Is it just possible he could be a better find than those drafted above him in his year?
Seems to sum up situations brilliantly and reads the play exceptionally well. Last night although he didn't have that many possesions, how he used the ball was outstanding i thought.
Rarely makes mistakes and rarely misses near goals. Quality kid.

The smartest young player I have ever seen.

The one factor that seems to be overlooked in draft testing is players who have a "football brain", and both Beams and Sidebottom have that type of skill and awareness.

I was talking to a fellow pies fan last night about his TAC cup GF game, and we were both shocked he was still available when he was in the draft.

Some clubs made some errors not picking Steele, that's for sure.

Shane Crawford on the sunday footy show said he will win a brownlow in the next 3-4 years, he just may be right.

He has been fantastic, but I think that draft will go down as the best ever when we can look back in a few years time. Hill, Naita, Rich, Hurley, Ziebell and Yarran were all taken ahead of Steele and are all quality players. Steele and Beams may have overtaken a few of these players, a very good draft for Collingwood so far!

Spot on Matty some teams don't look at Footy Brains and more look at Athletic Abilty and that where most Drafting Mistakes Happen

0 clangers, 88% efficiency, 5 goals. The boy will be a star.

plenty of so called 'footballers' dont make it because they're just not athletic enough, not tall enough etc.
It's a fine line.
for every 'footballer' that makes it like steele there are blokes like mcgough etc that dont.
steele is a gem though, has a bit of didak in him

Steele is way Better then McGough

I'm probably still a Beams man (not that you have to choose) , but he is a very nice footballer.
It was a pretty strong draft early , I wouldn't say he is ahead of most of the blokes he was drafted before at the moment , maybe 2 or 3.

Really? I always thought there was a touch of Bartel about him. Not fast, but had the football smarts to get to the right places and the high end skills to finish. I hope he develops the inside skills that Bartel has and reaches the same heights - premierships, brownlows, etc.

Steele's pace or lack there of is a bit of a myth, have seen him burn off players this year and from all reports is around mid pack for collingwod sprints.

He may not be Judd like explosive but he is no slouch either, just look at the game vs the roos when he needs to put the after burners on he does and he can make distance on players many consider "quick".

Have also watched him chase down players who are meant to be quicker then him.

People still going off his DC result which if you watch on footage he looks to be just going through his paces, you can also improve on speed with the right training.

Steele seems to have a pretty damn quick 10 metres. Twice when he picked up the ball at the knee level he pushed out of the chasing pack easily to make himself space.

His best will come when his body is stronger and he plays centre square constantly. Right now no need.

Exhibit A: Steele Sidebottom the reason you should pick footballers over "athletes"
Works both ways, exhibit a for the athletes naitanui

Steele if he was just a super plod old style footballer he wouldn't make it, his endurance and ability to run at his full pace non stop is what makes him so very good.

Regardless very very happy with him and he will be a super player fir years

It's not like he is a poor athlete, he won our 3km time trial and was 2nd last pre-season when he was 17 and coming off no AFL base.

His Biggest Weakness was that he does not have great speed off the mark

that would have to be sustained pace surely, his first 10 looks pretty good, and he has a nice side step to give himself that space to release the ball properly. I mean Pendelbury, the man is no sprinter but always breaks out of the congestion

Steele is the closest player that I have ever seen to Diesel Williams (without the thuggery) that I have ever seen.

A real joy to watch. Brilliant football mind.

He (and Diesel) proves that quickness doesn't always have to equate to leg speed. He's never out of position, always where he needs to be at the right time and most of the time there before any other player has thought to be in that position.

I agree with Crawford. If the umpires still pay attention to that sort of a player rather than purely the flashy skilled top of the line players (Ablett, Gibbs, et al) then he absolutely will indeed win a Brownlow or two.

has a bit of didak in him

I agree entirely. I thought I was the only one who saw it though. When he ran in for a few of his goals last night I though I was watching a young Dids (who is also not lightning quick but moves so well that he plays quick).

He moves like Didak and he has a similar ball drop, etc. Very efficient mover.
He has incredible balance which means he can start moving forward without the need for a typical momentum build up like a normal player requires. This means he is quicker out of the blocks than other players and he somehow has "time" that other, quicker players can't create for themselves. You can tell by how straight he stands - awesome posture for a footballer. Just about the best I've seen.

Great to see him get the rewards for being in the right spot.

Excellent game, great finishing, and I like that he's confident enough to have a go for the sticks.

Can't think of a much more satisfying goal than Steele running into the goal and nailing it against Carlton last week. He got it, ran fifteen metres, smashed it through, it never looked like missing, and from that moment we were certain of the 4 points.

Many years of this to come.

(Loving on other forums the debate between Rich and Hill being better and ignoring our two)

Wow, these kind words are really appreciated, pretty much sums up my thoughts on Rusty :thumbsu:
