always seems to attack the corridor – lets hope AFL footy doesnt knock that out of him. Backs that with what appears to be a good fitness base and constant pressure around his man and as such tends to get good tackle numbers. Could be one of the finds of the draft. Think there is a big chance Kris Pendlebury may get picked up but after years of thinking Rose and Meyer might have been I have gone cold on sticking my neck out.

35 Bulldogs Taite Silverlock / West Adel / 180 / 80

Really wanted to find a place for this fella. Played some senior SANFL footy I think and handled himself pretty well. Played mid in juniors but will go as a small fwd in the Robbie Gray mould insomuch as he has a solid build so would be good 1:1 and could rotate through the middle. Wont leave anything on the field this fella. Jacob Thompson is similar in style so he could go as well.

36 St Kilda Jarrod Allmond / Eagles / 182cm / 70kg[/b]

19yo who is a bit of a smoky. Suspect he wont go but had a terrific year where he debuted at league level and made a big impression in his first few games, tapered off through middle of season but came good again in last third of the season. Big possession winner and a classic SA midfielder who oozes class. I have seen vision of him twice and was really impressed. He ended up winning the award for best young talent in the SANFL and with his booming left foot will be an interesting prospect come rookie draft day.

37 Geelong Matt Scott / Eastern Ranges / 185 / 72

Another I was a bit surprised didn’t go. I had him out but was one of the ones I was most worried about insomuch as I thought I had pegged him wrong. Went to DC so he has some admirers and certainly his testing didn’t seem to be an issue. I think the draft just got thrown out a bit this year and he got left behind. Reads the play well and is a good inside type player who keeps his feet and has good awareness. Skills are very good but its his ability to be really clean with the footy that stands out. He is light though and is going to need some feeding….

38 Richmond Graham Polak

39 Sydney Tom Hill / Northern Knights / 199cm / 82kg

One of the blokes who was touted as an 08 selection who obviously didn’t get taken and may have slipped a little this year. Obviously a big kid and he gets around the ground pretty well...........when he isn’t injured! And thats the knock on him, will clubs be convinced that he can stand the rigours of pre-season training and stay injury free. If he can he is a terrific prospect. Great size and good motor and still plenty of scope to fill out physically. Both his hand and foot skills are good and could play a variety of roles but most likely its a CHF where his pace and quick movement will get him into uncontested positions. I think he is even a chance to ruck at senior level and if he could add that to his bow he becomes a really exciting prospect.

40 West Coast Chris Luff / Peel Thunder / 193 / 82

Wonderful Full Back option from the West who I really wanted to slot in earlier than this. Played for WA at champs and had a great time of it. Been good at the local level as well and impressed as a cool collected type bloke who always makes good choices. This bloke just reminds me of a young Scarlett. Was made to play this role and plays the role really well. Composed, makes good decisions, skilful as well as an attackling flair when required. Probably used it more by hand than foot when I saw him but always seemed to release players into space.

41 Port Adelaide Michael Florio / Perth / 190 / 75

All the physical and athletic attributes to get a rookie spot. Haven’t seen a heap of vision of him so maybe way off the mark but what I have seen suggests he moves pretty well and has a penetrating kick. In fact I think he has got some genuine AFL attributes. Reminded me a little of our boy Blight so looks suited to a wing or HBF. Like Blight he also seems to be pretty good overhead and wont dodge a contest. Really well balanced.

42 Hawthorn (Michael Johnston / NSW)

43 Essendon Gavin Roberts / Norwood / 190 / 72

Must admit I had kept this kid ‘quiet’ as I didn’t think he was on anyones radar and he was a chance for my last selection in the Phantom but given Weedon fell I went with him. Roberts is a Scotty Pendlebury ‘clone’. Raking left footer who makes the game look pretty easy because of the amount of time he has available to himself. Plays through the middle and is good around the clearances. Can win his own ball as well but you typically want him making the decision around where to give it off to. Beautiful left foot and its penetrating as well. He is pretty light so will need some time to get “AFL ready” but if you are willing to try and develop a Pendlebury type then a late selection on this kid is the go!

