JB is naturally a big body and very powerful lower half.

He might'n care that much about heavy weights, due to injury, especially bench as it takes a lot out of your shoulders.

Cambell Brown looks like he could bench a small vehicle and he'd be mad enough to attempt it.
Seen JB in the weight room. He actually doesnt have big guns, he doesnt train heavy either, which is good in that it would impact on his mobility and create more pressure on his lower body which he most definitely doesnt need. He has natural strength, but is not what you would call overly muscled nor overly defined in the mould of a Cousins

Brent Staker benches more than Jonathon Brown sadly enough. Proves looks can be deceiving

Staker is a big unit.... very important to have that lower body strength. In AFL if your a midfielder you would focus on different things. Guys like Ablett, Selwood, Chapman, Bartel, Hodge etc.. would be mostly concerned about keeping their feet and shrugging tackles. A big body in the midfield up top could seriously hamper you, it has to be balanced with strong hips, abs, lower back, legs and glutes. For them its about the deadlift and the squat i would say. You just have to hold your feet.

Big defenders and forwards have more upper body strength because they are engaged in one on one contests more often, having good lower body strength is also important, but also having the ability to push your opponent away. Ie bench press, heavy weighted parallel dips etc... id also argue that the true one on one forwards are not so prevalent anymore. Guys like Lynch, tredrea, gehrig, hamill, etc... the only true big boys left are really hall, brown and fev. Most forwards are very rangy and athletic.

I think all in all its the power movements for football. Snatch, clean and jerk, dead lift, squat and bench. The raw weight lifting movements that incorporate big compound movements. Specific things. Isolated exercises are useless. Being able to bicep curl the most is irrelevant. Being able to dead lift or squat a lot is relevant.

Hard to say who is the strongest. It should be classed in a weight category and should be assessed with a power to weight ratio. gehrig did bench 172.5kg as did Mal Michael. For their weight, that is strong and specific for their position. Lynch could do 155kg and i know that trent croad could squat over 200kg.

True story this:

A friend of a mine named Ron, a saints man, regulerly went to a gym in Moorabin where a lot of saints players also trained(weight session). This is going back maybe 8-10 years ago. Now Ron is an unbelievably strong man, he can lift unbelievable amounts of weight, bench press, squats, dead lifts, you name it. He doesnt have much shape about him, he's just big and strong. To put it another way, I've seen him bench press such a heavy weight(in reps, not just 1 lift) that the bar litterally bends at either end.

Anyway, one day Gerigh was there, doing bench( a heavy weight as he was only doing 2-3 reps with each set), Ron walks up to him and asks if he could please 'warm up' with those weights. Frazer thought Ron was taking the piss out of him and said "sure", Ron procedes to do around 15 reps with the same weight that Frazer was just getting 2-3 reps out of and says thanks and walks away.

Ever since then, whenever Frazer saw Ron at this gym, he always said hello to him and they sort of became friends....true story.

I think I remember the comp. I reckon Channel 7 were planning to do a full hour-long 'special', but realised how incredibly boring it was and so we only got a couple of 5-minute 'fillers' in the News for a couple of days (or it might have been TT, or whatever the equivalent was back then - Mark Day? Derryn?).

Anyway, the comp lost a lot of cred when they announced 'From St Kilda - not Tony Lockett as you might think, but Danny Frawley!' Now Spud was probably a very strong guy, but there was no doubt the announcer's tone was 'Lockett couldn't be a#sed to do this, and we weren't going to pay any more'.

They only showed 4 players ('Semi Final Round!') and Dunstall won. I seem to remember a figure in the 140kgs being mentioned. Only Bench press - no deadlift or squat.

It was actually far more boring than it sounds. It looked like it was filmed in a crap local gym, and the only spectators were the players and the cameraman. Made Lou's Handball look like the Olympics.

You show me someone who reps 15 of 170 and i'll show u a pig that can fly...

Gehrig benching 175kg x 6.... No way!

If he could crank out one rep at that weight i'd be very surprised.

Real strength isn't just what you can bench.. Squatting and Dead lifting are more true signs of overall body strength.

Strength/Power lifting competitions involve Bench, Squat and Dead Lift. For key position players, upper body strength is more important than the smaller players.. but in terms of strength that's most usable in AFL, strength below the waist is far more important.

I can tell you that AFL players would spend far more time dead lifting and squatting than bench press/arm exercises. The pretty boys or ones more concerned about their looks are likely to hit the arms harder... it's usefulness is negligible.

