So there are quiet a few calls to bring it back, and here is an idea on how to have a successful SoO. This is designed to give states bragging rights and do get a world cup style ranking to see which state is the best, 2nd best (ect) and worst in Australia.

Give every state a rank before the SoO starts, and are divided into 3 divisions. Going up/down inside ur division is relatively easy, but its much harder to climb up/down an entire div -
Div 1
Victoria - 1
W.A - 2

Div 2
S.A - 3
Tas - 4

Div 3
NSW/ACT - 5
QL- 6

In addition hold a mini draft over 1 day where every state gets to select one player per round who would be classified as NT or overseas. Of course they can pass if they dont want to take anyone. The team ranked #6 gets to pick first and then proceed like a normal draft.

WEEK ONE -
In the first week there are 3 matches, 1v2 | 3v4 | and 5v6

From there, the losing team drops down and the winning team goes up a rank (where possible).

So say 1, 4 and 5 win (Vic, Tas and NSW) the new ranking would be

Vic #1
WA #2

Tas #3
SA #4

NSW #5
QL #6

WEEK TWO -
From there, the 2nd week would be NSW v SA (as NSW earnt the right to have a shot of climbing up a div, and as SA lost to Tas there in danger of dropping down to div 3 and rank 5). (Saturday night) - IN S.A

Tas V WA for the #2 Rank (Friday night) - IN W.A

And Vic V Queensland, any result will see Vic keeps its number 1 ranking however a win for Queensland will see them rise to #5 if NSW lose (as it is a mighty effort to beat the #1 ranked team).

I think it would be very well supported if the best players were played, which would be the main challeng.

Every year each state gets two games to try and increase their ranking and get bragging rights on the rest.

A big question is where to have this... i think the best option would be in the middle of the season. Have a 4 week break around where the current bye/split round is with SoO to be played on the first two weeks, not only to extend the footy season (which we all love) but also to give the players a much needed break to freshen up. Will also reduces the clubs (and players) worrying about injuries as there is a 2 week break afterwards to get over it. Perhaps clubs and players could be given some decent $$ for playing, the players get a percentage of the gate takings and the extra TV rights money, while another percentage goes to the clubs based on how many of their players are playing in the SoO to compensate them.

For those interested heres a link http://www.sportal.com.au/afl-news-display/sportal-afl-state-of-origin-128921 to a rough guide on what the teams would look like, obviously not what it would look like in 2013.

Any more suggestions? would u get behind a bigger and better SoO? discuss

Seems little point having NT in when they would largely be non competitive and bring terrible crowds

If one off SoO's are acceptable, I think SA and Vic should face off to open the Redeveloped Adelaide Oval in 2014.

WA and Vic can play at the opening of the Perth Stadium in 2018/2134?

not a fan of the origin concept but wondering if the following might appeal - based on the barbarians concept used in international rugby

year 1 - vic state of origin versus barbarians (team comprising non victorian born players) - played in melbourne

year 2 - south australian state of origin versus barbarians (team comprising non south aust born players) - played in adelaide

year 3 - west australian state of origin versus barbarians (team comprising non west aust born players) - played in perth

repeat cycle - could even introduce tas, nsw and qld as player pool strengthens or alternately establish a 2nd tier barbarians concept

pros - every player regardless of birthplace (including overseas players) get a chance to play

cons - i hate state of origin :D

VIC Metro
VIC Country
SA
WA

That's the only way I can see it working. Victoria must be split up. Maybe combine NSW/NT/TAS/QLD/NT somehow to make a couple of teams to play each other.

SOO can be held - provided it is in March before the season.

It is then done in carnival format - so for 3 weeks, the states play each other for the national championships.

Each player selected, receives a cash bonus of $20000 should they play. If selected and do not play, they are suspended for the first week of the season.

If they play and well, they are up for selection in the All-Australian team. That team takes on Ireland at the end of each year (home or away).

Victoria, WA, SA and a combined Tas/QLD/NSW/NT team would see 4 relatively even (if you averaged it over the next 10 years) teams play off.

QLD/NSW/NT/TASMANIA would actually be able to put a pretty competitive team on the field.

I am sure someone has the time to go through AFL lists to pick out 30 of the best Tas/QLD/NSW/NT players for comparison.

An all stars game is more interesting.

And the only way that will get up is if they cut the season to 17 rounds like they should.

the problem with State of Origin football is Victoria would smash any of the other states by over 100 points now.

State of Origin only worked in the 80s because the games were close.
