Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

We can argue about semantics, but you can't tell me that the VFL was professional when some players were working Saturday morning and catching a tram to play Saturday afternoon. If an elite sportsman had to work because of financial necessity, then I don't consider the sport professional. This was still the case in the 80s. The demands on an AFL footballer these days are far far greater than they were 25 years ago. Then there's the formation of the AFL Commission, tv rights, etc

You cannot compare AFL today to the VFL of the 1980s. I could perhaps understand a KPP playing because of team injuries, say a 3rd or 4th ruckman, a full forward in form in the reserves, but a 172cm tyke? The Bulldogs are desperate and it's an odd selection, especially given that it hasn't been done for over a quarter of a century.

Re: Players making debuts in finals

Actually, the VFL has been a professional sport, at large, for about 90 years. It is true that Hawthorn was essentially an amateur club until the middle 1950s (witness its shocking success rate of 21.55 percent or less than four wins a season to the end of 1953), that St. Kilda could not pay its players enough to be tangible until the same period, and that Melbourne preferred finding jobs to paying players. However, if you look at clubs like Carlton and Richmond, who acquired generous wealthy patrons and were willing and able to pay players for more than the Coulter Law allowed, it is impossible to conclude that the top VFL clubs were not professional eighty years ago.

professional or smi professional?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Andrew Hooper becomes the Bulldogs' first finals debutant on Saturday. All of the traditional VFL clubs are now represented on the list:

Ron, can you trim this list of 32 to just those that
a) debuted in a final
b) goaled in their debut

2010 Finals - Week 2 – Trivia

1 ) 3rd time this year Geelong has lost only 1 quarter of a match by 1 pt.

2 ) Geelong has doubled Fremantle's score in 23% (6/26) of their matches against each other.

3 ) WB/Footscray v Sydney/SM: Only the 7th match ever played where the scores were even at 1/4 and 3/4 time.

4 ) Sydney/SM is the first team to score 5 goals 0 behinds in the 2nd quarter and then 0 goals 5 behinds in the 3rd.

Interesting to note that Collingwood is the club who have to go back furthest to claim their most recent premiership, bearing in mind Fitzroy's plight. I couldn't be bothered waiting two extra weeks to see whether they take this year's big one.

Here's an article by Hugh Buggy written in 1952 for those interested in the history of payments to players and "professionalism".
It’s a very interesting article to note that only 11 percent of the money in football was paid to players in those days. It is true that in the rigorously professional American leagues there have been many player disputes (always resolved in favour of team owners) that have become so bad as to cancel half of a couple of seasons, but I would doubt if players received as little as 11 percent of the money in such leagues.

What I see as the key issue is this: most of the clubs, historically based among Melbourne’s working classes, possessed no inherent opposition to a fully professional league, the three historically “middle class” clubs of Hawthorn, Melbourne and St. Kilda were vigorously opposed to it. The culture of the affluent suburbs Hawthorn and St. Kilda represented was in general strongly opposed to any form of professionalism and wished the VFL to remain strictly amateur long after payments to players were authorised. Melbourne was controlled by the MCC, which was a bastion of amateurism in cricket and football, and preferred finding jobs to directly playing players in this period.
Full Points Footy said:
Unfortunately, Melbourne failed to build on its success, contesting the finals just twice over the next decade and a half, and bowing out at the first hurdle on both occasions. Football during this period was becoming more and more overtly professional, with payment to players, which had been going on “under the lap”, so to speak, for many years, finally being accorded official sanction by the VFL in 1911. Melbourne, which after all was controlled by that bastion of amateurism, the MCC, was strongly opposed to the payment of players, as was University. Indeed, it would be many years yet before a player took to the field in the colours of the Melbourne Football Club in return for tangible remuneration. Adherence to the “amateur ideal” was also a principle reason for Melbourne’s withdrawal from the VFL competition for the duration of the First World War.
Dealing with the conservative, noncompetitive culture of south-of-Yarra Melbourne was very difficult for the VFL in those days. The VFL knew, I imagine, that if it did what Hugh Buggy suggested, Hawthorn and St. Kilda would with their limited supporter base and no significant local patrons have folded very quickly. It could not accept that it was uneconomic full stop to have a club in the eastern suburbs because there was general hostility to competitive sport - exactly like how forty years later the AFL could not accept the lack of demand pre-Super League for Australian Rules in New South Wales and Queensland. The VFL was thus in a delicate balance which it obviously could not resolve to the satisfaction of everybody both inside and outside the League.

Buggy is right that without zoning and the Coulter Law many players would have changed clubs. The classic case is Col Austen, who wished to play for Carlton as a boy and played for their reserves, but was zoned to Hawthorn and forced to play for that club. There can be no doubt, though, that had Austen been able to play for Carlton - who with generous local patrons and a large support base could (and did) pay players far more than the legal £3 per match - he would have played far more than the 135 games he actually played and the Blues would very likely have won more than their two premierships during this period. Hawthorn could pay its players virtually nothing and consequently Austen spent four years in the war. Carlton and Richmond - then the two richest clubs in the League - could pay their players enough to stop them from enlisting in the military as virtually no other club could. The result was that they lost no more than one or two senior-list players and none of their stars to the military, whereas impoverished Hawthorn and MCC-controlled Melbourne lost many of their very best players.