44 Carlton Michael Coad / Sturt / 192 / 88

Rumoured to have been in the mix last year with the Hawks being pretty keen. Key position defender who has had a good year at SANFL level from all reports. Solid lad who reads the play very well and gets into contested situations. Nice skills but he is just your solid defender. Tried to get to hawks last year but in a total stuff up the papers didn’t get lodged. Apparently the Blues are into him this year as well so he may turn up here……or he may get to the Hawks ……finally.

45 Brisbane Dylan Grimes / Northern Knights / 192 / 81kg

Was always one that was definitely going to be on the cusp of selection in the ND. Frankly any kid from 30 onwards was not a certainty. Dylan is the younger brother of Jack who will probably end up more as a defender. Has good athletic credentials though and hence there is a chance he could move more into the midfield group. Goes well in the 1:1 contests and is probably one that could become pretty adaptable in terms of the types he could play on. Another player who I liken to a Goldsack insomuch as you think he could probably play a tall key defensive post but probably more likely to become a 3rd tall defender who can play on a variety of types. Good pace so also a player who defences could run out through in time.

46 Adelaide Daniel Scott-Collings / Glenelg

Kid hasn’t been on the radar much but from what I can gather tested pretty well at the state screening. Plays wing and has lightning pace and is a good penetrating kick. I think he could be a bit of a roughie that goes late. Skills are good but probably not elite from what I have seen. Can win his own ball though so they are all attributes that clubs look for.

47 Collingwood Shae McNamara / USA (Brendan Fewster)

Google him. We will see how he goes but am a bit 50:50. Our club seems to hate drafting developing rucks. Prefer bloody soccer players / grid iron players etc over kids that have been trying their guts out…….sorry my latest soap box issue! One developing ruck from an alternate backgrounds enough but now two??? Kid Fewster from Cannons a perfect example of someone I would rather. Beaut mover, very agile, great skills – watch the TAC final……..Anyway good luck to Shae.

48 Bulldogs Robbie Hicks / Calder Cannons / 176cm / 68kg

I would be calling Robbie Hicks here. I must say I have some doubts but you have to hand it to this kid. He came into the Metro squad late and ended up playing all 5 games which is a good achievement as a small crumbing fwd. Had 20 shots on goal for the carnival but he only converted 9 of them to goals – the rest behinds. I suspect if he had kick 12 or 13 then his name would be more prominent. In saying that he got a DC invite and I suspect clubs looking at quality, pacy, creative small fwds are keen on him. The one area I would like to see Hicks improve is his efforts at the contest. Has all the x factor and skills but in some of the games I have seen the intensity could be just a tad higher. Should be easy for him as he tested really well at the repeat sprints so he can certainly get to a lot of contests and chase and harass from an endurance perspective. Hope he goes though as he is good to watch.

49 St Kilda Tom MacKenzie / Geelong / 191 / 85

The forgotten Falcon in some ways. Everyone talking about Dare but surely this kid was hard done by. Super defender who went to DC and tested really well particularly at the sprints. Can play on talls and shorts. Keeps his feet which is crucial for defenders and tends to make good decisions on the way out. Kids that are over 6ft, can run and deliver the pill are worth having a crack at.

50 Geelong Tom Harms / Sturt / 185 / 78

Bit of a smoky in some ways insomuch as heard very little about him. In other ways not so much. A few clubs must rate him (and think I read Crows were definitely one in an interview somewhere) because he was a DC invite and tested reasonably well from memory. Played most of the year in the U18s but did play some reserves games and went ok. Plays wing / HF and has good pace and goal sense. Nicely balanced, good overhead, with neat skills (kicking a real feature) and knows how to kick a goal.

51 Richmond Todd Grayson / Gold Coast / 185 / 81

Versatile type who does all things well. Would think he will settle either mid or HBF. Seen him a few times and shows a fair bit of ticker and hits opponents pretty hard. Skills good and will be someone to keep an eye on. Be a good chance to go to the Lions as he has played in the 2's this year.

52 Sydney Mitch Golby / Gippsland / 183 / 81

Hard running mid from Gippy who has pace and good execution – particularly his left foot which is pretty penetrating. Typically plays HB but I think he would make a natural wingman. In some ways has a similar style to Wellingham.

