An amazing parallel spoilt by Collingwood getting that last point or goal in the 1977 Grand Final:

As any person with knowledge of VFL/AFL history should know, these are the only matches since 1919 (in fact, since 1912) where both teams scored three or fewer goals. Although there were 31 such games from 1897 to 1911, it is to be expected that these three later occurrences attract much more attention when VFL/AFL history is written because scores were so much higher - an average of about 48 points from 1897 to 1911 versus 74 in 1927, 99 in 1977 and 94 (really more due to the weather) in 1989.

What is amazing is that the games of both pairs occurred in 1927 and 1989. North Melbourne in the drawn 1977 Grand Final did not goal in the second and third quarter. Had the Kangaroos got up late in the 1997 Grand Final, it would have been a double for the three years of 1927, 1977 and 1989, which logically is quite amazing.

I take it that these figures don't include a club's first game of the season when that game was other than round 1 because of a bye?

Correct.

If basing the numbers on the player's club's first game of the season, the changes are:

Excellent stuff. I wonder if anyone besides the few that come to this thread are aware of Podsiadly's record? Apparently he may not be quite right to play by round one this year and so have a chance to really consolidate it! :)

Upon looking up past Pies stats, I found an interesting one.

Albert Lauder who played from 1926-1931 only played 36 matches, winning 32 of them. However he somehow managed to score three premierships, averaging a premiership every 12 games...

Is that a record for a triple premiership player?

Some Melbourne parallels from last year.

When Dean Bailey was sacked last year, he was replaced by Todd Viney who had played 233 games for Melbourne which was also the coach killing score kicked by Geelong against Melbourne.

Melbourne's score of 47 equalled the time in years since Melbourne last won a flag.

In Todd Viney's 233 games, he kicked 92 goals.
Dean Bailey was delisted by Essendon in 1992.

Tom Scully played 31 games in the No. 31 guernsey.

Dean Bailey played 53 games for Essendon, 53 - 31 = 22.
Melbourne's Best and Fairest last year was No. 22 Brent Moloney.

Dean Bailey made his VFL/AFL debut in 1986.
Geelong killed Dean Bailey's Melbourne coaching career in a 186 pointer.

Going back to Todd Viney's career re 233 games and 92 goals, the difference between the two numbers is 141, Neil Craig (Mark Neeld's right hand man) first experienced a 100 point loss in Round 17 2004 when it was Adelaide vs Brisbane.

Brisbane won that game by 141 points.

Another parellel with Brent Moloney's No. 22.

Tom Scully, who wore No. 31 with Melbourne now takes the No. 9 guernsey at GWS and as we all know from prep and Grade one, 31 - 9 = 22.

Neil Craig's last game as Coach occurred in Round 18.

Adelaide's score was 3 6 24.

3 x 6 = 18.

Back to Brent Moloney that day, he was cursed from the moment he crossed the boundary.