Both Graham Moss and Barry Cable won seven Best & Fairest awards in a row across two states;

Moss

Essendon: 1974-75-76
Claremont: 1977-78-79-80

(Surprisingly, he didn't win Essendon's Best & Fairest in his first VFL year in 1973, even though he polled 25 Brownlow Medal votes, two shy of Keith Greig's winning tally of 27.)

Cable

Perth: 1965-66-67-68-69
North Melbourne: 1970
Perth: 1971

Longest suspension for a rugby player 16 years or under....

Sydney: On August 9, 1982, 16 year old Jason Harris was suspended for 14 years for headbutting an umpire during a match between Blacktown High and Evans High in Blacktown. He was banned until the first day of October in 1996.

By contrast, the VFL is lenient. Phil Carman copped 16 weeks for headbutting an umpire two years back, and an extra 4 for striking. Back in the old days, striking 'd get you life.

In the VFA, a Northcote player called Jack Perkins was suspended for 25 years in the 1930s, but was able to play with St. Kilda because of the lack of a permit agreement with he VFL.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

There was an interesting stat mentioned on radio earlier this year that since winning their last premiership in 1980, Richmond have played in as many finals as Fitzroy, who of course perished in 1996. Both teams since 1980 have played 8 finals for 3 wins and 5 losses. It is interesting to go a bit further and see how both teams performed in all games between 1981 and 1996.

After finishing as runner up in 1982, Richmond had played 46 matches over 1981 and 1982 for 32 wins and 14 losses. Fitzroy also had played 46 matches for 27 wins, 18 losses and 1 draw. This, naturally, gave Richmond a better winning percentage. After a wonderful 1983 season, Fitzroy's winning percentage overtook that of Richmond's, and managed to stay ahead until the end of 1994. By this stage the Lions now had played 314 games for 137 wins, 176 losses and 1 draw, for a winning percentage of 43.789. Richmond had played 308 games for 118 wins and 190 losses for a winning percentage of 38.311.

Richmond's winning percentage for all games beyond 1980 first fell below 50% during 1986 and has stayed that way since, dropping as low as 37.062 at the end of 1993. Fitzroy's winning percentage for all games dropped below 50% during 1988, though at the end of 1989 it was 49.757. Their winning percentage since 1981 only dropped into the 30s during their final season of 1996.

Even after Richmond's great improvement and Fitzroy's woeful decline in 1995, the Roys still had a better winning percentage than Richmond, thus it was only after Fitzroy's disastrous 1996 season that Richmond finally took back the honour of the better winning percentage. At the end of 1996, Fitzroy had played 358 games between 1981 and 1996 for 140 wins, 217 losses and 1 draw, for a winning percentage of 39.245. Richmond had played 355 games for 145 wins, 209 losses and 1 draw for a winning percentage of 40.985.

By the end of 2001, taking into account Richmond's most recent finals appearance, their winning percentage since 1981 had improved to 43.482 from 468 games.

It is well-known to insiders that the AFL of the 1990s knew Richmond, with their long-established tradition of wealthy supporters dating back to the 1920s, would be much harder to dispose of from the competition than Fitzroy, though between 1983 and 1993 Richmond won only 74 of 240 games (success rate 30.83%) and Fitzroy won 105 of 245 games (success rate 42.86%). Inside Football issues from 1987 which I read a couple of months ago suggested that - although in 1990 Richmond had only 4,974 members and Fitzroy 6,025 according to the Gaumont Football Yearbook - that the AFL saw a successful Richmond as boosting crowds, which it was desperate to do to avoid the heavy losses of the middle 1980s.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Fitzroy's 1916 premiership came in a year when the club also won the wooden spoon.

Only four teams contested the premiership that year, and at the end of the home and away rounds all teams made the finals. Fitzroy finished last at the end of the home-and-away season but finished strongly in the finals to complete a stunning form reversal.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

^ Dude, that gets repeated a lot. I don't think there'd be many people left that didn't know about 1916.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Colin Sylvia kicked a goal with his first kick... in his second game. How many other players have gone one (or more) games without a kick and then got a goal with their first one?

The AFL Record Season Guide lists the following:
Fabian Deluca (PA) 2006 v Br - after two kickless games
Ben Moore (Ri) 1996 v St - goaled with his first two kicks
Mark Williams (Ha) 2002 v Me
Allan Murray (St) 2003 v Ha, although all the stats sites show him as having had one kick on debut

Curiously, Sylvia is not listed.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Collingwood has never played a match in its entire VFL/AFL history without at least one player who had past played in or went on to play in a grand final for the club.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Probably not obscure or random - but the last time Swan Districts (WAFL black & whites) won a Premiership (1990) Collingwoood also won. Hope it is not an omen!

And how many kicks has a player gone before one is not a goal? I remember Metropolis kicked four goals in his first 4 kicks to start his AFL career.
