Trent Cotchin as off-field mentor helped too. I believe the players said he helped them have the proper mindset in finals and the GF.

Not a coincidence that they never gave up and ground teams down to win like we did in our flags years. In previous years Lions took the lead and choked it most of the time.

I'm sure he has an impact, but they were a kick away from a flag while Cotchin was still technically on Richmond's list. Suspect the turnaround pre-dated the move by some time.

Melbourne essentially being turned into a dump has helped.

It seems like every other person I know wishes they had the money and other life flexibility to move to Queensland.
The CBD itself is a bit shit, the rest of Melbourne is generally pretty good, especially if you have money.

Besides, the players have the money to live wherever they want in Melbourne. If you play for Collingwood, say, you'll live in Collingwood or East Melbourne and walk to training. You're not going to have the life of someone who lives in Bayswater and drives 90 minutes one way.

Worked a lot with Rayner

Interesting stuff re: culture

The Zorko / Petty situation would seem to be relevant. Behind the scenes, making him face the music as captain and then step down at season’s end.
Some accountability, and not treating him as a protected species?

Zorko stepped down due to injuries making him scarcely available. He talked about after the premiership. It wasn’t really his choice and he wanted to lead the group to the premiership. Fagan said don’t worry if we win you’ll be right up there with us to lift the cup and followed through with his word. Zorks said it was a little embarrassing since time passed and he didn’t think Fagan was being serious.

Fagan can't be underestimated
The playing group seem to love him
More I think about it the better his flag is.

Most coaches come in and have a cult like following then maybe fizzle out or have to get a new group of players in.

He had just been there abouts every year and been slow and steady. Like a tortoise overtaking the hare.

Brilliant effort. Must really have the players on side.