53 West Coast Mitch Brown / Peel / 190 / 87
Havent seen a heap of him but is a tall fwd with Peel who has a terrific leap and is very competitive in the air. Allows him to play a little taller than the listed height. Probably more a third tall but will be a very difficult match up as he moves well and is excellent at ground level with his sure hands. Kicking is good and certainly one that displays some AFL attributes.

54 Port Adelaide Levi Casboult / Dandenong Stingrays / 198 / 103

Overage kid who was on the cusp of being recruited last year. I guess you could say this was a weak draft and therefore the overage kids were at an advantage but you can only play well and this kid did that plus some. Big boy whose body would be ready for an AFL senior game who is very mobile (tested super well at SS) and can play ruck and fwd. He is not dissimilar to Lade in that way and he would be well worth a punt at this stage of the rookie. He also has a very accurate kick…again like Lade. People will say how much development is left but look these tall kids need time and he will learn how to position himself better and make use of his physicality.

55 Essendon Brendan Fewster / Calder / 198 / 95

Was really surprised this kid didn’t get more plaudits leading up to the ND. He must have been on the cusp. I have only seen him 3 times including the TAC GF where I thought he was really impressive. Not sure of his testing results but seemed to get around the ground really well for a ruckmen and has really really good skills for a big fella. Can almost play as another ruck rover because he gets himself into positions where he can be a link player. Well worth a shot and a year or two to develop.

56 Carlton Zac Fitzgerald / Eagles / 190 / 85

Played mostly school footy this year so am going on limited vision here but some of the folk in SA have him rated pretty high. Good contested mark who has a lot of development left in him. Skills are very good and has a bit of x factor about him.

57 Brisbane Kieran King or Mitch Fisher / Geelong / 182 / 83

Had it my mind that King was going back to athletics so if so I think Fisher could be one that Voss really rates. Most plays small defender but can run in the middle where he has done well. Physically ready to play VFL next year and will be interesting to watch as he is a pretty good kick, hits a contest pretty hard and wont leave anything out there.

58 Adelaide Aidan Riley / NSW

Have seen a heap of this kid and he is very talented. Crows do NSW very well.

59 Bulldogs Patrick McMahon / Oakleigh / 203 / 80

A few rucks in the draft that are all pretty similar so this is a very speculative pick. Nice size though at 203cm and that sets him apart. Only seen him once and some limited vision but he gets around the ground well and seems to have good endurance. Apparently had a good beep test so that’s very handy. Backs that up with the ability to take and mark and execute well.

60 St Kilda Tom Walsh (Ireland)

61 Geelong Guy Okeefe / Western Bulldogs or James Podsially

Be a great story if James gets taken after such a wonderful VFL career.

62 Richmond Jarryd Cachia / Northern Knights / 184 / 84

Kid I am really hoping to see go. Beaut kid who presents really well. Smart footballer who can play inside and out and uses the ball pretty well. I think he was one of the better clearance players in the TAC and whenever I have seen him its always to advantage. Went to SS and tested really well so there is much to like. I think he is ‘Hine’ type atually in the mould of Francis last year so wouldn’t be surprised if he landed at Lexus.

63 Sydney D.McNeil / Murray Bushrangers / 178cm / 75kg

64 Port Adelaide Daniel Bass

65 Essendon Luke Thompson / Geelong Falcons / 192cm / 85kg

Was a chance of going last year as a 17yo and I was a bit surprised he didn’t. Like a lot of those kids they haven’t backed up so well this year and dominated as expected. Not sure clubs will read to much into that and at # 83 Thompson is a real good get for the Lions. Athletic tall that shapes as someone who could play a variety of spots. Will probably make a defender in the Bock mould. Good good pace and a fair engine so will probably play as a bloke who will aim to run off his opponent. Skills are solid and handles the ball very cleanly. Ideally he would be a cm or two earlier and although haven’t seen any testing on him I think he will play a little taller than his 192cm anyway.

66 Carlton Andrew Hooper / North Ballarat / 172cm / 78kg

Every year there is a bloke like Hooper. Dean Kelly ghosts for me were revisted when Hooper didn’t go. If Jaryd Blair can be rookied then this bloke should be a moral certainty. Everything he does on a footy field says he is a chance to be very successful at senior level. Very very hard at the pill, wins a heap of contested footy, runs hard all day and has really neat finishing skills with a reasonably penetrating kick. One of the things that makes him distinctive is his sprints though. He is incredibly quick off the mark and would therefore present as a terrific Back pocket / roving type to man the elite smalls running around for many teams at the moment. I really believe this guy is in the Sam Mitchell mould and a club would do well to give him a go.

67 Brisbane Niall McKeever / Ireland

68 Western Bulldogs Patrick Rose / Williamstown

69 St Kilda Jack Weston/ Gippy Power / 189 / 88

Jacky boy is an interesting one. He was a real chance for the Pies this time last year and Burgan had him late to the Pies this year. I wasn’t convinced and have had him around the 100 mark the whole way through. Interesting type because I have seen him play nearly every role bar ruck. Goes fwd and back and can play in and out. Whilst that all sounds good and he is pretty quick I havent really seen him influence games heavily and they are the types I look for late. He would be a good chance rookie though.

70 Richmond Jamie OReilly / Ireland

71 Sydney Swans Sam Crichton / NSW Zone

72 Port Adelaide Jordan Johns / NSW

73 Carlton Zac Tuohy / Ireland

74 Sydney Mitch Taylor / NT / 188 / 84

Defender type who is aggressive and can play any role in the back half because his agility and leap are exceptional. Quick off the mark and is the type of player you would definitely rookie and develop him. I think he could even play higher up the ground once his body fills out. Bit of a wrap for this kid.

75 Brisbane Matt Fowler (Bio above)

76 Brisbane Broc MacCauley (Bio above)

77 Brisbane Claye Beams (Bio above)

Others who were a bit rough to miss;

Shane Page / Bendigo / 183 / 82
Capt of the Country side who had a reasonable champs before getting injured. I think he also played some VFL footy where he acquitted himself well with a BOG and a best. Courageous type who will probably settle on a HBF or wing, has good skills and tends to make good decisions. He is one that could miss all together but that would be a shame.

Jarryd Amalfi / Dandenong / 188 / 80

I think he is an AFL type – nice height and plays HBF where he is used to run / carry and then setup. Has really nice skills and its got good penetration as well. Would be in the mix late – not so much for his results but just because he has good potential.

Scott Taylor / NT / 181cm / 74kg

Gosh I love this little fella and would love to see him go. Nuggety midfield type who deserves to go higher after a sensational champs. Was an absolute ball magnet who can win the footy himself or equally receive and carry. Just tough and never seems to give up......sounds like Scott West huh? Well its gets better because Taylor has got good kick penetration on him. Would have been very happy to see him at Pie land. Again, one who I think could play pretty quickly. Just a really smart footballer. Knock on him is going to be how much development clubs think he has left. Little like J.McVeigh for mine.

A.Stopp / Norwood / 192 / 87

I thought Alex was going to go last year and was a bit surprised. Felt a bit vindicated this year because had a terrific year playing SANFL seniors. Just your stock standard KPD who does all the little things well but probably just doesn’t have one standout feature. I think the Saints might look at him .

Declan Bevan / QLD / 196cm / 90kg

Not a 100% sure this guy will go because he has been a bit disappointing after having a really promising junior career. But he is one of the blokes that has shown me he has a few tricks and is one of the few quality taller blokes left. Has played a variety of positions including ruck as well as key fwd and more recently defensive posts. Not sure where he will settle but will be first tried as a fwd I would think where he could be pretty formidable for opposition defences. If he fails there he could be a defensive type and as a result offers some flexibility this late. Gets off the mark pretty well and has a strong set of hands on him. Kicking skills are also pretty good so shapes as someone who could make an impact. I think the issue for Bevan is does he get enough of the ball. A bit of speculative choice but could a be a real find in the rookie draft.

D.Archer / Tas / 195 / 91

Seen him a couple of times and whilst he didn’t influence the game much he did enough to show that in an AFL system with some good development coaches he could be something good. Pretty good at the SS on the repeat sprints which surprised me because I wouldn’t have picked it. Takes a nice contested mark and is a good kick. I think the knock is he aint that agile and is no real x factor. He would be very 50:50 to go. Maybe Bevan or Hutchison would be more highly rated.

