I guess it may come down to matchups on some weeks. E.g Drum for height advantage in the forward line. Thornton an extra utility. Macca or Johnson for a bit of toughness.

HF: Headland Tarrant Foster
FF: Farmer Pavlich Soloman

Palmer to play in WAFL.
Need another interchange....

Seems like a good mix of experience and new guys. I really didn't want to leave Gilmore out of the team, but given the super training from Crowley and Schammer I couldn't fit him in. Think Foster and Palmer will be fighting over the same spot, and at the moment Foster should have first shot. I also think Pavlich should stay closer to goal, allowing Tarrant to lead up the ground and get the ball to him.

I don't know how Schammer will go being the only person on the field, though I wouldn't be surprised to see him win the GF.

I'm shocked that some people have Palmer inside the centre square. He'll have to play really well in the NAB Cup to get selected round one, and even then he won't start the game as a ruck rover but at half forward or on the bench.

I'll be surprised if Thornton plays round one.

I've just watched the last derby - great game. i'm basing my team on that a little bit.

No room for Murphy , M Carr, Mark Johnson, Kepler, Shawnymac, Gilmore if you want to play Palmer, which I do.
Crowley to pip Schammer for the Brownlow!

McPharlin being used as a backman against certain opposition. He'll be our swing man. On-ball stints from a majority of the team including Solomon, Pavlich, Farmer, Bell, Headland etc.

Keplar to put pressure on Sandilands/Warnock as a ruckman/forward.

Murphy/Campbell/Drum may be considered if the backline is failing without McPharlin. Also puts pressure on Headland if he's being used purely as a forward, particularly if McPharlin stays back. Need that 3rd tall to be effective.

Schammer/Foster/McManus/M.Carr to put pressure on midfielders. Good to have lots of pressure in this area. Can really see Palmer dislodging one of the aforementioned by the end of the season. Hence my inclusion of him in the 22. Don't think he'll start round 1.

I honestly believe Mark Johnson will be a pinch hitter in the midfield or as a backman. The guy adds grunt around the pack which we distinctly lack. Much like when Solomon was thrust into the centre square for short stints under the reign of Harvey.

Cant see Black and Hayden going into the midfield this year, the drive we get from these two in the backline cant be replaced.

Mark Johnson won't be keeping our young asset Schammer out of 22 and Kepler won't put pressure on anyone. If anyone is going to trouble the ruckmen, it will be Gilmore and even that is doubtful.

Is there something I'm missing with Thornton? Most people have him in their 18 but he isn't a reliable stopper and doesn't have the class of Johnson, Mundy and Black as a rebounding halfback. He's somewhere between 24 and 30 in my batting order.

As an aside, i'm am really excited about our youngsters recently drafted. Palmer (obviously) but i think we have a couple of real surprise packets in Mayne and Hinkley. Really excited to see them progress!:D

I think he's a better stopper than those three, so a good defensive option as 3rd backman. Therefore possibly worth a spot on the bench / backline , depending on matchups. Black's not really a defender is he?, more a defensive receiver in the midfield. I can't really recall him shutting down a forward.
Hopefully Johnson improves his man on man work, and becomes a defensive and offensive defender!!

Michael Johnson is a bloody good defender. He is not suited to stopping the power forwards. But he'll completely dominate a resting ruckman/3rd tall no problem at all. He is actually excellent at contested footy. Below his knee's he's inventive and clever. Long straight leading forwards are not his forte, but he's definately not poor in 1 on 1s.

Another thing, I don't think Hayden is a good small defender. His rebound is superb. But his ability to shutdown a small forward is lacking. Someone like Mark Johnson, Marcus Drum or Brock O'Brien have a chance to cement themselves in the 22 should they be able to blanket these smaller types.