Look at players such as Paul Chapman, Gary Ablett Jnr and Joel Selwood. Very, very thick through the core. Result? It usually takes 2 players to get them off of their feet. A big upper body won't assist in that. I think Chapman is pound for pound the strongest in the league... his stability is unbelievable, so is his thigh/glute size. The bad? Loss of speed. These 3 I've spoken of aren't the quickest... although Ablett/Judd(freaks) are 2 guys who are both incredibly strong on their feet and quick.

I think that also puts the argument forward for Barry Hall as well; I'm sure everyone has seen Barry with a heap of opposition players trying to drag him down (I seem to recall a wonderful bit of commentary, perhaps against the Hawks, comparing the sight of Barry being tackled by several opponents to a pack of lionesses trying to bring down a wildebeest).

Rules have changed a bit, but back when Barry was a Swan and you could get away with a bit more of a wrestle in a marking contest I have no idea how many times you'd see him in a wrestle with an opposition defender as the ball came in only to throw them to the ground with a twist of his hips at the last second and take a relatively easy mark.

As far as pound for pound I'd throw Craig Bolton's name into the hat any day; I'm not sure how trustworthy this source is (Misson is, just not sure about the fellow recounting it), but the below figures are for Craig Bolton from 2003. He's missed most of this season through injury, and not really sure how those things change with age, so no idea what he'd be at now (he's now 30 and is about 5 kg heavier). He weighs in at about the same amount as Chappy (he's just a few inches taller).

Over the years Craig has stood most of the monster forwards in the league and whilst he has always looked to be giving up a lot of size he's rarely been out-muscled if memory serves me well.

At 83kg, he can bench-press 150kg and squat 200kg

t was a hot summer day and I was in my workout room benching 1200 pounds. My abs were flexing and girls within a 10 mile radius were getting wet. Once I was done with my daily 32 hour workout I called one of the bitches I know, Jessice. She is really damn hot and looks like a supermodel. SO I got into my Lamborghini Gallardo and reved it up to 40,000 RPM (this is an Italian import with special engine system). I got onto the freeway near my house and threw it into 8th gear, I hit about 600 mph and I could hear the sonic boom as I broke the sound barrier. As I was flooring it on the freeway like a badass, Jessica called me and said she wanted me to **** her. So be it.

I came to a full stop from 700 mph in front of her house. These Ferrari’s have top notch brakes, you know. So she gets out of the house and walks up to my Bugatti and starts eyeballing my dick. I could tell she was staring at it because when I looked at her I noticed she was looking at my dick. Booya.

Flash forward 10 minutes later. My 30 inch dick is going inside of her VAGINA, hitting them walls. I’m holding her entire body up with my left pinky as I’m ****ing her and she has 30,000 orgasms. She looks me in the eyes and she says “harder.” V-TEC just kicked in, yo. I blow my load so hard she falls off my dick. There had to have been about two pints of cum everywhere. People say I cum like a pornstar, I wouldn’t disagree with them.

I throw her a towel so she can clean herself up then I do a triple backflip into my Maserati and drive home.

Wow, just WOW!

That is GOLD! did you see the guy on 20-1 last night who got hit by a car going at about 60 miles per hour?? Are you that guy??

To answer a previous question, most AFL strength and conditioning programs prescribe high bar half-squatting, not down to hip-crease-below-top-knee which is what defines a legal depth competition squat. Although every club is different - it comes down to who the S&C coaches are and their training and athletic background.

A 200kg squat is meaningless without context. Every inch of depth makes the lift harder.

AFAIK
Gehrig benched 170kg for a single.
David Neitz was in similar territory.
Barry Hall benched 155kg for a single this year at the bulldogs.
Dane Swan can bench over 140kg.

This isn't bad considering strength training isn't as integral to AFL training programs as other sports such as rugby.

FWIW the best raw drug-tested bench pressers in the country right now have a best bench around the 220-230kg mark (500lb). This translates roughly to 170kg for around 10 reps. All are around 125kg+ - much heavier than any AFL players.

Why brag about a girl that can take a 30 inch penis !!

That girl is loose........

And Ron would still kick your ass........w***er :D

I got the impression Josh Hunt could seriously squat and deadlift.
No, Hunt just stands in front of the mirror doing bicep curls 5 days a week. Nothing that actually contributes to strength as a footballer but they make him look buff.

I've heard Cyril Rioli benches 540 kilos which is more than three times the next best in the competition.