Simon Potts / North Adel / 190 / 76

Just not sure I have seen what others have in Simon. Many would have him in I suspect so again lets assume that he is therefore more likely to make it. Certainly the potential for him to develop physically is there and he already holds his feet pretty well and executes nicely so you would think he is every chance. Just not one I have seen enough of to be convinced.

J.McNamara / WCE

Been some talk the Coasters will take McNamara back so that could be a spot along with the Pies who have repoertedly shown interest. I just think he is a bit one paced and his execution a bit average. Not sure if that’s been injury related so maybe a bit tough on him. To me he is an outstanding WAFL player. Chance at the Pies or GC.

Mitch Golby / Gippsland / 183 / 81

A lot of his type so it was just a few others that I had ahead of him. In saying that I get only about 30-50% of the rookies usually so that’s probably a good omen for this bloke. Hard running mid from Gippy who has pace and good execution – particularly his left foot which is pretty penetrating. Typically plays HB but I think he would make a natural wingman. In some ways has a similar style to Wellingham.

H.Busher / WA / 193cm / 85kg[/B]

CHB for the WA side who really caught my eye at the champs. Many have Luff ahead of him but I am not so sure. Really aggressive type player who seems to like hurting KPFs. Hits the pack hard and tends to recover well. Good tackler and uses the ball pretty well. Havent followed that closely since but would be interested in WA folks thoughts.

Cheynee Hutchison / QLD / 193 / 89

Kid is a bloody man already. Just huge and I wonder if he will go fairly early in the rookie or not at all. Some clubs might take him on the basis that he will only get smarter and use his physical attributes more wisely, whereas others may think he hasn’t got much development left. Takes a great contested grab, moves well and has a beautiful kick. Seen him a couple of times and he stood out.

Luke Thompson / Geelong Falcons / 192cm / 85kg

Jacob Thompson / Calder Cannons

Nuggety little fella from the Cannons who is a bit of a Medhurst type. Stands around 180cm and built like a little tank. 1:1 he is going to be difficult to match up and his competitive spirit will make even harder. Think a few clubs are interested so he is a chance for sure. Cats might be the go.

John Rayner / Western Jets / 184 / 68

Another who was in the mix last year. Former runner who has devoted himself to footy. Obviously tested well at SS so could be one that gets looked at. I think there are some question marks over his foot skills but they are good enough for him to be a run with type player. His athletic credentials will stand him in good stead if he can play a good close checking role.

Tom Hunter / Calder / 186 / 76

Courageous midfielder from the Premiership winning Cannons and very much a Voss style player I think. Loads of their players taken this year and Tom would have to be in the mix. Inside midfielder who can play a range of spots but will probably end up as a HB or mid. Needs to fill out a bit but when he does his opponent will know he has been in a contest.

Cameron Milne / Tasmania / 199 / 97

Over age player who was very good at the champs this year. Had a couple of very solid game where he was very physical in the ruck contest and used his hands really well to feed the Tassie midfielders. Bit more your old fashioned type ruck who is adept at sitting behind the play and diffusing the opposition fwd thrusts. Tested very well at state screening so should put him ahead of a few other rucks in the mix.

Ben Howlett / Peel / 184 / 82 or Sam Power
]
One of these spots will be for Sam Power but not sure which one.
Howlett is a WA mid who is mature age. Seen a bit of vision of him and I was really impressed. Pays midfield and can win his own ball. He can run fwd for a goal as well. Had a terrific year in an ordinary side and would surely have attracted some attention. I had him in the mix for the National Draft late so would be reasonably confident he might get a go. Shaun Hildebrandt would be another from the WAFL who is a chance or even Matty Wright maybe from SANFL. Lions are sure to take a couple of mature agers aren’t they?

S.Power / North

Reportedly Lions very keen on Sam as a running link player.

Zac Ledin / Geelong Falcons / 181cm / 78kg

Over age player who went around again for the Falcons after injury last year meant we didn’t see his best. Well 09 was a different story. Absolutely dominated at times for the Falcons and racked up some pretty impressive disposal stats through the year. I actually think Zach might go a bit higher than this and wouldn’t be at all surprised if his name was called at 30 or later. Plays through the midfield where he is a good height and has terrific running stamina. Plays inside and out but I like him as a bit more of an outside player where he can use his skills. In saying that he can win his own ball. He would be one that could be ready to go a bit sooner. Another I would love to see in black and white.

