Any thoughts on Hill?
Is he injured, out of form or being played out of position?
After 150+ games he should be a reliable player and whats more a leader out on the field.
Had A grade potential but I just don't see him delivering that.
Seems to be falling into the Lyon category of 'undroppable non contributor' but he should be better than that.
Anybody else feeling this?

Yeah he’s been shocking. His draft year are performing admirably. Sidebottom, Ziebell, Beams, Hurley... all picked after him and in much better form.

He hasn’t been the same since he injured himself last season, looks to have lost all confidence and has really gone into his shell. I don’t like him being shifted around, leave him on a wing. Now that we have a wider home ground he really should be a lot more effective.

If he's injured then wrap him up in cotton wool for the rest of the year.

The most concerning thing from today was that he did not seem interested. Perhaps he was concerned about how the tomatoes were growing at home, like we all do from time to time, but professionals should be able to push that to the side and get on with it.

I miss that burst, steadies and then laces it to someone 40m out from goal.

Was one of our best kicks inside 50m. Now asked to sweep across half back and hit targets. Bit more pressure and he’s just not getting into it.

There was a few players with ball in hand today forward of center bombing long and I just wished it was Hill.

Our strong midfield can be a curse because then we switch players to areas they ain’t accustomed.

That all said he looks lame and disinterested. I hope the latter is because of the former.

I know this thread is literally called “Stephen Hill” but him and Neale have been disappointing this year.
I wish Neale was a bit more damaging with his possessions. I understand he’s an accumulator and links up the play but I wish he was a bit more damaging. Random thought, is it worth playing him forward more? If I remember last season he spent more time forward and kicked multiple goals on a few occasions. He has a good pair of hands and good on the lead.

Him and Walters swapping isn’t a terrible idea imo, although I prefer Walters stays Forward

Disagree, Neale started the year in bellow par form, but he's worked his way into the season quite well - bit like Fyfe only not as good obviously.

On SHill, though he's not what he can be, I reckon he's been better than people think (today aside of course). He's playing a more set role as a HBF and often quite deep at that. One could argue that it's not his thing (and I lean that way myself), but improving the skill level back there has been a priority and when its worked I think we've been pretty happy with it all even if his role becomes less obvious. The thing is we expect spectacular because, when in form and fit, we've had top shelf stuff from Hill and we miss it.

Part of the issue is that he has an ability to play injured, but no where near to a level that we should get from him. His style and skill set doesn't allow him to play well through it. It impacted him badly last year and might be the case this year too - though I've got nothing to really base that on yet.

I am disappointed in Hill. He has never reached his true potential. He should have been all Australian with his skills speed and decision making. However he has never really put together a full season and become one of the elite players in the competition.

I don't think it's fair to compare Hill to the likes of guys who get to win their own ball, while playing on ball. As much as I'd like him to be a stoppage, clearance mid I'm not sure he will get that chance/have that ability.

Hill has always looked best when the team is playing well and nobody looks good in defence when the ball is turned over up field and suddenly you have to chase arse back but your man has literally the entire defensive fifty to lead into.

He’s not tough enough IMO and struggles when he has a niggle. He can also lose confidence.

He’s a nice complimentary player in a good side that’s up and about but won’t stand up if the side is struggling. Langdon is a better player now and always has a crack.

I’d still keep him though as complimentary players are handy once the team is up and going.

I think it's his fitness. He just looks out of puff all the time. I'd prefer to see him off the half-back line and move Blakely into the midfield.

There haven't been too many shy superstars unfortunately so that ship has probably sailed but he hasn't had that fluid movement that helped him make space for himself for a while now for whatever reason

This thread wouldn't even exist if Gary Lyon hadn't been doing his normal thing in commentary of picking an individual or two criticise in a side getting beaten because it's easier than actual analysis of the process. Which is why he is a commentator and not a coach.

It is less than a month since Hill was one of the best on ground in our loss to the Giants ffs.

Hill played some of his best footy as an inside mid. Needs to go back there. it's unfortunate that he cant make it work off half back as he has all the qualities to be a star of the position. Evasive, speed, run and carry, elite kick..
