New Saturday.
New bunch of stats.

165-61.

A score not seen in a VFL/AFL senior game but it gave Adelaide its highest win over Carlton.

It's also the first time Adelaide have beaten Carlton by 100+ points.

Adelaide now have beaten the big 4 at least once by 100+ points.

139: Vs Richmond in 1993. (171-32.)
137: Vs Richmond in 1997. (185-48.)
110: Vs Collingwood in 2005. (151-41.)
138: Vs Essendon in 2006. (188-50.)
112: Vs Essendon in 2015. (171-59.)
104: Vs Carlton in 2018. (165-61.)

3rd consecutive season where a 100+ margin was realised in the final H/A round.

2 of the 3 seasons had 2 separate cases of 100+ games.

2018: 142-40 vs 165-61.
2016: 155-44 vs 164-51. (Sydney vs Richmond.)

142-40 and 155-44 were won by Geelong.
Both were on Saturday arvo's.
Both were the first AFL game scheduled that day.

2017 was the odd ONE out (135-20 as registered by Port Adelaide vs Gold Coast.)

That means that, for the 2nd consecutive season, Gold Coast have finished a season -100 in arrears of their opponent.

Of all of the above scores, only 164-51 has been seen more than once. (Coll vs Kang R14 1937.)

Also, like 2010, we saw a pairing of 98-95.

2010 it was Hawthorn defeating Collingwood.
2018, Richmond defeating Footscray.

In 2010, Collingwood finished that season on top of the ladder.
2018, Richmond did likewise.

North Melbourne are bidding to create a VFL/AFL first.

Should they beat St Kilda, we'll have 12 teams finish a season on at least 12 wins.

A VFL/AFL first.

In 2009, Adelaide kicked the highest score of the year (27.14.176 vs 16.8.104.)

This year, Adelaide kicked the highest score of the year (26.9.165 vs 8.13.61.)

Both were registered in the final round of the season (22 in 2009 and 23 in 2018.)

Both were against Carlton.

Both games were at the Dome.

2018: 13.6.84 into 20.8.128.

1/4 Time scores, couldn't be further apart.

2018: 5.4.34 vs 1.4.10.

2 more similarities between those 2 seasons.

In 2008, a final round Saturday twilight game involved Adelaide playing Footscray.
It was best known for Nick Gill's speccie.
It also featured a pairing of 76-67.

In 2018, a final round Saturday night game involved Fremantle playing Collingwood.

I really like the reference to Docklands as 'The Dome'....it'll always be the Telstra Dome to me...Marvel stadium my eye!!

BUt i'm an old man who perhaps qualifies as shaking my fists at clouds sometimes. Same as Kardinia Park for me.

Loving these stats by yourself and Red and Black.

As was brought up last week, Geelong now i think has 38 wins by 100 points. Being born in 1968, but not really following Geelong until my first home game in 1977, Geelong had a win against the Swans in 1976 by 104 points, and the first one i saw was in 1981, the consecutive wins by 100 and 114 points against St.Kilda and North respectively.

Which i think makes all bar about five of Geelong's 100 point wins have happened in the last 37 years. Certainly Geelong does a smashing of sides as well as anyone.

Geelong not only win by 100, they completely strangle the opposition yes.

Good get there.

Also, more similarities between R22 2008 and R23 2018.

Both rounds had St Kilda to close out the round/H/A season.
Melbourne played the 2nd last game.
Geelong played a home game at Skilled on a Saturday arvo (99 point win in '08 and 102 points in '18.)
Fremantle played Collingwood and both games were in WA.
Both times the largest margin of the round was in excess of 100 points (108 in '08 and 104 in '18.)

Jarrad Waite's career has a nice parallel.

Last H/A game of 2003: Jarrad Waite plays in that game (Carl vs Kang.)
Last H/A game of 2018: Jarrad Waite plays in that game (Kang vs STK.) (Also his final game.)

Leading goal kicker (1920-), lowest goal average per game:

3.09 - Jarryd Roughead (2013)
3.11 - Bill Young (1956), John Peck (1965)
3.14 - Lance Franklin (2017)

Lowest goal tallies for a Coleman Medal winner (1955-):

Wooden Spoon teams in the major leagues for 2018:

AFL: Carlton Blues
VFL: Coburg Lions
TAC Cup: Bendigo Pioneers
SANFL: Adelaide Crows
WAFL: East Fremantle Sharks
NEAFL: Redland Bombers

The Adelaide Crows SANFL team's 1-17 record this year put the Crows' first wooden spoon into their trophy cabinet.

In the AFL the Adelaide Crows are the only team to have never been in danger of a wooden spoon. All other teams bar Port Adelaide have finished on the bottom of the ladder, but in 2011 Port only avoided the wooden spoon by percentage from newcomers the Gold Coast Suns. Even in the Crows' worst years they have never been anywhere near the bottom of the ladder.

Most teams to win 12+ H&A games in a 22-game season (1990-2018):

12 - 2018
9 - 2017, 2016, 2015, 2012, 2003, 1998, 1997, 1994
8 - 2014, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2004, 2001, 2000, 1992, 1991
7 - 2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002, 1999, 1996, 1990
6 - 1995

The struggles of Carlton and Brisbane 2015-2018. To R13, Carlton average almost 4 wins but only 1 in the last 10 rounds. Brisbane on the other hand only manage about 1.5 wins to R13 but finish off with almost 3 wins in the last 10 rounds. We have seen improvement from Brisbane in the latter half of 2018 but you would have to think Carlton still have a long way to go.

Highest combined score by one club in a finals series.

Played 5 matches

74.92.536 - North Melbourne 1977 (the only time a club has played 5 finals matches)

Played 4 matches

78.68.536 - Geelong 1989 (average of 134 points per match)
74.57.501 - Geelong 1992
70.65.485 - Richmond 1972
65.60.450 - Carlton 1982
67.48.450 - Essendon 1993
66.48.444 - Essendon 1983

Played 3 matches

68.50.458 - Essendon 2000 (average of 153 points per match)
60.51.411 - Geelong 2007
53.67.385 - Melbourne 1987
57.42.384 - Essendon 1984
55.46.376 - North Melbourne 1996
55.34.364 - Geelong 1995

Not hugely obscure but minor premier wins premiership only approx 35% of years since 2000 (6 from 17). Of those 6 occasions 4 were in the first 8 years and only 2 since. Last 9 years only happened twice.
Mathematically speaking, the original McIntyre final 8 system was the best for the minor premier, but it had some anomalies that the public could not accept and rightfully so.
1993-1999:
Minor premier winning the premiership: 3 of 7 (42.9%)
Minor premier making the grand final: 6 of 7 (85.7%)

2000-2017:
Minor premier winning the premiership: 6 of 18 (33.3%)
Minor premier making the grand final: 14 of 18 (77.8%)

I don't see any team outside the top 4 challenging this year, and if West Coast lose to Collingwood, we should be pretty confident of an all Victorian grand final.