Simon White / Subiaco / 192 / 89

Some chance to go to WCE would have thought. Athletic tall who has terrific pace for a big fella and will probably settle as a FB or CHB. 21 yo so some chance to play pretty quickly.

Todd Grayson / Gold Coast / 185 / 81

Versatile type who does all things well. Would think he will settle either mid or HBF. Seen him a few times and shows a fair bit of ticker and hits opponents pretty hard. Skills good and will be someone to keep an eye on. Be a good chance to go to the Lions as he has played in the 2's this year.

Ryan Neates / Claremont / 170 / 65

Tiny little speedster who is always going to struggle getting onto an AFL list because of his height unfortunately. However he does have exceptional pace and neat skills. Decision making is good as well so is worth a late rookie spot and seeing how he goes at a higher level. Won the Claremont B&F and was also handy late in the season for them. Was terrific to watch in the champs and really hopes he gets a shot. Blair acquitted himself well at VFL this year and was on the cusp of getting on the main list so that should be seen as encouragement.

Peter Rolfe / Sturt & NT / 183 / 86

Struggled here with either Rolfe or Rayner. I worry about Rayner’s foot skills to be honest although he is the better athlete. Rolfe is a 20yo and has been in the system for a little while. Was a chance of going in ’07 and was in the mix again last year. In a weaker draft he should go but it should be acknowledged he has had a terrific year for Sturt. He plays a lot like Kade Simpson and is probably a little more solid and better overhead. Has a raking left foot and can push forward for a goal. Suspect his best position is wing and he would be someone the GC might have their eyes on.

Alex Kite / Adelaide

Been training with Carlton and wouldn’t surprise to see him taken. Was very talented at U18 level and just hast been able to do it with the Crows.

Andrew Strijk / West Perth / 183 / 84

Ready made back pocket for an AFL club. Reminds of Broughton. Composed and runs the lines. Nice penetrating kick and goes well overhead to boot. Handy pick up for someone.

Would love it if WC picked Bennell in the PSD:thumbsu:
looks really promising and as Worsfold has stated, we're looking to draft fast, flashy forward crumbers, which almost perfectly describes bennell:D

didnt see myles sewell and he definatly deserves a spot somewhere.

i also believe richmond will select grimes instead of panos who seems to be impressing the guys down at punt road when i went down there today to have a look at our new recruits.

josh free, son of tony free should also be given a shot very late in the rookie draft

Interested Snoops in your rationale behind the GC picks.

Yes they will take some mature agers and so Iles is likely given how well he's playing, as is Skipper (or some other ruckman) given you don't want to be playing young kids in the ruck against hardened bodies in the VFL, but Luke Ablett? surely he offers nothing that GC really needs.

49 Geelong Tom Harms / Sturt / 185 / 78

Bit of a smoky in some ways insomuch as heard very little about him. In other ways not so much. A few clubs must rate him (and think I read Crows were definitely one in an interview somewhere) because he was a DC invite and tested reasonably well from memory. Played most of the year in the U18s but did play some reserves games and went ok. Plays wing / HF and has good pace and goal sense. Nicely balanced, good overhead, with neat skills (kicking a real feature) and knows how to kick a goal.

59 Geelong Guy Okeefe / Western Bulldogs

I think we would be thrilled if we could Dare as he looks all class and could well in time be the ideal Milburn replacement. However the reality is while he might get past the GC's picks due to their preference for mature agers, in all likelihoood he won't get past picks 6-20. We'd be thrilled if he did though.

I also expect both Guy and Dan OKeefe to be in the mix for our last rookie pick, unless Weadon, who has been impressing, is re rookied.

However expect us to definitely take a KPF unless we rookie Pods (mature aged) so one of Scott or Harms we won't take so we can take that KPF instead.

That is a great effort Snoop, some really good left field selections. It is good to see that someone else rates Tom Harms, he has been linked to Geelong from what I have heard.

Only issue for mine is no pacy small forward for Brisbane, but still great effort.

Am wondering whether to do one myself, but the effort required congratulations.
