Laughable. We are all appalled by their actions but no one is going to be given a life ban for that. Lose the captaincy, suspended for a couple of tests and he will lose millions in sponsorship deals, as well as the humiliation he will face. That is well and truly enough.

He shamed the whole country and our cricket team. No amount of money can repair that. I couldn't care less if he lost his sponsorship deals. He should have thought about that before he ball tampered. Disgraceful act and should be rubbed out indefinitely. We need to set a strong precedent and show future players the standards that are required, what we will accept and what we won't accept. As for Lehmann, well, if he knew about this then he shouldn't be allowed to be involved in cricket ever again.

I love the people who are coming out and saying " he owned up to it so that's a positive "
They only owned up coz the got ******* caught
And to think they haven't been doing this before now is pretty naive
Maybe, but pretty unlikely they have done it before, fair chance the cameras would have picked it up. Also, it was pretty obvious by the way they went about they were totally inept in hiding it, had no idea what they were doing and how to get away with it.

Should have given a life ban to Faf for ball tampering in 2016 , then you reckon? Did not even get suspended. Stop over reacting, there is no way he will get suspended for more than a couple of tests, let alone a life ban. But should definitely lose the captaincy and Lehmann should be given the arse as coach.

Heraldsun is saying Smith and Warner are looking at 1 year bans. Sounds fair. By then we would have found some good replacements. I don't think they should play test match cricket again, as we need to build a good culture and credibility in the cricket world. They might do a watto and become a 'gun for hire in the t20 circuit.

Fair?

Shane Warne got a 1 year ban for taking a diuretic. Not sure why Smith/Warner deserve the same when drug use has invariably carried far harsher penalties than ball-tampering (yes Warner's record is pretty awful, but so was Warne's).

By all means ban them for a match* and strip them of leadership roles (and fine them up the wazoo, even though losing sponsorship deals would effectively do that anyway). For ball-tampering that is quite an unprecedented punishment as it is.

*Only the lack of clarity surrounding Warner's exact role has stopped me from advocating that he be banned previously.

Yep. This is just the straw that broke the camel's back.

I think some of the behavioral issues started under Steve Waugh's captaincy. On field banter made way for "mental disintegration". We were so good at cricket it didn't matter though. You don't hear much from Steve these days though.

.

Did the team manager Buchanan play a part in all this?
like when he would play unnecessary psychological games with the opposition . Like leaking an insulting dossier about the opposition to the media..
just to taunt the opposition. I remember this happening during an Ashes series when England were already 3-0 down or something..
Seems like they enjoyed kicking people while they were down.

I had read that was just Buchanan being careless.

Then again, that was from Steve Waugh, so...

As disgraceful as this is let's see how the investigation pans out. Wouldn't surprise me at all if this 'leadership group' meeting where the team all blatantly decided to cheat in the most ******edly bound to fail and bound to get caught way didn't really happen like that. Would not surprise me if for example it was Warner who put Bancroft up to this and Smith being the captain has decided to take the fall for it.
This is basically what is being suggested here.

Are they just making it up so everyone gets all outraged when it’s only 3-4 tests or 6 months or whatever it might be?

If it’s 12 months it’s 12 months. There may not be much love lost either from CA towards Smith and Warner in particular after the whole pay dispute last year.

Now there's an interesting point. If you take on city hall you'd better not get any parking tickets so to speak.

The whole pay dispute came to mind today and I’m surprised no one else has mentioned it.

It adds another layer of intrigue and I think furthers the likelihood of longer harsher penalties than what some think.

If it does happen Warner will probably feel all persecuted by CA as well. If so he can bugger off and play in some dodgy T20 comps from now on.

That’s very small fry compared to this

And producing Ball tampering memorabilia

Stock strictly limited to 10 000, order yours now."

Throwing your team members under ths bus? Should have owned it, said I did it, resigned and said he'll cop rhe ICC and CA punishment and hope he becomes a better person from it.

Atherton said it best, he simply had no awareness of the gravity of the situation when he went into that press conference.

Can we stop acting like Steven is some sort of innocent schoolboy who couldn't possibly have come up with something so dastardly?

Well he hasn’t murdered anyone and the umpires found the ball fine to use after investigation so the tampering was null and void.

Yes,he will cop a penalty but let’s not throw him under a bus, this will make other countries supporters look more like fools when the Australian cricket team visits them, when they throw their vitriol at our team.

Ball tampering has been going on for years by most cricketing nations, even Tendulkar has been accused.

But there was no sensationalism surrounding those incidents like the Australian incident.

Smith,Warner and Boof will cop their punishment and be labelled cheats for the rest of their lives while players from other countries who ball tampered will still be smelling of roses.

Amir went to bloody jail for years, still came back. Stokes assaulted a bloke, came back within a year or something. Blokes have done drugs, they have come back. You can't ban Smith forever for bloody tampering with the ball.

People get second chances in life, unless they have murdered someone. Contrary to popular belief, the Aussies haven't done that here.

Calling for life bans is a massive overreaction.

Never having DW in leadership group again might be wise, but that's not a matter of banning or not, that's just a matter of surely there are better options.

Yes people get second chances in life; sometimes even third and fourth chances. How many you get depends on what you do to earn them. Ball is in the players' court.

Suspend him, and let him come back as a player, not captain. I don't think he has enough credits in the trust bank for that.

Kudos for coming out and admitting it.

Deserves the opportunity to earn a second chance, if that makes sense.

Bit hard for him to come out and deny it when its been caught on camera.

I don't think I've ever disliked an Australian sportsman more than I do with Smith right now. His response during the press conference was the most piss weak and petulant thing I've ever seen.

What really rubbed me up the wrong way was that he made Bancroft answer the first question of the press conference. Bloody weak as piss if you ask me.

This has nothing to do with political correctness, and political correctness is a far to easy cop out to excuse poor behaviour because people think you are being ‘too soft’.

The premeditated nature of the offence was blatant and illegal. It was calculated and deliberate and for that there is no reprise. Involving other players and tarnishing their reputations is even lower, he used Bancroft as a pawn in this and for as stupid as Bancroft is, he is an impressionable out of touch cricketer looking to follow the leader.

There is no way Smith can captain this country again, and no way Warner can either. It falls to Paine or Marsh now. Sean Marsh.

He will get punished and should be, he would of known at least in a don’t ask don’t tell kind of way. That on its own is enough for a significant ban.

From what I can gather I’d do the following (and I’ve changed my tune on it a bit to the harsher end of the scale):

Bancroft - banned until end of next summer from all first class/t20 cricket

Smith - banned until after ashes and World Cup 2019. Extends to big bash and IPL (if possible)

Warner - banned for life from first class/big bash competitions in Australia

Lehmann - banned from coaching in Australia for life
